Choose an amplifier by checking your floorstanding speakers’ minimum impedance, sensitivity and recommended amplifier-power range, then match those figures to the amplifier’s per-channel output and your room, listening distance and desired volume. A speaker’s size or “floorstanding” label does not tell you how much power it needs.
Start with the speaker’s specification sheet
For a passive speaker, the key checks are electrical load, sensitivity and recommended amplifier power. Wharfedale’s speaker-matching guide summarizes these as three numbers to check; its examples also show why no single wattage suits every floorstander. Verify the exact figures in the manual or official specification for your model.
Confirm the speaker is passive
Passive speakers need an external amplifier. Active speakers have amplification built in, so they are not driven by a separate stereo amplifier in the same way. A powered subwoofer likewise has its own amplification.
Check minimum impedance, not just nominal impedance
Impedance, measured in ohms (Ω), describes the electrical load a speaker presents to an amplifier. Lower impedance generally requires the amplifier to supply more current. A speaker’s nominal impedance is a headline value; its impedance can dip lower at some frequencies, so look for the minimum impedance in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Compare that minimum with the amplifier’s stated load support in its manual. Wharfedale advises choosing an amplifier specified as stable into 4 ohms when a speaker’s minimum impedance is below about 4 ohms. The exact compatibility limit depends on the two products, so do not treat a speaker’s “8Ω compatible” label as a substitute for checking the amplifier’s documented limits.
Read sensitivity with its measurement conditions
Sensitivity indicates how much sound output a speaker produces for a stated electrical input and distance. Higher sensitivity generally means less amplifier power is needed for a given sound level. But compare figures only when they use the same convention: specifications may report decibels at 1 metre for either 1 watt or 2.83 volts.
Voltage and power are not interchangeable across all loads: 2.83 volts corresponds to 1 watt only into 8 ohms. Wharfedale says its product guide generally reports sensitivity at 2.83 V and 1 metre, while some heritage models use 2.0 V; it says those readings appear about 3 dB lower than readings for the same speaker at 2.83 V. Check the test condition before ranking speakers by their published sensitivity.

How many watts do you need?
Use the speaker maker’s recommended amplifier range as a starting point—not as a guarantee that any amplifier with a matching number will work in every room. Compare the amplifier’s continuous output per channel at the speaker’s load with that range, and consider sensitivity, listening distance, room size and the peak levels you want. A wattage label without its measurement conditions may not be directly comparable to another label.

These are manufacturer specifications from its Australia product guide in 2026, not universal recommendations for amplifier output:
| Floorstanding speaker | Sensitivity | Minimum impedance | Recommended amplifier power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond 12.3i | 89 dB | 5.0 Ω | 30–150 W |
| EVO 5.4 | 90 dB | 4.3 Ω | 30–200 W |
| Aura 4 | 89 dB | 3.1 Ω | 30–200 W |
| Elysian 4R | 92 dB | 3.2 Ω | 15–250 W |
Wharfedale’s guide says a 3 dB sensitivity difference halves the amplifier power needed for the same volume. It uses its 86 dB Crystal CR4.1 and 92 dB Elysian 4R as an example of a 6 dB gap corresponding to about four times the power requirement for the less-sensitive speaker. Treat this as an explanatory comparison, not a loudness guarantee for a particular room or listening setup.

Factor in room, distance and peaks
A larger room, a longer distance between speakers and listening seat, or a desire for higher peaks can call for more amplifier headroom. Yamaha’s professional sound-reinforcement tutorial explains power selection by working backward from target sound-pressure level, distance and speaker sensitivity. Those variables are useful to understand in home audio too, but a PA calculation is not a universal domestic-audio prescription.
Do not use PA power ratios as a hi-fi rule
Yamaha’s PA beginner guide suggests amplifier output around 0.8 to 1.25 times a speaker’s PGM rating. That is a professional-audio rule of thumb tied to Yamaha’s terminology and example, not a blanket recommendation for home floorstanding speakers. For a home system, use the speaker and amplifier makers’ specifications and the listening conditions you actually have.

A higher amplifier wattage rating does not, by itself, mean it will damage a speaker. Wharfedale attributes damage to excessive playback or distortion from a small amplifier; Klipsch likewise warns about overload and clipping. Follow the speaker maker’s guidance and avoid sustained playback at excessive levels. The rating alone does not tell you how loudly you will listen or whether the system is being overloaded.

Can you use a 4-ohm speaker with an 8-ohm amplifier?
Do not decide from those two labels alone. Find the speaker’s minimum impedance and the amplifier’s documented minimum supported load. If the speaker’s impedance falls below what the amplifier is designed to handle, the amplifier may be pushed beyond its stated operating limits. Check both manuals; for low-minimum-impedance speakers, choose an amplifier whose documentation explicitly supports that load.

For a passive stereo pair
A conventional left-and-right pair needs two amplifier channels. A two-channel integrated amplifier is a common option when you want a stereo system in one unit; choose it by the same load and output checks described above. Verify any required connections or functions—such as a phono input or digital inputs—in the exact model’s official specifications.
For home theater
Count the passive speaker channels you plan to run and check how the receiver’s power rating was measured. A receiver’s per-channel output can be lower when five or seven channels are active than when only two are driven. Klipsch recommends looking at a receiver’s rating with two channels driven across 20 Hz–20 kHz as a commonly relevant figure; compare the stated conditions rather than assuming every published receiver rating describes simultaneous multichannel output.

Do not choose by amplifier class alone
Class A, AB and D describe amplifier topologies; they are not shortcuts for judging compatibility or sound quality. Klipsch cautions that broad topology comparisons are generalizations and that capable hi-fi designs exist across amplifier types. Prioritize load support, appropriately specified output and the inputs you need.
Compare candidate amplifiers against your speakers
For each amplifier you are considering, check the official manual or specification sheet against the speaker’s official information:
- Load support: Does the amplifier explicitly support the speaker’s minimum impedance?
- Power: What is its continuous output per channel at the relevant impedance, and how does that compare with the speaker’s recommended range?
- Listening conditions: Will its output provide suitable headroom for your room, seat distance and desired peak level?
- Channels: Does it have enough channels for the passive speakers, and are the published output conditions relevant to the number of channels you will use?
- Features: Does it have the inputs and functions your sources require?
A search phrase such as “stereo integrated amplifier 4 ohm stable” can help narrow options, but it is only a filter. Confirm the candidate’s official load-support statement and output conditions before buying; a phrase in a listing does not establish compatibility with a particular speaker.
What to check before making a model-specific choice
There is no reliable single amplifier wattage or model recommendation without the speaker model, amplifier candidates, room, listening distance, preferred listening level and required features. Gather those details from the product manuals and your room setup first. If you need system-specific advice, the speaker maker or an authorized hi-fi dealer may be able to assess the combination; Wharfedale invites customers to contact its team or arrange a dealer demonstration.
