There is no universal best aim or controller setup for every PS5 shooter. Start with the game’s default settings, then change one control at a time in a repeatable practice situation. Keep a change only if it makes both fine corrections and larger turns feel manageable.
Start with a repeatable baseline
Use the game’s default settings, or a setup you can already control, as your baseline. Test changes in the same game mode and, where possible, with the same weapon or sight, target distance, and practice task. Compare small target corrections as well as quick, larger turns. Change only one setting at a time so you can tell what made a difference.
This is a practical way to compare your own feel, not a measured test or a guarantee of better accuracy. Official guidance offers no universally optimal numeric sensitivity, deadzone, response curve, or aim-assist value across shooters.
What the aim settings change
Sensitivity
Sensitivity controls how quickly your view direction changes in response to stick movement. If turning feels too slow, try increasing it in small steps. If small corrections repeatedly overshoot, try lowering it. These are tuning heuristics, not a tested preset.

Response curve
A response curve determines how stick tilt maps to in-game input across the stick’s travel. PlayStation describes a gradual curve as requiring more tilt for smooth movement, while a steep curve responds faster to small tilts. A curve that feels responsive for one player or game may make another player’s fine aim harder to control.
Deadzone
A deadzone is the part of the stick’s travel ignored before input registers. In Sony’s example, a 10% deadzone means the game does not register stick input until the tilt passes 10%. Lowering it can make input feel more immediate, but adjust cautiously: unintended movement or an unstable stick can make a very low setting difficult to use.

Aim assist
Aim-assist options and terminology differ by game. The official example in the sources is Bungie’s Marathon; it does not establish a setting that is best across PS5 shooters. Use the options and explanations provided by the game you are playing rather than copying a value from another title.
Choose a button layout that suits your priorities
Consider which actions you need to reach quickly and whether the default layout makes those actions awkward. On PS5, you can remap DualSense buttons at Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller. A changed layout may take time to become familiar, so judge it after using it consistently rather than after a brief trial.

Adjust settings on PS5 and DualSense Edge
Standard DualSense button assignments
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Go to Accessibility > Controllers.
- Select Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller and configure the assignments you want.
PlayStation documents button remapping here; the sources do not establish that remapping itself improves aim.
DualSense Edge custom profiles
For the optional DualSense Edge wireless controller, open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles. PlayStation says profiles can save button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone, trigger deadzone, vibration intensity, and trigger-effect intensity. In the stick settings, you can choose a stick, test it, select and adjust a curve, and set a deadzone. Saved profiles are useful if you want to reuse controller-level adjustments; Edge is not required to tune a shooter’s in-game settings.

Vibration and trigger effects
PS5’s general controller settings also include vibration and trigger-effect intensity. These are comfort and feedback controls; the available official guidance does not establish that changing them improves aim.

In a PlayStation Blog post published April 28, 2026, Bungie recommends that most players begin with Marathon’s defaults and make small changes to suit their preferences. Bungie describes Classic as the standard curve used in its action games. Its DualSense Edge example pairs Precise on the right stick for controlled fine aim with Quick on the left for responsive movement, and advises lowering deadzones carefully if the controller is stable. These are Marathon-specific recommendations, not a preset for other shooters. Bungie’s post also states, “There is no single perfect sensitivity setting for everyone.”

When a change is worth keeping
- Keep a sensitivity adjustment if it makes turning more manageable without making small corrections unreliable.
- Keep a curve or deadzone change only if it feels controllable during both fine aiming and larger turns, without unwanted input.
- Keep a remapped layout if important actions are easier for you to reach after you have had time to adapt.
- If a change makes control less consistent, return to the baseline and test a smaller adjustment or a different setting.
