Choose a record player by planning the whole audio chain, not just the turntable. You need a cartridge, a phono preamp somewhere in the system, amplification, and speakers. Before buying, check which of those parts your turntable, amplifier, or speakers already include—and make sure their connections match.

Start with the signal path

A record player’s cartridge turns stylus movement into a low-level electrical signal. A phono preamp boosts that signal and applies the equalization needed for playback. An amplifier then drives the speakers. These functions may live in separate components or be combined: a turntable can have a built-in phono preamp, powered speakers contain amplification, and some amplifiers or powered speakers have a PHONO input with a phono stage.

Map your setup before shopping:

  • Turntable: Is a cartridge included and mounted? Does the deck have a built-in phono preamp, and can you switch it off?
  • Phono stage: Is it in the turntable, amplifier, powered speakers, or an external preamp?
  • Amplification: Powered speakers have amplification built in. Passive speakers require a separate amplifier or receiver.
  • Connections: Does the turntable’s output match an available input? Check whether the chosen phono connection requires a ground wire.

For a more compact setup, a turntable with a built-in preamp and powered speakers can reduce the number of components. For a separate-component system, use an amplifier or receiver with passive speakers; if that amplifier has a PHONO input, it can provide the phono stage. Denon’s turntable guide and Crutchfield’s connection guidance explain these common arrangements.

Match the output to the input

A switchable built-in preamp usually gives you a choice between a phono-level output and a line-level output. The names and controls vary by model, so confirm them in the manual.

  • Using the turntable’s built-in preamp: Set its output to LINE and connect it to a line-level input such as AUX. Do not connect that already amplified signal to a PHONO input.
  • Using the amplifier’s PHONO input: Bypass the turntable’s built-in preamp, often with a PHONO setting, and connect the turntable to PHONO. The amplifier supplies the phono stage.
  • No phono stage in either component: Add a compatible external phono preamp between the turntable and a line-level input.

Use only one phono stage in the chain. Sending a line-level signal into another PHONO input applies phono amplification and equalization twice, which is the wrong connection. If a turntable has no switchable preamp, consult its manual to determine what output it provides and what input it needs.

Choose a cartridge you can use and maintain

Many entry-level turntables include a moving-magnet (MM) cartridge, often already mounted and aligned. Denon describes MM cartridges as common on first turntables and moving-coil (MC) cartridges as an upgrade that usually calls for more specialized equipment. This is useful general guidance, not a guarantee that a cartridge will work with every deck or phono stage.

Before choosing a replacement or upgrade, check the turntable and cartridge documentation for:

  • Mounting: Common formats include half-inch mounting and P-mount. The tonearm must support the cartridge’s format.
  • Cartridge and tonearm compatibility: Confirm the permitted cartridge dimensions or mass and any manufacturer restrictions. A cartridge that physically fits may still be unsuitable for the tonearm.
  • Output and phono-stage requirements: Cartridge output level affects the phono stage it needs; do not assume an MC cartridge can use the same setup as an MM cartridge.
  • Stylus replacement: Check whether you can replace the stylus alone, which compatible styli are documented, and whether a cartridge change would require different setup or alignment.

Audio-Technica’s 2019 cartridge guide covers mounting, output, channel separation, and tracking force. Compatibility is model-specific: Fluance, for example, publishes mass and height bounds for cartridges supported by its Reference series and describes a particular stylus-upgrade relationship between Ortofon 2M Red and Blue cartridge bodies. Those details apply to the documented Fluance models, not turntables generally.

Set up the tonearm to the cartridge’s instructions

Even an included cartridge needs correct setup. Balance the tonearm and set tracking force and anti-skate according to the exact turntable and cartridge instructions. Do not use a generic value or assume that the lightest possible tracking force is safest: Audio-Technica notes that too-light tracking can damage records as much as, or more than, too-heavy tracking.

Fluance gives one model-specific example: its guidance for the RT80/RT81 with listed cartridges specifies 2 g. That is not a universal target. Fluance also says, “Tonearm balance and tracking force are a crucial part of your turntable setup.” Incorrect balance or tracking force can contribute to skipping, distortion, or excess record wear. Follow the manual for the exact combination you own.

Decide between powered and passive speakers

Powered speakers: fewer components

Powered speakers have amplifiers built in, so they can be a straightforward match for a turntable that has a phono preamp. Confirm that the speakers have a suitable line-level input, or that they provide a PHONO input if you intend to use the turntable’s unamplified phono output. Some powered speakers also offer Bluetooth, but check that the turntable and speaker support a compatible connection if wireless playback matters to you.

Passive speakers: a separate amplifier or receiver

Passive speakers need an amplifier or receiver. This arrangement adds components and takes more space, but lets you choose the amplifier and speakers separately. Check whether the amplifier has a PHONO input; if not, you will need a turntable with a built-in phono preamp or an external one.

Neither arrangement is automatically better for sound. Choose based on your existing equipment, space, budget, desired simplicity, and plans for upgrades—not a feature list alone.

Choose convenience and upgrade features deliberately

  • Manual or automatic operation: Decide whether you want to cue and return the tonearm yourself or prefer automatic operation. Check what the specific model automates.
  • Bluetooth: Wireless output may simplify playback with compatible speakers, but it is a convenience feature, not proof of sound quality.
  • USB: A USB output can help if you genuinely plan to digitize records. Confirm the recording workflow and software requirements for the model.
  • Upgrade options: Look for documented replacement styli or compatible cartridges, plus a tonearm that permits the adjustments those upgrades need.
  • Space and budget: Account for the full system, not just the turntable. A receiver and passive speakers require more components than powered speakers, and basic care supplies and eventual stylus replacement are part of ownership.

There is no universal best model or price threshold established by these buying criteria. Check the exact model’s current documentation and choose the configuration that fits your system.

Protect records and stylus during everyday use

  • Handle records by the edges and store them upright, as Denon recommends.
  • Remove surface dust with an anti-static record brush before playback.
  • Clean the stylus with an appropriate stylus brush, following the turntable or cartridge maker’s instructions. Fluance advises brushing from back to front and avoiding chemical stylus cleaners.
  • Replace a worn stylus or other part with a documented compatible option rather than relying on appearance or a generic fit.
