There is no reliable “uncensored” label that guarantees a chatbot will answer every legitimate question, be accurate, or protect your data. Choose by checking two things separately: whether the exact product handles your intended tasks with reasonable refusal behavior, and what it does with your prompts, outputs, files, and feedback.

Training opt-outs, temporary chats, deletion, human review, and data storage are different controls. Compare the specific account tier and feature you plan to use—not a provider’s broad privacy claims—and verify the current settings before entering sensitive information.

What does “uncensored” mean when choosing a chatbot?

“Uncensored” is not a standardized product feature. In practice, people usually mean fewer refusals or broader discussion of legitimate subjects. That preference says nothing by itself about whether answers are true, safe, unbiased, or private. xAI, for example, cautions that Grok can provide inaccurate or inappropriate information. xAI’s consumer FAQ

Instead of looking for a promise of unrestricted answers, test whether a service can perform your actual, permissible tasks. Assess response quality and refusal behavior separately from data handling. A chatbot that refuses less is not necessarily more useful or more private.

How to compare chatbot privacy and refusal behavior

Apply this checklist to the exact product, plan, region, and feature you expect to use. Policies and settings can change, so confirm the current terms before sharing confidential or personal information.

  1. Check training and improvement rules. Find out whether prompts and outputs are used to improve models by default, only after opt-in, or unless you opt out. Confirm whether the control applies only to future chats and whether safety review, feedback, or other exceptions are described.
  2. Check retention and deletion separately. Ask how long chats, files, logs, transcripts, and feedback are kept. Determine whether deletion removes content immediately, on a schedule, or only from the visible history—and whether different features follow different rules.
  3. Identify possible human or operator access. Look for stated review for safety, support, security, or legal purposes. With self-hosting, include administrators and anyone who can reach the server, database, credentials, storage, or backups in your trust boundary.
  4. Match the policy to the product. Consumer chat, a business workspace, an API, and a self-hosted interface may have different terms. Do not assume a business or API promise applies to a personal account, or that a consumer feature describes API handling.
  5. Test the tasks you care about. Try representative legitimate prompts and note both whether the chatbot responds and whether the answer is useful. Do not treat fewer refusals as proof of accuracy or privacy, and follow the service’s terms.
  6. Verify what temporary or private modes actually change. Check whether a mode affects chat history, model training, retention, or staff access. The label alone does not tell you which data pathways remain.

How the main options differ

The following examples illustrate why one overall “private” score would be misleading: the providers describe different products and controls, and their policies are not a common independent audit.

Option Training controls Temporary or private mode Retention and possible access Who operates storage Scope of the cited terms
OpenAI consumer ChatGPT Personal-service content may be used for training; users can opt out, after which new conversations are not used for training. Temporary Chat does not appear in history, use or create memories, or train models. The policy says certain interaction data is retained; training controls do not mean immediate deletion or no review. OpenAI operates the consumer service. OpenAI policy updated March 13, 2026; verify current settings and product scope. OpenAI policy
OpenAI business products and API Inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless the customer opts in. Not stated in the cited policy as equivalent to consumer Temporary Chat. The cited policy does not make the training default equivalent to deletion or no review. OpenAI operates the service; customers should also check their agreement and controls. OpenAI policy updated March 13, 2026. OpenAI policy
Anthropic consumer Claude Chats and coding sessions may be used for improvement when the user allows it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or under another explicit training opt-in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. Incognito chats are excluded from improvement even if Model Improvement is enabled. Thumbs-up/down feedback stores the related conversation in the secured back end for up to five years and may be used for analysis or training as allowed by law. Safety-review cases are also identified in the guidance. Anthropic operates the consumer service. Consumer guidance dated March 16, 2026; it does not establish commercial or API terms. Anthropic API Feature- and organization-specific; consult the applicable API terms. Consumer Incognito mode is not the same as API zero data retention. Zero data retention (ZDR) means prompts and responses are not stored at rest after a response is returned, but some stateful features are ineligible and have their own retention policy. Eligibility and feature coverage matter. Anthropic or, where applicable, a third-party cloud platform; check platform-specific terms. Anthropic API retention documentation. xAI consumer Grok Settings control whether Grok content is used for training; Private Chat is excluded from training. Private Chat is described as excluded from training. xAI says Private Chat is deleted from its systems within 30 days. Authorized personnel may review conversations for specified business purposes. xAI operates the consumer service. xAI Consumer FAQs. xAI FAQ
Self-hosted interface, such as Open WebUI Depends on the model and endpoint connected; the interface alone does not determine provider training practices. Open WebUI documents temporary chats, but the effect depends on the deployment and connected services. Operators control infrastructure and may have access through databases, hosts, persistent volumes, secrets, or unencrypted backups. The deploying organization or individual operates the interface and storage; a remote model provider may receive prompts. Open WebUI documentation on chat data privacy and encryption. What the privacy controls mean in practice

Training opt-out is not deletion

An opt-out addresses whether covered content is used to improve models; it does not establish zero collection, immediate deletion, or an absence of human review. OpenAI’s policy treats training controls and Temporary Chat as separate details, and also says certain interaction data is retained. Read the rule for the particular feature you use rather than inferring other protections from a training setting.

Temporary and private modes have defined limits

OpenAI says, “When you use ChatGPT, you can also use Temporary Chat from the dropdown.” Its policy says those chats do not appear in history, use or create memories, or train models. That description should not be expanded into a claim that no data is retained or accessible.

xAI says, “When using Private Chat, your content and interactions are not used for model training.” The same FAQ says Private Chat is deleted from xAI’s systems within 30 days and that authorized personnel may review conversations for specified purposes. Training exclusion, deletion timing, and possible access are three separate facts.

Feedback can follow different rules from ordinary chats

Anthropic’s consumer guidance says Claude Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, but it also describes safety-review and explicit-opt-in cases. It further says that submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can retain the related conversation in the secured back end for up to five years and that it may be used for analysis or training as allowed by law. A mode’s normal-chat rule does not automatically describe what happens when you submit feedback.

When a business/API plan or self-hosting may fit

Business and API services

Business and API arrangements may have different defaults and retention terms from consumer chat apps. OpenAI says business product inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless customers opt in. Anthropic’s API documentation describes ZDR, but eligibility, feature coverage, stateful features, and third-party cloud platform differences matter. For regulated or confidential work, review the actual agreement, eligible feature list, retention terms, and organizational controls instead of relying on a consumer mode’s name.

Self-hosted chat

Self-hosting can give an organization control over storage, endpoints, and access measures. Open WebUI documents measures including database encryption, TLS, role-based access controls, temporary chats, and separate deployments. That control is useful only if the operator also manages the infrastructure responsibly: administrators, persistent volumes, secrets, and backups can remain within the trust boundary.

A self-hosted interface does not guarantee that prompts stay local. If it sends conversation context to a remote model endpoint, that provider becomes part of the data flow. Vellum’s documentation describes an architecture using a local Ollama instance while noting that cloud model calls send conversation context to the model provider; treat that as an illustration of routing, not a guarantee for every local AI setup. A practical decision rule

  • For everyday, non-sensitive tasks, choose the consumer service that handles your legitimate prompts well, then confirm its training and history settings.
  • For confidential organizational work, compare the exact business or API contract, retention terms, review provisions, eligible features, and administrator controls.
  • For greater control over storage and infrastructure, consider self-hosting only if you can manage the server, database, secrets, backups, access, and model endpoint.
  • Before using any service for sensitive information, check its current policy and the exact setting you plan to rely on. Do not infer anonymity or total privacy from “uncensored,” “private,” “temporary,” or “incognito.”
