Choose an AI game creation tool by starting with where you want to publish, then checking whether its workflow, project scope, export options, AI limits, and total cost fit that goal. “Publish” can mean hosting inside one platform, while export can mean building a project for other stores or devices; those are not interchangeable.

Start with the game and its destination

Write down the game you want to make, who will play it, and where it needs to run. A simple 2D game for Roblox, a web game, and a 3D game destined for consoles call for different creation workflows and publishing routes. Decide the destination before comparing AI features: a tool is not a practical fit if it cannot deliver the game to the intended audience.

  • Game type and scope: Confirm 2D, 2.5D, or 3D support, and whether the tool’s documented focus matches the project’s complexity.
  • Destination: Check the specific targets you need—web, desktop, mobile, console, or a platform’s own hosting.
  • Export control: Ask whether you can access and build the project for other platforms, or only publish it within the tool’s ecosystem.

Compare the creation workflows

AI-assisted creation is not one workflow. It can mean building visually and using AI for selected tasks, asking an assistant for help inside a general-purpose engine, connecting an external agent, or generating a platform-specific game from prompts.

GDevelop: visual editor with tiered AI and publishing allowances

GDevelop describes its editor and engine as open source under the MIT license. Its plan page lists 40 AI credits per month on Free, and 200, 1,000, and 3,000 credits per week on its listed paid tiers. Those allowances do not establish how many useful iterations or finished features you will get; check which actions consume credits before choosing a tier. The same page lists cloud-project limits of 3, 50, 100, and unlimited across Free, Silver, Gold, and Pro, respectively. See GDevelop’s current plan comparison.

  • Think You're Smart? Prove It! — Wit's End is a challenging trivia and brain-teasing board game where players battle wits in four mind-bending categories of smart trivia. Four uniquely designed categories engage your powers of deduction as well as your knowledge:
  • Teaser — Can you crack the riddle? — These fun and tricky rhyming riddles will have you scratching your head as you try to deduce the answer.
  • Odd-1-Out — Which one doesn’t belong? — You’ll be given four terms, but only three share something in common. Your job is to spot the odd-one-out.
  • Sequence — What’s the order? — Organize movies by release date, cities by distance, historical events by year, animals by size, and more in this logic-based challenge.
  • Wild Card — Antything Goes! — This unpredictable category throws surprises like Brain Trivia, Word Whiz, True or False, Memory Lane, and more! You never know what’s coming your way!

GDevelop lists publishing to gd.games across tiers, desktop and Google Play publishing with tier-specific daily limits, and iOS publishing allowances on Gold and Pro. It also lists manual export to any platform using development tools. Manual export is not the same as a one-click publishing allowance: confirm which development tools and build steps your target requires. GDevelop advertises savings of up to 40% with annual payment, but the plan prices were not stated on the reviewed page; verify the current price, eligibility terms, and actual total before subscribing.

Unity: a general-purpose engine with several AI routes

Unity offers an in-editor assistant as well as an AI gateway, MCP server, official plugin, and CLI. The AI tools require Unity 6.0 or later. Unity says its CLI, MCP server, and official plugin are free to use without concurrency limits; the in-editor assistant has separate access terms. Pro, Enterprise, and Industry customers receive assistant access through their paid plan, while Personal users can try it for 14 days before it converts to $10 per month. An external agent connected through the AI gateway uses that provider’s subscription rather than Unity credits. Check Unity’s current AI tool requirements and access terms.

Roblox Build: prompt-led creation for Roblox

Roblox Creator Hub describes Build as a mobile-first workflow: describe a game, playtest it, iterate through chat, and publish to Roblox. Its current documentation focuses on simpler 2D and 2.5D games. A game can be shared privately with up to 10 friends before publishing; the documentation also sets account and minimum-age conditions for playtesters. Build is a Roblox destination, not a general export route to other stores or engines. The documentation does not state a cost or usage-credit schedule, so check current product terms rather than assuming it is free. Read Roblox Creator Hub’s Build documentation.

Calculate the full cost, not just the engine price

Separate the cost of using the engine from the cost of its AI features and any services needed to build or publish the game. A low or free engine tier does not necessarily include every AI workflow, platform build, or usage allowance you need.

  • Engine plan: Identify the plan required for your team and destination, including any commercial eligibility conditions.
  • AI usage: Check whether access is included, credit-based, trial-based, or billed through an external provider. Confirm what consumes credits and whether unused credits carry over if the terms say so.
  • Publishing and build requirements: Look for daily caps, platform-specific plan requirements, or manual development tools needed for export.
  • Other services: Include any asset, cloud, external AI, or publishing costs that apply to your project. Do not count an external agent as included in the engine plan unless the terms say it is.

For example, a Unity Personal user considering the in-editor assistant should account for the 14-day trial and the listed $10 monthly conversion price, while a creator using an external agent through Unity’s gateway should check that provider’s subscription separately. A GDevelop user should compare credit frequency and publishing limits with the project’s expected iteration and release needs, then verify current plan pricing.

Check portability, rights, and terms before committing

Before investing time in a tool, confirm what happens to the project and its generated assets if you change workflows or publish commercially. “Publish” may describe hosting within a platform rather than portable source or a build for another store.

  • Can you access the project files and build for the platforms you need?
  • Are AI-generated assets subject to disclosure, usage, or ownership terms that affect your release?
  • What data is sent to the AI service, and which data-sharing controls are available?
  • Do the plan’s commercial eligibility, revenue, or team-size terms apply to you?

Review current official terms for the specific engine, AI features, and destination platform. The plan pages describe vendor offerings; they do not establish that one tool is faster or better for every creator. The reviewed sources do not provide an independent comparative performance benchmark.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Name the destination. Decide whether the game must reach Roblox, web, desktop, mobile, consoles, or more than one target.
  2. Match the scope. Check whether the tool’s supported game type and documented complexity fit your project.
  3. Choose the workflow you can use. Decide whether you want visual editing, an engine-side assistant, an external agent, or prompt-led platform creation.
  4. Verify export and publishing. Distinguish hosted publishing from manual export, and confirm the exact targets and required tools.
  5. Price the whole workflow. Add the engine plan, AI access or credits, external subscriptions, and any publishing or cloud requirements.
  6. Read current terms. Recheck versions, allowances, eligibility, commercial-use rules, and prices on the official pages before starting a project.
