What router do you need for wireless PC VR?
For Steam Link, Valve lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum router requirements. Its Steam Link launch guidance recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, but does not make either a requirement. Check the current Steam Link support page for supported headsets and software requirements, which can change.
For a new router, Wi-Fi 6 is a reasonable choice, but the strongest practical setup depends on your headset, streaming app, and local wireless conditions—not just the Wi-Fi generation printed on the box. VRChat’s guidance for Quest wireless streaming recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, while Steam’s baseline is lower. Neither establishes a universal Wi-Fi 6E requirement for all PC VR streaming.
Which router features matter most?

Do not treat a higher advertised Wi-Fi speed as proof of lower latency or better image quality. The available guidance sets compatibility and setup recommendations, not router-by-router performance results.

How should you connect and place the router?
- Wire the PC to the router or access point. Use Ethernet where possible; Steam and Meta support guidance recommend a wired PC connection.
- Connect the headset to the same local network. Use a compatible 5 GHz network for Steam Link’s listed minimum. Keep the headset and PC on the same local network for the streaming setup.
- Put the router near the play space. Meta support recommends the same room or line of sight, at least one metre above the ground. Reduce obstacles between the router and headset where practical.
- Use 5 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz when appropriate. Steam’s general Remote Play advice favors 5 GHz and notes that distance, walls, floors, metal, electronics, and nearby wireless networks affect signal. This is not a numerical performance guarantee for every VR app.
For its Quest wireless-streaming setup, VRChat recommends that the PC and headset share a network, preferably 5 GHz on a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router. Its guidance covers Steam Link, Air Link, and Virtual Desktop and is specific to that use case.
Do you need Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for Quest PC VR?
Not universally. Steam Link’s published minimum is Wi-Fi 5 with 5 GHz; Valve describes Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E as recommended rather than required. VRChat recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for its Quest setup. That makes Wi-Fi 6 a sensible choice when buying new, but the evidence does not establish that every Quest headset, app, or network needs Wi-Fi 6E.

Meta support’s advice to use 5 GHz AC or AX and a non-mesh configuration is best-practice guidance from a community support response, not a universal compatibility rule. If you are troubleshooting, test with the headset near the router and, if feasible, a non-mesh configuration before concluding that your router must be replaced.
Does the internet plan affect local PC VR streaming?
The cited Steam setup advice focuses on the local network between the PC and headset, including a wired PC connection and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset. It does not establish that a faster broadband subscription improves local PC VR streaming. Do not choose a router solely to match an internet-plan speed figure.

When do other wireless specifications apply?
Microsoft Mixed Reality Link is a Quest-to-PC productivity feature, not a general PC VR gaming benchmark. Microsoft specifies gigabit LAN, 802.11ac with 802.11axe recommended, 5 GHz with 6 GHz recommended, 80 MHz channel width recommended, and 90% signal recommended for that feature. It also calls for the Quest and PC to share a network/subnet and notes that low signal or 2.4 GHz can cause a pixelated display. Those figures should not be treated as universal Air Link or Steam Link requirements.

What to do if streaming is unstable
- Confirm the headset is connected to 5 GHz and that the app supports your headset and software version.
- Check that the PC is connected to the router or access point by Ethernet and that both devices are on the same local network.
- Move the router closer to the play area and reduce obstructions; wireless interference, distance, and building materials can affect signal.
- If using Air Link and problems persist, try Meta support’s suggested non-mesh configuration as a troubleshooting step, not as a claim that mesh systems always fail.
- Check current app and headset requirements before replacing hardware; a new router model is not guaranteed to improve latency or image quality.
