Choose a Windows laptop first for the work you actually do—your apps, budget, screen, keyboard, ports, portability and battery needs. Buy a Copilot+ PC only if you have a specific reason to use features that require that class of hardware, and verify the exact configuration meets Microsoft’s requirements. An “AI PC” label by itself does not tell you whether the laptop is right for you.

Do you need a Copilot+ PC?

Not necessarily. A regular Windows laptop may be the better choice if its price, performance, display, ergonomics or compatibility suit you and you do not need a feature that requires Copilot+ hardware. Some AI services run in the cloud or through third-party apps and can have different requirements; Copilot+ is not a prerequisite for every AI function in Windows or every AI application.

Consider Copilot+ when you have a particular feature in mind and Microsoft identifies it as requiring this PC class. Check that feature’s current requirements and availability before buying: features can vary by device, configuration, region and language, and some require an internet connection, an account or a subscription.

Start with your everyday requirements

Compare the whole laptop, not just its processor or AI branding. Make a short list of the apps and devices you rely on, then assess the following against the exact model and configuration you might buy.

  • Keyboard and touchpad: Check the layout, key feel and touchpad area, especially if you type for long periods or use the laptop without a mouse.
  • Portability and battery: Compare the actual weight and charging arrangement with your commute and workspace. Treat manufacturer “up to” battery figures as claims, not a prediction of your runtime.
  • Ports and webcam: Make sure the built-in ports support your monitors and accessories, or include the cost and inconvenience of adapters or a dock. Check webcam quality if you take frequent calls.
  • Memory and storage: Choose enough RAM for your apps and multitasking and enough storage for your files. Check whether either component can be upgraded if that matters to you.
  • Price, warranty and availability: Compare the same configuration, warranty coverage and local listing. A model name can cover multiple configurations, and availability and prices vary by retailer and region.

What makes a laptop a Copilot+ PC?

Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements specify these minimums for Copilot+ PCs: a compatible NPU capable of 40+ TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. Microsoft currently names AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series, Intel Core Ultra 200V and 300V series, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X series as qualifying processor families. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements for the current requirements.

These are category thresholds, not a complete measure of speed, battery life or value. Do not assume a laptop qualifies just because it has an NPU or uses a processor from a named family. Check the exact configuration’s NPU, memory type and capacity, and storage against Microsoft’s requirements; the manufacturer’s specific product listing should identify the configuration being sold.

Compare standard Windows laptops and Copilot+ PCs

What to compare Standard Windows laptop Copilot+ PC
Access to AI features Can use cloud services and third-party AI apps subject to their requirements; does not meet the Copilot+ hardware threshold unless the exact configuration qualifies. Meets Microsoft’s Copilot+ hardware requirements when the exact configuration qualifies; individual features can still have additional requirements or availability limits.
Hardware check Choose processor, RAM and storage for your apps and workload. Verify a compatible 40+ TOPS NPU, 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 and 256 GB SSD/UFS, as well as the configuration you intend to buy.
Apps and devices Check compatibility for your exact processor architecture, apps and peripherals. Make the same checks; processor architecture can affect compatibility, including on Arm-based systems.
Everyday fit Compare screen, keyboard, touchpad, ports, webcam, size, weight, warranty and price. Compare those same factors; Copilot+ status does not determine ergonomics or overall value.
Battery Look for independent tests of the exact model where available, using conditions similar to your workload. Use the same approach; Microsoft says runtime varies with configuration, use, network and settings.

Check software compatibility before choosing a processor architecture

For specialized software, games, security tools or essential peripherals, confirm support for the exact processor architecture, device and app version with the software developer or device manufacturer. This is particularly important if you are considering an Arm-based laptop: Microsoft’s May 20, 2024 launch blog reported that 87% of total app minutes spent in apps had native Arm versions at that time. That dated Microsoft figure is not a current compatibility audit and does not establish support for any particular app.

Microsoft also reported launch-period maximum claims of up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of web browsing. Those were vendor-reported figures from May 20, 2024, not independent results for every current laptop or a guarantee of your runtime. Microsoft notes that battery life varies significantly with device configuration, usage, network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings and other factors. Compare battery claims fairly

Battery results are useful only when the test conditions are comparable. Look for independent testing of the exact model where available, and compare similar screen brightness, workload, wireless conditions and power settings. A video-playback result should not be treated as an estimate for a day of mixed office work, calls and browsing.

Use this buying checklist

  1. List your everyday needs. Write down your essential apps and devices, typical workload, preferred screen size, portability needs, budget and required ports.
  2. Decide whether a specific Copilot+ feature matters. Check Microsoft’s current feature requirements and availability for your region, language and intended configuration.
  3. Compare the exact hardware. For a Copilot+ PC, confirm the NPU threshold, memory type and capacity, and storage against Microsoft’s current requirements. For any laptop, check RAM, storage and upgradeability.
  4. Verify compatibility. Check the software and peripheral makers’ support information for the exact architecture, device and app version, especially for specialized or business-critical tools.
  5. Compare the complete configuration. Assess screen, keyboard, touchpad, ports, webcam, weight, warranty, local availability and total price alongside performance and battery evidence.
  6. Buy the model that fits your use. Do not pay for Copilot+ status as a substitute for checking the features you will use and the everyday details that shape your experience.
