Choose an AI agent platform by separately verifying workforce sign-in, account lifecycle automation, agent identity, authorization, auditability, and the division of security responsibilities. A “supports SSO and SCIM” claim is not enough: ask the vendor to demonstrate how a user’s access is removed, how an agent’s credentials and permissions are controlled, and what evidence your team can inspect afterward.
What should you compare across platforms?
Use the same evidence-based criteria for every shortlisted service. Ask for product documentation and a live demonstration, and record what is supported, what requires configuration, and what remains your responsibility.
| Area | What to verify | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Federation | Supported identity providers and SAML or OIDC options; stable unique identifiers; group-based access; issuer and assertion validation; emergency access. | Configuration documentation and a demonstration of sign-in, group assignment, and the emergency-access path. |
| Lifecycle | Provisioning and deprovisioning automation; role-change handling; termination signal behavior; cleanup of sessions and tokens. | A joiner, mover, and leaver demonstration with timestamps and the resulting audit records. |
| Agent identity | Whether agents have distinct identities; inventory and ownership; credential scope, rotation, expiration, and revocation. | An identity-to-credential map showing how an agent is identified and how its access can be withdrawn. |
| Authorization | Least privilege across workspaces, data sources, tools, and actions; approval requirements for sensitive operations. | Examples of allowed and denied actions, including an approval workflow where applicable. |
| Audit and response | Attribution of agent activity; administrator records; export, alerting, retention, and investigation capabilities. | Sample events and documentation of access controls and retention for those records. |
| Responsibility and fit | Provider-operated controls, customer configuration duties, hosting and data boundaries, and fit with your threat model. | A responsibility matrix checked against the service contract, technical documentation, and your planned configuration. |
These are evaluation criteria, not a claim that every platform exposes every feature. Treat unverified capabilities as unknown until the vendor supplies evidence.
How do SSO and provisioning fit together?
Authentication answers whether a person can sign in. Provisioning creates, updates, or removes an account and its attributes. Authorization determines what that account—or an agent acting with delegated access—may do. These controls are related, but one does not prove the others.

NIST describes SCIM as a way to automate identity provisioning, deprovisioning, and lifecycle management; SCIM does not itself authenticate users or authorize access. Ask which identity provider and federation methods the SaaS supports, such as SAML or OIDC, and whether sign-in is bound to a stable, unique identifier. Confirm that groups can drive access assignment and that the service validates the identity issuer and assertion integrity.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says: “You should use SSO for authentication of your users to SaaS applications where possible.” Its SaaS guidance also highlights the identity provider as a dependency to consider in incident planning. Plan how authorized staff can reach the service if that provider is unavailable rather than relying on an undocumented shared administrator credential.
Check what provisioning sends
For SCIM or another provisioning API, ask whether data is pushed, pulled, or both; which accounts and attributes are in scope; and how the API is protected. NIST SP 800-63C advises limiting provisioning attributes to those needed for service, audit, and security purposes, and says the identity provider should document the attributes and their purpose. Access to a provisioning API is separate from a user’s authenticated session.

How can you verify deprovisioning end to end?
Do not accept “SCIM supported” as proof that offboarding reliably removes access. NIST SP 800-63C says an identity provider should signal downstream services when an account is terminated or disabled; when a relying party receives that signal, it should remove the federated identifier binding. Have the vendor show the full path in your intended configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
- Create a test identity: provision a user through the identity provider and confirm the expected account, group membership, and assigned role in the SaaS application.
- Change access: update the user’s group or role and observe whether the platform applies the change without creating an unintended period of excess access.
- Disable or terminate the identity: initiate the action in the identity provider, then verify when the SaaS account loses access and whether active sessions, tokens, and connected tools are also handled.
- Inspect the consequences: review the audit event and check what happens to agent-created work and records, including whether they remain available to an authorized owner.
- Test recovery: if your organization permits emergency access when SSO is unavailable, test that route and confirm it is individually controlled and monitored.
NIST distinguishes disabling an account while retaining records from terminating it and removing associated identifiers and identity information, subject to applicable retention rules. Ask the provider to explain how each state is represented and what data remains after either action. Do not assume that disabling a user automatically revokes every token or removes every delegated credential; verify those effects directly.
What identity should an AI agent use?
Ask whether the platform runs an agent under a human identity, an application identity, or a distinct agent identity. Then establish how that identity is created, inventoried, associated with an owner, scoped, rotated, expired, and revoked. A workforce account lifecycle alone does not answer what an agent can access or how its activity is attributed.

