Start by deciding what you want to do repeatedly: build a party and follow a story, win tactical battles, manage a faction or empire, or experiment with decks and short runs. Then use Steam tags and filters to narrow the catalog, compare a few finalists on the features you care about, and read recent reviews for evidence—not just a score. If you play on Steam Deck, check the game’s compatibility details before buying.
Choose the kind of turn-based experience you want
“Turn-based RPG” and “turn-based strategy” cover different loops, and many games blend them. Pick the activity you most want to spend time on before you search:
- Story-led RPG: build characters or a party, explore, make choices, and fight encounters as part of a larger narrative.
- Tactical strategy: position units, use terrain or abilities, and make decisions encounter by encounter or across a series of missions.
- Campaign or grand strategy: manage a faction, economy, logistics, diplomacy, or territory over a longer campaign.
- Deckbuilding or run-based play: assemble or improve a set of options and make decisions across repeatable runs.
- A hybrid: combine systems, such as RPG character progression with tactical battles.
These are practical ways to describe what you want, not an exhaustive Steam genre taxonomy. A game’s leading genre label may not capture its most distinctive mechanics.
Use Steam search and tags to build a shortlist
Search with a specific starting point
Begin with a recognizable phrase, then narrow the results rather than browsing a broad query on its own. Steam’s turn-based RPG search illustrates how a query can return a large and varied catalog; results, ranking, and counts can change over time.

Steam search can sort by relevance, release date, name, lowest or highest price, user reviews, and Steam Deck compatibility review date. Choose a sort that answers your immediate question: relevance for an initial scan, price to compare current listings, or user reviews when you want to inspect well-reviewed options.
Combine tags instead of relying on one label
Steam tags describe more than genre: they can cover mechanics and features, themes and moods, visuals or viewpoint, and player support. Combine a broad genre with features that matter to you—for example, tactical combat and single-player, or strategy and multiplayer—where those tags are available. Tags are a discovery aid, not a quality rating or a complete description. Developers, eligible players, and moderators can apply them; tag order and weight affect visibility and similarity matching, and a title’s tag profile can change. Steamworks requires at least five tags before launch and recommends up to twenty; only the top twenty are visible to users and used to influence store visibility. Check each game’s current store page, description, and gameplay footage to confirm that its actual loop matches the labels.
Compare finalists on the features that affect your play
Once you have a few candidates, compare them on the same criteria. Steam’s distinct tag categories are a useful reminder to look beyond genre alone.

| Player support | Does the game support solo play, co-op, or online versus? Check controller and language support, plus any launcher or account requirements that matter to you. |
| Cost and device fit | Check the current price in your region, edition and DLC requirements, system requirements, operating-system support, and compatibility with the device you plan to use. |
Use the store page to answer specific questions rather than assuming that every game in a genre handles them the same way. If a feature is essential—such as local or online multiplayer, a particular language, or a controller-friendly interface—verify it directly.
Read reviews for the evidence behind the score
Steam describes a game’s review score as “basically a categorization based on the percentage of positive reviews.” The score is a quick screening signal; it does not tell you whether the game suits your preferences. Read recent positive and negative reviews that address the qualities you care about. Look for concrete comments on tactical depth, story, pacing, difficulty curve, interface clarity, performance, multiplayer activity, or updates. Treat a review as evidence about that reviewer’s experience, not proof that every player will have the same one.

On Steam Deck
Check both the compatibility badge and the detailed compatibility section on the game’s Steam page. Valve’s Deck Verified program describes four possible statuses:

Valve explains the compatibility system in its Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide. Status applies to a specific title and can change. It is a compatibility signal, not a verdict on whether the game’s text, controls, interface, or session length suits you; a Playable game may still work well for your needs if its extra steps are acceptable.
On a desktop or laptop
Check the game’s current system requirements and supported operating systems before purchase. Steam Support notes that compatibility involves both hardware requirements and operating-system support. A game that fits the genre you want may still be a poor choice for a computer that does not meet its requirements.
Keep exploring without starting over
If your first search is too broad, refine it with Steam’s multi-select filters for tags, product type, Steamworks features, operating system, or language. Steam’s Discovery Update page describes personalized recommendations based on gameplay, curator reviews, and discovery tools. You can also wishlist a game to keep track of it, follow it for updates, or ignore it to remove it from recommendations and discovery surfaces.
Check current terms before you buy
Prices, discounts, review proportions, search results, release information, and compatibility statuses can change. Confirm the current regional listing and title-specific details when you are ready to buy. Do not assume that every game can be tried and returned: eligibility depends on Steam’s live terms and the circumstances of the purchase.
