What Windows 11 requires
Microsoft’s current requirements list a 4 GB memory minimum and 64 GB or greater storage minimum. Microsoft’s dated 2021 hardware specification gives those same figures; the current requirements pages continue to publish them. Treat them as compatibility minimums, not recommendations for comfortable everyday use.
Microsoft cautions that Windows updates and some features may require additional storage over time. The amount of space you will have available also depends on the operating system, apps, and files you keep on the device, so the 64 GB minimum does not guarantee roomy storage.

RAM and storage are only part of the decision. Microsoft lists these minimums for Windows 11:

- A compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM.
- A storage device of 64 GB or larger.
- UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable.
- TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- An HD display larger than 9 inches diagonally.
For Home and Pro editions set up for personal use, an internet connection and Microsoft account are required during initial setup. Some Windows features have additional hardware requirements, so check the requirement for any specific feature you plan to use. How much RAM should you choose?
Microsoft establishes 4 GB as the minimum, but that figure does not say how much memory will feel sufficient for your work. Consider the applications you use and how many you typically keep open at once. A PC that only meets the minimum may be a poor fit if your usual workload needs more memory; do not assume that basic Windows compatibility guarantees responsive performance.

When comparing computers, check both the installed RAM and whether the manufacturer supports upgrading it. Upgrade options depend on the exact model. Confirm them in the manufacturer’s documentation before buying rather than assuming a laptop can accept more memory later.
How much storage should you choose?
Start with the apps and personal files you expect to keep on the computer, and compare that need with the model’s capacity. The 64 GB figure is a minimum, not a universal capacity recommendation. Windows updates and certain features can require more space over time, according to Microsoft.

Check the exact PC’s storage capacity and type, along with whether storage upgrades are supported. If a feature or workload has a particular drive requirement, verify that separately rather than assuming all Windows 11 PCs need the same storage technology.
When an NVMe SSD matters
Microsoft specifies an NVMe SSD for DirectStorage games that use the Standard NVM Express Controller driver; those games also require a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. This is a feature-specific requirement, not a general requirement for every Windows 11 computer. See Microsoft’s feature requirements if DirectStorage is relevant to your games.

How to compare Windows 11 PCs
Compare the specific models you are considering against the same practical checklist:
- Compatibility: Does the model meet the complete Windows 11 checklist, including processor, firmware, TPM, graphics, and display requirements?
- Memory: How much RAM is installed, and does the manufacturer document a supported upgrade path?
- Storage: What capacity and type does it have, and can storage be upgraded on this exact model?
- Workload: Is the configuration appropriate for your applications, multitasking habits, and collection of files?
- Specific features: Does it meet any extra requirement for a feature you intend to use, such as DirectStorage?
If you are shopping for a Windows 11 PC, verify the exact listing’s specifications against the full requirements. A general product label or a large RAM or storage figure alone does not confirm compatibility.

How to check whether your current PC is eligible
For a consumer PC, Microsoft recommends checking eligibility with the PC Health Check app or Windows Update. If the device is managed by an employer or organization, ask the IT administrator about eligibility and upgrade plans.
- Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app and use its Windows 11 eligibility assessment, or check Windows Update for an eligibility assessment.
- If the PC is not eligible, review the stated compatibility issue rather than focusing only on RAM or storage; another requirement may be the blocker.
- Ask the PC manufacturer or a retailer whether the exact model supports a memory or storage upgrade. Microsoft notes that upgrades are sometimes possible, but options vary by device.
