Compare vitamin D supplements by form (D2 or D3), amount per serving, your total intake from food and supplements, and whether the ingredient source fits your needs. In U.S. guidance, recommended intake depends on age; it is population guidance, not a personal treatment dose. D3 generally raises and maintains blood vitamin D levels more than D2, but that does not mean everyone needs a supplement.
Which is better, vitamin D2 or D3?
The two main supplement forms are vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Both are absorbed in the small intestine and raise blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the main marker used to assess vitamin D status. NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) says most evidence indicates D3 raises that marker more and keeps levels higher for longer than D2. D2 is not ineffective: ODS also reports that the two forms appear to have equivalent ability to cure rickets.
- D2: Commonly manufactured by exposing ergosterol in yeast to ultraviolet light.
- D3: Typically made from lanolin-derived material. Animal-free D3 made from lichen is also available; ask the manufacturer about ingredient sourcing and processing if this matters to you.
When comparing labels, check the form and the amount per serving. Vitamin D may be listed in micrograms (mcg) or International Units (IU): 1 mcg equals 40 IU. Compare amounts in the same units, and check how many drops, capsules, or other units make up a serving.
How much vitamin D should you take?
The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) reference amounts reported by NIH ODS are daily intake recommendations, not instructions to take that amount as a supplement. They account for minimal sun exposure. Infants’ figures are Adequate Intakes (AIs); the figures for other ages are Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). The RDA for ages 1–70 includes pregnancy and lactation.

| Age or life stage | U.S. FNB reference intake per day | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Birth through 12 months | 10 mcg (400 IU) | AI |
| Ages 1–70, including pregnancy and lactation | 15 mcg (600 IU) | RDA |
| Over age 70 | 20 mcg (800 IU) | RDA |
These values are from FNB guidance as summarized by NIH ODS; the publication year is not stated on the fact sheet. Recommendations can differ by country and professional organization, so these U.S. figures should not be treated as universal guidance.
To compare a product amount with your intake, consider vitamin D from food, fortified foods, and all supplements—not just the bottle you are choosing. The right choice also depends on age, dietary intake, life stage, and medical context. A diagnosed deficiency or clinician-directed regimen may call for an individualized plan; do not use general intake references to set a treatment dose.

What is the safe upper limit?
The FNB tolerable upper intake level (UL), as reported by NIH ODS, is the maximum daily amount from all sources that is unlikely to cause adverse effects for most people. It is not a target or a recommended dose.
| Age | UL per day |
|---|---|
| 0–6 months | 25 mcg (1,000 IU) |
| 7–12 months | 38 mcg (1,500 IU) |
| 1–3 years | 63 mcg (2,500 IU) |
| 4–8 years | 75 mcg (3,000 IU) |
| Age 9 and older, including pregnancy and lactation | 100 mcg (4,000 IU) |
These age-dependent limits apply to combined intake from food, fortified foods, and supplements. High-dose treatment can be medically appropriate in some circumstances, but that does not make a high dose suitable for self-treatment.

Excess vitamin D, most often from supplements, can cause high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) and urine (hypercalciuria). Severe toxicity can lead to kidney failure, soft-tissue calcification, heart rhythm problems, or death. NIH ODS consumer guidance lists possible symptoms of very high intake including nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion, loss of appetite, dehydration, excessive urination or thirst, and kidney stones.
Do you need a vitamin D blood test?
Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is the main indicator of vitamin D status. NIH ODS summarizes the FNB interpretation as follows:

- Multiple Benefits: These Vitamin D wellness vitamins for adult men and women support bone health, teeth health, and muscle health, and provide immune system support
- Vitamin D3 Softgels: These Vitamin D 2000 IU softgels help improve Calcium absorption and contain 50mcg of Vitamin D3, the body's preferred form of Vitamin D
- Helps slow biological aging of cells; In a clinical study, taking 2000 IU vitamin D3 supplements for 4 years helped prevent leukocyte telomere shortening, preventing the equivalent of approx 3 years of cellular aging compared with placebo in older adults
- How to Take: Adults, take one Vitamin D3 softgel daily with water and a meal for immune system support; ideally with a meal that contains dietary fats
- Below 30 nmol/L (12 ng/mL): associated with deficiency risk.
- 30 to under 50 nmol/L (12 to under 20 ng/mL): may indicate inadequacy.
- 50 nmol/L (20 ng/mL) or more: sufficient for most people.
These are guidance thresholds, not a way to diagnose yourself or decide on a treatment dose. ODS notes that concentrations associated with deficiency and optimal health have not been definitively established. It also reports that the Endocrine Society does not recommend routine 25(OH)D testing for healthy individuals. Discuss testing with a clinician when your health circumstances make it relevant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do pills, drops, or softgels absorb better?
NIH ODS reports that dietary fat enhances vitamin D absorption, although some absorption occurs without dietary fat. The available guidance does not establish a general winner among pills, softgels, drops, or other commercial formats. Choose a format you can use as directed, and follow the product label or advice from your clinician rather than assuming one delivery form is inherently superior.

When should you ask a clinician or pharmacist?
Get individualized advice before choosing or changing a supplement if you have a diagnosed deficiency, are following a clinician-directed regimen, have a relevant medical condition, or take medicines that may affect vitamin D. NIH ODS identifies selected interactions involving orlistat, statins, and steroids; that list is not exhaustive. A clinician or pharmacist can consider your medicines and overall intake together.