NIST’s NCCoE concept paper discusses approaches for enterprise agent use cases rather than prescribing one universal design. It identifies OIDC for interoperable authentication and identity assertions, SPIFFE/SPIRE for cryptographic workload identity and attestation, NGAC for attribute-based policy capabilities, and SCIM as a possible way to support agent identity lifecycle. The paper is a concept project, not a certification list or a final platform-buying standard.
Trace delegated access
Ask the vendor to show how the service distinguishes the agent from the user on whose behalf it acts. Require a mapping from each agent identity to its allowed tools, operations, data scope, and expiration or revocation events. Check whether agent access can be withdrawn without disabling the human’s account, and whether credentials are unique to the agent or shared across agents or users.
For every credential used to reach a connected tool or data source, establish who issued it, what it permits, where it is stored, how it is rotated, and how it is revoked. If the vendor cannot identify the agent and relevant user context in its records, determine whether your monitoring and incident-response requirements can still be met.

How granular are authorization, approvals, and audit?
Compare permission boundaries rather than relying on a broad role list. Check access at the platform, workspace or project, data-source, tool, and individual-action levels. Ask whether high-impact actions can be blocked or require human approval, who can change those policies, and how policy changes are recorded.
NCSC guidance recommends least privilege, group-based permissions, minimizing administrator accounts, and logging privileged access for SaaS. Microsoft’s published AI responsibility guidance assigns customers ongoing duties for identity and least privilege, action authorization, human oversight, and acceptable-use governance. That is vendor guidance; confirm the technical and contractual boundary for the specific service you are buying.
Request attributable audit records
Ask for sample records covering agent creation, credential changes, tool calls, authorization decisions, denied actions, human approvals, and deprovisioning. Verify whether records identify both the agent and the relevant user or context, can be exported to your monitoring system, and have documented retention and access controls. These are due-diligence questions, not a guarantee that every product supplies each event.

Who is responsible for which controls?
Responsibility changes with the service model and deployment. NIST SP 800-210, a final 2020 publication, gives access-control guidance across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS and emphasizes that the models have different control characteristics. Microsoft provides one AI-specific vendor example in which responsibility for areas such as agent identity, least privilege, action authorization, logging, and runtime controls varies by deployment model.
Use a responsibility matrix for the exact service and configuration under consideration. For each control, name the party that operates it, the party that configures it, and the party that verifies it. Reconcile the matrix with the contract, technical documentation, and your own deployment settings; do not treat a generic shared-responsibility diagram as a substitute for that review.
What should you ask the vendor to demonstrate?
- A user joining, changing roles or groups, and leaving, with the resulting SaaS account state and audit evidence.
- How SSO identifiers and group claims are validated, and what access path is monitored if the identity provider is unavailable.
- How a distinct agent identity and its credentials are scoped, rotated, and revoked without unnecessarily disabling a human user.
- How the platform limits tool and data access, handles sensitive actions, and records approvals or denials.
- Which activity records can be exported, who can access them, how long they are retained, and what the provider versus your organization must configure.
Standards and product capabilities are evolving. NIST’s agent identity initiative describes ongoing work on interoperability, agent authentication and identity infrastructure, and security evaluations. Verify current protocol support, feature availability, licensing, and configuration with each shortlisted provider; do not infer a capability from a roadmap or a general standards reference.
