A person’s few taps do not, by themselves, tell you which AAC app, vocabulary, screen layout, or access method will suit them. Start with how they communicate now and what they need to say, then compare options with the person and their communication partners in real situations. A useful choice supports reliable access today and can grow as communication needs change.
What does “just a few taps” mean for this person?
It could describe a preference for quick, direct choices, a small set of messages the person currently uses, difficulty making accurate or repeated movements, or a need to reach certain messages quickly. Those situations call for different features. Do not treat tap count as an assessment of language ability or a reason to limit future communication.
Before comparing apps, consider what the person communicates, how they select choices, where and with whom they communicate, and what support is available. Relevant factors include language and literacy, vision and hearing, sensory and motor abilities, motivation, and existing ways of communicating. AAC may supplement speech in situations where speech is not enough; speech does not rule out considering AAC. ASHA’s AAC Practice Portal and its National Joint Committee AAC guidance describe individualized decision-making rather than selection based on one feature alone.

Compare access methods, not just apps
Access is how the person makes a selection. The right method depends on the person’s movement and positioning, accuracy, and trial experience—not on a general rule that fewer taps call for a smaller display or simpler app.

Direct selection
With direct selection, the person chooses an item directly, for example by touching it or using another generated movement or signal. It can make choices immediate, but may require more precise motor movement.
Indirect selection or scanning
With scanning, the system presents choices in sequence. The person selects using an agreed movement, vocalization, or switch. This can require less fine-motor control, but introduces intermediary steps. ASHA outlines these distinctions in its AAC Practice Portal.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Access and accuracy | Can the person select reliably using touch, scanning, or another input? Do positioning or an accessory improve access? |
| Language and communication | Does the vocabulary support the person’s communication functions? Are the symbol type and number appropriate? Are written communication options needed? |
| Display and speech output | Is the display usable for this person? Does the speech output or voice work for them and their communication partners? |
| Flexibility and growth | Can vocabulary and system features change as abilities and communication needs change? |
| Everyday fit | Does the system work across the person’s settings and partners? Is it portable, and does the person prefer and want to use it? |
| Practical support | Is it affordable and maintainable for the people supporting it? Is there a plan for backup access? |
These are comparison questions, not a scoring formula: a feature matters insofar as it helps the person communicate. ASHA’s feature-matching guidance includes communication needs, input, display, output, positioning, portability, preference, affordability, and maintenance.
Choose for current needs without setting a ceiling
An early setup should not become a permanent limit. Check that the system supports a range of communication functions and can be modified as the person learns or their needs change. A simple starting arrangement can be appropriate, but the few messages used now do not establish the person’s full language potential or future vocabulary needs.

Selection is an ongoing process: revisit the system as communication changes and use trial results to refine the choice. Do not infer a suitable app, grid size, vocabulary, or access method from tap count alone.
Plan for positioning and continuity
For some users, positioning or an accessory such as a mount or switch may affect whether the system is accessible. Evaluate it with the person and the actual device rather than assuming a particular accessory is necessary.
