Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a USB-C Ethernet adapter by checking three things: the speed supported by your laptop’s USB-C connection, the Ethernet speed of every device on the network path, and the adapter’s compatibility with your operating system. USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed data rate or charging feature. Choose gigabit for a gigabit network; consider 2.5GbE only when the laptop connection and the rest of the wired network can use it. Treat power-delivery pass-through as a separate feature to verify.
Start with the speed your network can actually deliver
An adapter’s maximum Ethernet link rate is not a promise of internet speed. For a 2.5GbE connection, the laptop’s USB connection, adapter, Ethernet cable, and connected network equipment must all support the relevant rate. Plugable states that “2.5Gbps (also known as 2.5GBase-T) requires that the entire link from the USBC-E2500PD and other devices supports this speed” (Plugable USBC-E2500PD).
When gigabit is enough
A USB-C gigabit adapter is a sensible fit if your router or switch, internet service, or local network connection is limited to gigabit and you do not need faster transfers to other wired devices. Plugable lists gigabit as an alternative to its 2.5GbE adapters in its product comparison.
When to consider 2.5GbE
Consider 2.5GbE if you have, or expect to use, compatible multi-gigabit network equipment or service. A 2.5GbE adapter cannot make a gigabit router port, switch, or internet plan deliver 2.5Gbps. Also distinguish a negotiated Ethernet link rate from real-world file-transfer or internet throughput; the cited maximum is a link capability, not a measured performance result.

Check the laptop’s USB-C port and connection
A USB-C-shaped plug alone does not tell you the data rate available to an adapter. Check the laptop’s specifications for the capabilities of the particular port you plan to use, then compare those with the adapter’s host-connection requirements. Plugable lists USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 or 4 among the supported host connections for its USBC-E2500, and notes that performance is reduced when connected over USB 2.0 Type-A (USBC-E2500 product information).
- Look up the exact laptop model and the specifications for its USB-C port; do not infer speed or charging support from the connector shape.
- Confirm that the adapter supports that host connection and that you are not using a slower port, hub, or connection elsewhere in the chain.
- If you need 2.5GbE, make sure the laptop-to-adapter connection can support the adapter’s data needs as well as the Ethernet side.
Choose between a standard adapter and charging pass-through
A standard USB-C Ethernet adapter adds a wired network connection. A pass-through model adds a charging path, but only if the laptop’s port supports USB Power Delivery and the charger, adapter, and laptop are suitable for that arrangement.

Standard adapter
Choose a standard model if you only need Ethernet or prefer to charge the laptop through its existing power connection. For example, Plugable’s USBC-E2500 is a 2.5GbE adapter based on the Realtek RTL8156B chipset; consult its product page for the current compatibility notes and setup guidance (USBC-E2500).
Adapter with pass-through charging
Plugable lists the USBC-E2500PD as a 2.5GbE adapter with up to 100W USB-C Power Delivery pass-through. That figure describes the product’s stated maximum, not a guarantee that a particular laptop will receive 100W. Check the laptop’s port and charging requirements, the adapter’s limits, and the charger’s output before relying on it (USBC-E2500PD product information).

Verify operating-system and driver support for the exact model
Compatibility can depend on the adapter’s chipset, operating-system version, and driver or kernel support. Do not assume that support for one USB-C adapter means support for every model. Plugable’s USBC-E2500 page lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS compatibility, with Linux described as basic unless a driver is installed or the kernel is updated. Review the product’s current instructions for the laptop’s exact operating system before buying (Plugable compatibility information).
The Realtek RTL8156B(S)G-CG specification describes a USB 3.0 controller supporting 10/100/1000/2.5G Ethernet and IEEE 802.3bz (Realtek RTL8156B(S)G-CG). Realtek organizes drivers by controller family and operating system on its USB Ethernet software page. Driver versions and dates change, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old version number.

Do not overbuy on cable category
Cable guidance depends on the speed and installation you are planning. Realtek says its RTL8156B controller supports high-speed transmission over CAT 5e UTP; Plugable recommends CAT 6a or CAT 7 for future compatibility with 5Gbps and 10Gbps Ethernet in its product listing (Plugable product comparison). These statements address different contexts and do not establish that every 2.5GbE setup requires a particular cable category. Check the cable and network equipment for your actual link and future plans.

A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the speed limit of your internet service and the Ethernet ports on your router, switch, or other wired devices.
- Check the exact laptop USB-C port’s data capabilities and confirm the adapter supports that host connection.
- Pick gigabit or 2.5GbE based on the slowest relevant part of the network path and your expected use.
- Look up the exact adapter model’s compatibility and installation instructions for your operating system.
- If you want charging pass-through, confirm USB Power Delivery support and compare the laptop, adapter, and charger requirements.
- Use cabling appropriate to the link and any faster network upgrades you plan; do not assume a cable category is universally required for 2.5GbE.
