Choose a USB cable only after confirming your phone and car support wired Android Auto; choose a wireless adapter only if factory-wired Android Auto already works in that car and your phone meets wireless requirements. A car’s USB port alone does not establish Android Auto compatibility.
Start by checking your phone and car
Android Auto needs a compatible phone and a compatible car or stereo. Check the requirements for your phone and vehicle before buying hardware: Google’s Android Auto requirements and setup guidance direct users to their phone and vehicle makers for device-specific confirmation.
Google’s current requirements list Android 9 or later, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable for wired projection. For wireless projection, Google lists a compatible phone with active data and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, plus a compatible car or stereo; its page says wireless projection is compatible with phones running Android 11. In the European Union, additional 5 GHz regulatory requirements apply, so check that your phone complies.
Choose the connection that fits your car
| Option | What must be compatible | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| USB cable | Wired Android Auto on the car or stereo; a compatible phone and data-capable cable | A direct connection without an extra adapter |
| Native wireless | Wireless Android Auto support on both the phone and car or stereo | Wireless use when the car already supports it |
| Wireless bridge adapter | Working factory-wired Android Auto in the car, plus a phone that meets wireless requirements | Making a compatible wired connection wireless |
Use USB for a direct connection
If the car supports wired Android Auto, connect the phone to the car’s Android Auto USB port with a high-quality data cable. This avoids adding a separate adapter. Follow any setup prompts shown on the phone or car screen.

Use native wireless when both devices support it
For first-time wireless setup, Google says to pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup. Wireless Android Auto also depends on the phone’s supported Android version and 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability.
Consider a bridge adapter only for working wired Android Auto
A bridge adapter uses the car’s existing wired Android Auto capability to connect wirelessly; it does not add Android Auto to a car that lacks it. Before buying, connect your phone directly to the car’s Android Auto USB port and confirm Android Auto appears. AAWireless says its adapter is incompatible with vehicles that already have native wireless Android Auto. Check the exact vehicle, trim, head unit, and phone against the adapter maker’s compatibility information. Motorola’s MA1 support also warns that compatibility depends on the automaker’s USB and Android Auto implementation; it identifies Mitsubishi among brands known to be incompatible.

How to choose a USB cable
Google recommends using the cable supplied with the phone first. If you need another, choose a reputable, high-quality cable that supports data, with connectors that fit the phone and the car’s Android Auto USB port. The cited guidance does not specify one connector type or cable model for every setup.
- Keep the cable under 1 metre (3 feet), as Google recommends.
- Do not use a USB hub or cable extension.
- For a third-party cable, Google recommends one that meets USB Implementers Forum standards and advises checking whether it was certified within the past two years.
Google’s exact cable guidance is: “Use a cable that’s under 1 metre (3 feet) long and don’t use USB hubs or cable extensions.” See Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance for the cable recommendations.

If wired Android Auto stops working
If Android Auto worked over USB before and has stopped, Google says replacing the cable will likely fix the problem. Check compatibility and setup before purchasing anything, then try these steps:
- Confirm that the car supports wired Android Auto and that you are using its Android Auto USB port.
- Connect the phone directly with its supplied cable or a known-good, high-quality cable under 1 metre.
- Remove any USB hub or extension.
- Follow the setup prompts on the phone and car screen.
- If the connection still fails, consult the phone and vehicle makers’ compatibility and troubleshooting guidance.
What to verify before buying an adapter
- Factory-wired support: Android Auto must already work when the phone is connected directly by cable.
- Exact vehicle fit: Check the vehicle year, trim, head unit, and automaker-specific USB implementation against the adapter maker’s compatibility information.
- Phone support: Confirm the phone meets Google’s wireless projection requirements, including Android version and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.
- Adapter support: Compare manufacturer compatibility details, available updates, setup and troubleshooting options, and seller and warranty terms.
There is no universal reliability ranking established for wireless bridge adapters. Base the decision on confirmed compatibility with your specific car and phone rather than assuming that any adapter will work.
