Choose a throw by matching its feel, warmth, care instructions, and dimensions to how you plan to use it. There is no universally best fabric: wool, fleece, cotton, and blends involve different trade-offs, and the exact item’s label matters more than a general rule about its fiber.
Start with how you’ll use the throw
A blanket for keeping your legs warm on the sofa has different coverage needs from one you want to wrap around your shoulders. Decide whether you need a lap layer, shoulder coverage, or something broad enough to cover more of your body, then compare the listed width and length.
Throw sizes are not standardized across these examples. The Washington Post’s 2022 shopping guide describes 50 x 60 inches as a typical size and recommends checking dimensions (The Washington Post). Actual listings vary: Pendleton’s Falcon Cove throw is 50 x 70 inches, while Coyuchi’s Sequoia throw is 47 x 60 inches (Pendleton; Coyuchi). Utah State University Extension’s mitered-corner blanket pattern uses 48 x 48 inches for an adult lap throw; that is a pattern size, not a retail standard (Utah State University Extension).
Compare materials by feel, warmth, and upkeep
Feel is personal, and the available guidance does not establish a controlled softness or warmth ranking. The Washington Post’s general shopping guidance describes wool as especially warm, fleece as warm and soft with easier washing than wool, and cotton as durable and likely to soften with washing. These are broad descriptions, not measured guarantees for every weave, finish, blend, or person (The Washington Post).

- Enhanced Durability: Made with unmatched quality, this blanket features neat stitching that ensures a more robust connection at the seams for improved durability. Guaranteed to resist fading and shedding.
- Wool: Consider it if you want substantial warmth, but check the particular throw’s care instructions rather than assuming how it must be washed.
- Fleece: It may suit you if you want a soft-feeling, warm layer and prefer straightforward laundering; confirm the exact fiber content and care directions.
- Cotton: It is an option if you value durability and a fabric that can soften with washing, while the weave and label still determine the care routine.
- Blends: Read both the fiber percentages and the care label. A blend’s washing directions cannot be inferred reliably from one of its fibers alone.
Check the care label before buying
Look for the washing method, water temperature, drying instructions, and warnings such as bleach or ironing restrictions. The Federal Trade Commission’s Care Labeling Rule says, “The label must state whether the product should be washed by hand or machine.” That requirement applies to products covered by the rule; it is a reason to consult product-specific care information, not a claim that every throw is covered by this apparel provision (Federal Trade Commission, 16 CFR Part 423).

Make the choice that fits your routine
- Set your coverage target. Decide whether the throw is mainly for your lap, shoulders, or broader coverage, then compare the actual dimensions.
- Choose the feel and warmth you want. Use material descriptions as a starting point, not a promise of how a particular blanket will feel or perform.
- Confirm the laundry routine. If machine washing is important, verify that the specific item allows it and that its temperature, drying method, and restrictions work for you.
- Check the current product details. Fiber content, dimensions, instructions, and availability can vary by item and may change over time.
