You can avoid Kindle lock-screen ads without assuming that paying extra for an ad-free Kindle is your only option. Compare the final cost of an ad-free Kindle with the ad-supported model plus Amazon’s removal charge, then weigh that against alternatives such as Kobo’s Clara BW and Libra Colour. The right choice depends on whether Kindle Store access, color, library borrowing, or a lower total price matters most to you.
What Kindle ads are—and how removal works
Amazon says Kindle e-reader ads appear on the sleep screen and on the home screen, where they are marked “Sponsored.” Its description does not say that ads appear over the text while you read. See Amazon Customer Service’s “Learn More About Ads On Kindle and Fire Tablet”.
Amazon documents a one-time payment to unsubscribe from ads and sponsored screensavers on an eligible registered device. The support route is through Devices, then Special Offers, then Remove offers. The cited support material does not establish one universal fee; the amount and availability can depend on the device, account, and market. Check the option and charge shown for your own device before treating ad removal as a fixed-cost alternative.
Compare the four practical options
| Option | Best fit | What to weigh | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad-free Kindle configuration | Readers who want Kindle Store and Amazon account continuity without Special Offers | Amazon offers ad-free configurations, but the available model and price can vary. | Confirm the listing’s ad status, regional availability, and final checkout price. |
| Kindle with Special Offers, then removal | Readers for whom the lower initial listing may offset a later removal payment | Ads appear on the sleep and home screens; removal is a one-time payment where available. | Check the charge and whether Remove offers appears for your registered device and account. |
| Kobo Clara BW | Text-first readers who want a compact black-and-white e-reader | Kobo’s US listing showed $159.99 when checked, with a 6-inch Carta 1300 HD display, 16GB, IPX8 water protection, and ComfortLight PRO. | Check today’s price, seller, local library support, and whether your existing books can be used. |
| Kobo Libra Colour | Readers who want color, page-turn buttons, a larger screen, or stylus use | Kobo’s US lineup showed $259.99 when checked. It has a 7-inch color display, 32GB, waterproofing, buttons, and Kobo Stylus compatibility. Black-and-white content is 300 PPI; color content is 150 PPI. | Compare the current price and accessory compatibility, and decide whether color and controls justify the higher cost. |
Kobo prices above are manufacturer-listed US price snapshots from October 4, 2026, not guaranteed current prices or prices for other markets. Amazon’s cited pages do not establish a universal ad-removal amount, so compare the actual figures displayed at checkout or in your account.

When Kobo Clara BW makes more sense
The Clara BW is the straightforward alternative if you mostly read novels or other text and want a small monochrome screen. Kobo’s US product page lists a 6-inch glare-free E Ink Carta 1300 HD touchscreen at 1448 × 1072 resolution, 16GB storage, IPX8 water protection, and ComfortLight PRO for adjustable brightness and color temperature. It also lists support for EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, and CBZ/CBR formats. See Kobo Clara BW.
Kobo says the Clara BW can be submerged for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 metres of water. A compatible sleep cover is sold separately. Kobo also notes that OverDrive/Libby is available only in select countries and that ebook availability varies by library location. Check your local library and book formats before switching: format support alone does not guarantee that a Kindle Store purchase will transfer or open on another platform.

When Kobo Libra Colour is worth considering
Choose the Libra Colour if color is useful for your reading—such as comics, color illustrations, or annotations—and you value physical page-turn buttons or stylus compatibility. Kobo’s US lineup lists a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 color screen, 32GB storage, waterproofing, page-turn buttons, and Kobo Stylus compatibility. Its specifications distinguish 300 PPI for black-and-white content from 150 PPI for color content. See Kobo Libra Colour.
That resolution difference is part of the trade-off: color adds flexibility, but color content is rendered at lower pixel density than black-and-white content on this device. If most of your reading is ordinary prose, the Clara BW’s smaller screen and lower listed price may be a better match. Kobo’s US lineup listed the Libra Colour at $259.99 when checked on October 4, 2026; verify current pricing and whether the stylus or other accessories are included before purchase.

Check your library and reading workflow before switching
An e-reader’s hardware is only part of the decision. Before leaving Kindle, check how you get books, whether your library supports borrowing on the device in your country, and whether your existing titles can be read in the new ecosystem. Kobo’s product information confirms support for several file formats and country-limited Libby/OverDrive availability, but it does not establish that every library, title, or account will work everywhere.
- Store and account: Decide whether keeping Kindle Store access and your Amazon account history is worth the cost of an ad-free Kindle or removal charge.
- Formats and DRM: Check the format and any copy protection on books you already own. A listed format such as EPUB or PDF does not by itself guarantee compatibility with a particular purchased ebook.
- Library borrowing: Confirm support with your local library and check the country limits Kobo identifies for OverDrive/Libby.
- Screen and controls: Choose 6 inches for a compact text reader or consider the 7-inch Libra Colour if its larger display, color, or page-turn buttons matter to you.
- Lighting and water protection: Clara BW lists adjustable brightness and color temperature plus IPX8 protection; check the product specifications for the model you intend to buy.
Calculate the actual cost, not just the first listed price
For a Kindle, compare the ad-free configuration’s checkout price with the ad-supported configuration plus the removal charge Amazon shows for your registered device, if the option is available. Do not assume the cheaper initial listing remains cheaper after removal, or that every buyer receives the same offer. For Kobo, compare the current local price of the device with the features you will use, and account for any separately sold accessory you want. Manufacturer prices and stock can change after the October 4, 2026 check.

If you want to keep Kindle Store integration, a Kindle configured without Special Offers—or an eligible Kindle with offers removed—may be the simplest route. If you are open to another store and workflow, the Clara BW is the more focused text-reading alternative; the Libra Colour is for readers who will make use of color, buttons, or stylus support. Verify your account’s removal option, local pricing, and library compatibility before deciding.
