Choose data-center air filtration by mapping where air and contaminants enter, setting the required cleanliness target, and checking that the filter will work within the cooling system’s airflow and pressure limits. MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 is ASHRAE guidance for incoming air in applicable cases, not a universal specification; equipment and site conditions can change the right choice.
Start with the air path and contamination sources
Identify every air source before choosing a filter: outdoor-air intakes, airside economizers, recirculated air, leakage paths, and air brought in with people, equipment, and packaging. An economizer can reduce mechanical cooling by using outside air, but it also makes the intake path a potential route for outdoor particles and gases.
Contamination can originate inside the facility, too. Boxes and dirty equipment can bring in dust and accelerate filter loading; unpacking in the room, paper dust, and entry contamination are other sources. ASHRAE also identifies sulfur compounds and other gases as possible corrosive contaminants in data-center environments. Its Data Centers and Telecommunications Facilities handbook chapter discusses these contamination pathways.
Set a cleanliness target before selecting a rating
Use the cleanliness requirement for the facility and installed equipment, rather than treating a filter rating as the target itself. ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9’s 2011 Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines for Data Centers identifies ISO Class 8 cleanliness. That guideline says incoming air may be filtered with MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13; for airside economizers, the selection depends on site-specific conditions. It also describes MERV 8 for continuous room-air filtration in a specific no-economizer case, not as a general substitute for intake filtration.

Confirm which standard, measurement protocol, and project or equipment requirement applies to your installation. The 2011 ASHRAE guidance is explicit but dated, so verify current requirements before writing a specification.
What MERV rating do you need?
For incoming air in applicable conditions, MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 is a useful starting point from the 2011 ASHRAE guideline. If the system uses an airside economizer or has potentially contaminated intake air, check the equipment documentation and site measurements before deciding whether that starting point is adequate.

For example, NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD H100 data-center design guide specifies at least MERV 13, or listed regional alternatives, when airside-economizer operation or potentially contaminated source air is involved. It also specifies ISO Class 8 rack-area cleanliness and a maximum particle count of 3,520,000 at 0.5 μm/m³ for no longer than 15 minutes. These are requirements in NVIDIA’s documented design case, not a universal mandate for all data centers.
Do not assume MERV, EN 779, and ISO 16890 ratings convert exactly. NVIDIA cautions that the standards use significantly different test and evaluation procedures, making direct comparisons potentially misleading. ASHRAE’s 2024 Handbook chapter on particulate air cleaners describes ISO 16890’s ePM classification. Ask suppliers for the test method and report behind a stated rating, along with performance and resistance data for the intended operating conditions.

Do you need HEPA filtration?
The cited ASHRAE and NVIDIA guidance does not establish HEPA filtration as a default data-center requirement. Consider it only if measured contamination, a specific equipment requirement, or a defined cleanliness target justifies it and the air-handling system can accommodate it. A higher-efficiency filter is not automatically a better choice if its airflow resistance prevents the system from delivering required air.
Check airflow, fit, energy, and maintenance
Filter selection is a system decision. ASHRAE’s 2024 Handbook chapter on particulate air cleaners identifies cleanliness, initial and maintenance cost, energy effectiveness, available space, and airflow resistance as selection considerations. Confirm that the proposed filter’s dimensions and depth match the air handler, that it seals properly in the frame, and that its pressure drop remains within the system’s limits as it loads with dust.

- Request the filter’s test method, performance report, airflow resistance or pressure-drop data, dimensions, and depth.
- Check compatibility against the air handler’s available space, fan capability, and required airflow, including expected loaded-filter conditions.
- Compare purchase cost with replacement frequency, energy implications, procurement availability, and the labor needed for inspection and replacement.
- Do not rely on an advertised efficiency rating alone; verify performance under the relevant test method and operating conditions.
A “MERV 13 HVAC air filter” is a category, not a complete specification. Check your unit’s dimensions, frame depth, airflow requirements, and pressure-drop limits before ordering; a generic filter size or model cannot be recommended without those facility details.

Particle filtration and gas-phase treatment solve different problems. A particulate filter rating does not demonstrate protection against corrosive gases. Use measured site conditions to determine whether a separate, engineered gas-phase solution is warranted, rather than inferring the need from geography or a particulate rating.

ASHRAE describes visual inspection for airborne dust and the use of copper or silver coupons with laboratory analysis to assess gaseous corrosivity. These methods address different indicators: visible dust helps assess particulate loading, while coupon results can help evaluate corrosive gas exposure. Select monitoring appropriate to the suspected contaminant and facility requirements.
Plan inspection and replacement around measured loading
There is no single replacement interval established by the cited guidance for every data center. Set an inspection and replacement plan using observed filter loading and the air handler’s limits, including pressure drop and required airflow. Control avoidable indoor sources—such as dusty packaging and dirty equipment—to reduce unnecessary loading. If a filter is approaching the system’s pressure limit or airflow requirement, follow the equipment and filter supplier’s operating guidance rather than waiting for a calendar interval.
Quick Recap
A practical selection sequence
- Map the air path: document outside-air intakes, economizer operation, recirculation, leakage, and likely indoor sources.
- Characterize contaminants: assess particulate and gaseous contamination using appropriate inspection and monitoring.
- Set the target: confirm the applicable cleanliness standard and any installed-equipment requirements.
- Compare tested filters: request the test method, performance report, pressure-drop data, dimensions, and depth; do not treat MERV, EN, and ISO values as exact equivalents.
- Verify system fit: ensure the filter meets airflow and pressure limits in clean and loaded conditions, while accounting for energy, space, and service needs.
- Define upkeep: establish inspections and replacements based on loading and equipment limits, and evaluate gas-phase treatment separately if measurements indicate corrosive gases.
