Choose an AI threat detection platform by matching its data coverage and response capabilities to your threat model, then testing its detections, false positives, integrations, oversight and operating costs with your own telemetry. “AI threat detection platform” is not one standardized product category: compare what each candidate actually monitors and can do, not its label or AI claims.

First, define what you need the platform to cover

Before comparing products, name the security domains and data sources you need monitored. Endpoint detection and response (EDR) focuses on endpoint activity. A security information and event management (SIEM) system collects and analyzes security events from multiple sources. Extended detection and response (XDR) brings detection and response across several security domains. These labels can overlap, so verify each product’s actual telemetry, detection functions and response actions instead of assuming a category guarantees coverage.

List the sources that matter to your environment, such as endpoints, identity systems, cloud services, network devices, email and business applications. For each source, identify the events you need, how quickly they must arrive, how long they must be retained and what action you expect the platform to support. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework’s detection function can help frame the need to identify cybersecurity events; NIST SP 800-37 Rev. 2 provides a broader risk-management process for selecting and monitoring controls. Neither is a product certification or proof that a particular platform fits your organization.

Compare platforms against your operating needs

Weight these areas according to your threat model, existing technology and security team capacity. Ask vendors to show the relevant workflows with your data, rather than relying on feature names or headline claims.

Area Questions to ask
Coverage and telemetry Which endpoint, identity, cloud, network, email and application sources can be ingested? Are the required events complete, normalized and timely?
Detection quality Which threats and techniques have been tested? What did the platform detect, miss or classify as benign? Does an alert include enough context to support a decision?
Noise and analyst effort How are related events grouped into cases? What false positives arise during ordinary IT administration and business activity? What investigation work remains for analysts?
Response Which containment or remediation actions are available? Which can run automatically, and which require analyst approval?
AI oversight Can staff inspect, audit and challenge AI-assisted recommendations? Are limitations, data handling and action logs documented?
Fit and operations Does the deployment fit your technology stack, skills, retention needs and regulatory constraints? Who will tune and operate it?
Total cost What will ingestion, storage, licenses, implementation, integrations, tuning and staffing cost at expected scale?

Judge detection evidence, not the word “AI”

Ask how a detection is produced: what signals it uses, what conditions trigger an alert, what context accompanies it, and how the system distinguishes malicious behavior from legitimate activity. Request examples of both detections and misses, including activity relevant to your own environment. A persuasive AI demonstration is not a substitute for evidence about detection quality or the work analysts must still do.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) offers voluntary guidance for governing, mapping, measuring and managing AI risks. Its Measure and Manage functions are useful prompts for asking how a vendor evaluates and monitors its AI features, documents limitations and handles human oversight. NIST’s current AI RMF resource notes that version 1.0 is under revision; the framework is guidance, not a scorecard that certifies a product. In its January 26, 2023 announcement, NIST Director Laurie E. Locascio said the framework can help organizations “jump-start or enhance their AI risk management approaches.”

For AI-assisted recommendations and automated actions, establish who remains accountable. Microsoft’s responsible AI application card for its security AI capabilities says humans remain responsible for critical decisions and actions in the documented Microsoft Sentinel context. Ask each vendor how recommendations are explained and logged, which actions require approval, and how operators can review or reverse an action.

Check independent evaluations within their limits

MITRE ATT&CK Evaluations can help structure a shortlist and a pilot, but they are an evaluation resource, not a platform ranking or a guarantee of results in your environment. MITRE’s evaluation dimensions include detection coverage, precision, speed and benign-activity false-positive testing. Compare the scenarios and configurations actually tested; a result from one setup does not establish a universal winner.

As of October 7, 2026, MITRE describes Enterprise 2025 as focused on cloud-based attacks and abuse of legitimate tools and processes. MITRE lists an Enterprise 2026 call for participation, not published results. When a vendor cites an evaluation, request the exact product version, configuration, licenses, integrations and services involved before applying the result to a current purchase.

Verify integrations and cost with your own data

A platform can only analyze the signals it receives. Ask how required sources are connected and whether ingestion includes the events and fields your detections depend on. Check normalization, delivery latency, retention and any extra costs associated with collecting or storing that data. Connector counts alone do not establish that your critical sources work completely or well.

Microsoft describes Sentinel as a cloud-native SIEM with AI-assisted investigation, ingestion and storage tiers, and integration with XDR capabilities. Its current product page states that Sentinel has more than 350 native connectors and supports no-code custom integrations. Those are vendor-stated product claims, not independent measures of detection effectiveness; verify the specific integrations and event coverage you need in a proof of value. Microsoft’s documentation describes pricing organized around analytics and data-lake tiers and ingested data volume, so estimate costs using your expected data and retention rather than treating a feature list as a total-cost estimate.

Build a cost model that includes more than the subscription. Account for data volume and storage, implementation, integration work, tuning, ongoing analyst time and any services needed to operate the platform. A platform that fits the budget only when staffing and deployment work are excluded may not fit the security operation you actually have.

Run a proof of value before committing

Use a representative sample of your telemetry and include both adversarial activity and normal business operations. Approved administration scripts, common IT tools and routine workflows matter: without benign activity, a pilot can show that a platform alerts on attacks without revealing whether it will overwhelm analysts in daily use.

  1. Set the scope. Choose the priority threats, data sources, retention requirements and response actions the evaluation must cover.
  2. Agree on the test conditions. Record the product version, configuration, licenses, integrations and vendor services used so results can be interpreted accurately.
  3. Run attack and benign scenarios. Use activity relevant to your organization, including legitimate tools and workflows that could resemble malicious behavior.
  4. Record outcomes. Track true detections and misses, time to alert, alert context, case grouping, analyst effort, false positives and response behavior.
  5. Review governance and operations. Confirm that recommendations and actions are logged, approval requirements are clear, and staff can review or reverse automated actions.
  6. Recheck the business case. Estimate ingestion and storage, licensing, implementation, tuning, integrations and the people required to run the platform at expected scale.

MITRE’s public evaluation methodology can inform which measures to record, including precision, speed and benign-activity false positives. Use your own scenarios to determine local fit; a public evaluation and a buyer-run proof of value answer different questions.

Make the decision against your priorities

Choose the candidate that demonstrates the coverage you need, produces actionable alerts with manageable noise, fits your response and oversight requirements, and can be operated within your budget and staffing capacity. If a vendor cannot demonstrate a critical integration or explain how an automated action is governed, treat that as an unresolved procurement risk rather than assuming the capability from the product label.
