Choose an e-reader by matching its screen, lighting, file workflow, and controls to what you read and where your books come from. Compact screens can be easier to carry and suit reflowable novels; larger screens show more of a PDF or illustrated page at once. Then check the exact model for warm-light adjustment, support for your files and their DRM, page-turn buttons, and the accessibility settings you need.
Start with what you read and how you get books
Before comparing models, identify your main reading material and book sources. A reader who mostly buys novels from one store has different requirements from someone who transfers EPUB files, borrows library books, or reads PDFs and comics. File extensions alone do not settle compatibility: the source, protection on the file, and transfer workflow matter too.
- Mostly novels: Prioritize a comfortable, portable screen and useful font and layout adjustments.
- PDFs, comics, or illustrated books: Give more weight to visible page area and the format’s layout. A larger screen can show more of a fixed page, though screen diagonal alone cannot guarantee a better experience.
- Existing digital library: Make a short list of the actual formats and where each book comes from. Check the model’s import method and whether it can open those files with their DRM.
- Library borrowing: Confirm that the borrowing service and transfer or reading workflow you use are available for the exact model and in your country.
Choose screen size for portability or page space
There is no universally best e-reader size. Smaller devices are easier to carry, while a larger display provides more room for page layouts that do not reflow. Kobo’s current US store categorizes devices as 6 inches and 7 inches or larger; its Sage product page specifies an 8-inch HD flush E Ink Carta 1200 display. Those are examples from Kobo’s lineup, not a complete survey of brands or markets. See Kobo’s e-reader comparison and the Kobo Sage product page for current details.
- For flowing-text novels: A compact screen may be a practical choice if portability and one-handed carrying matter most. Text can be resized and reflowed, depending on the book and device.
- For PDFs and fixed-layout material: Consider a larger display because more of the page can be visible. A screen that is still too small for the document may require zooming or scrolling.
Compare the diagonal with the page layouts you actually read rather than treating one size as a universal recommendation.

Check lighting separately from warm-light adjustment
An adjustable front light and warm or color-temperature control are distinct features. A model may let you change illumination brightness without offering a warmer color setting. If you read in dim rooms, verify that the exact model has an adjustable front light; if warm light is important to you, confirm that color-temperature adjustment is explicitly listed.
Kobo describes its Sage’s ComfortLight PRO as offering brightness and color-temperature control. Amazon’s Kindle help explains screen-light adjustment on compatible Kindle devices and notes that some can adjust it with hardware buttons. Availability varies by model; consult the current product specifications and Amazon’s Kindle screen-light instructions. These feature descriptions do not establish a health or sleep benefit for warm light.

Confirm that your books work, not just that the format is listed
Match the device to the books you own, borrow, or plan to buy. Kobo lists EPUB and EPUB3 as well as PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, CBR, and image formats for Kobo eReaders. Kobo also explains that EPUB or PDF books with an ACSM extension are DRM-protected. A listed extension does not guarantee that every file or protection scheme will work with every source or transfer method. Check Kobo’s supported-format guidance against your actual files.
For Kindle, avoid generalizing from a single format limitation to every import path. Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing format comparison says Print Replica books are not compatible with Kindle e-reader devices and lack text resizing and screen-reader compatibility. If a title is offered in Print Replica, that limitation matters both for device compatibility and accessibility. Check Amazon’s format comparison, then verify the current documentation for the specific Kindle and the files you intend to use.

Verify page-turn buttons on the precise model
Some readers prefer physical buttons to tapping a touchscreen. Buttons are model-specific, not a feature to infer from a brand or screen size. Kobo’s current comparison includes page-turn buttons as a device filter; use it to identify candidates, then verify the individual product listing at Kobo’s comparison page. If button placement or handedness matters, check the device’s orientation and controls in person or against an up-to-date listing; the available specifications do not establish a cross-brand ergonomic ranking.
Include accessibility in the device-and-book check
Check both the e-reader’s settings and the formats of the books you will read. Kobo documents adjustments for font size, margins, and line spacing on its accessibility page: Kobo accessibility. Amazon’s Print Replica documentation is a reminder that an ebook may open on a device yet still lack features such as text resizing or screen-reader compatibility.

If you rely on larger type, reflow, layout changes, or assistive technology, confirm that the exact device supports the needed feature and that the particular book format exposes it. A feature available in the reader cannot compensate for a fixed-layout file that does not support that adjustment.
