The right tablet is the one that runs your essential apps, works with the exact pen you need, and suits the way you carry and use it. Start with your drawing and note-taking workflow—not a brand name—then compare screen size, multitasking support, accessories, and the complete setup cost.
Start with the apps and work you need to do
List the drawing apps, note-taking tools, PDF workflows, and productivity apps you actually plan to use. If one essential app requires iPadOS, Android, or Windows, that can narrow the choice before hardware comparisons begin. A Windows 2-in-1 may make sense when you need a desktop-class Windows application; otherwise, check that your preferred mobile apps support the tools and file workflows you rely on.
Also describe what “multitasking” means for you: switching between a reference image and a canvas, keeping notes beside a document, typing while reviewing files, or working across a tablet and external monitor. These tasks place different demands on the device. App availability and behavior can vary, so confirm support for your specific applications rather than assuming that a platform name guarantees a particular workflow.
Choose a screen size you can use—and carry
A larger display gives you more room for a canvas, handwriting, app panels, or side-by-side windows. It also means a larger device to carry, and the keyboard and cover add to the complete load. Consider where you will do most of your work: a desk-based tablet can prioritize workspace, while a device carried all day may call for a smaller screen and lighter accessories.

For a concrete example, Microsoft’s US-market Surface comparison describes its 12-inch model as more mobile and its 13-inch model as offering more workspace. The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at 1.5 lb (686 g), compared with 1.97 lb (895 g) for the 13-inch model; these are the starting weights Microsoft lists for the devices, not a complete carry weight with accessories. The comparison lists an LCD for the 12-inch and OLED or LCD HDR options for the 13-inch. Configurations differ in processors, memory, and storage, too. Before buying, picture a real task on the screen: a drawing canvas with the tool panels you use, or the two apps you most often need open together. Then factor in the keyboard, case, stand, and any display adapter you would take with you.

Match the stylus to the exact tablet generation
Do not treat “works with iPad,” “works with Galaxy Tab,” or a family name as enough to establish pen compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact tablet model and generation, then confirm which pen features your preferred app uses. Pressure, tilt, charging, storage, and replacement nibs matter only insofar as they fit your workflow and the specific pen.
Apple lists Pencil support by Pencil type and iPad model. For example, its compatibility page lists Apple Pencil Pro for iPad mini (A17 Pro), specified M2, M3, and M4 iPad Air sizes, and M4 and M5 iPad Pro sizes; Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports a different, broader set of models. For Samsung, confirm the exact Galaxy Tab model number, region, and seller configuration. Samsung’s US comparison can help identify displayed model specifications, but product bundles vary; do not assume an S Pen is included just because a tablet belongs to the Galaxy Tab family. For Surface, Microsoft identifies the Surface Slim Pen as a separate accessory. Check the pen’s compatibility, whether it is in the box, and its added cost before comparing tablet prices.
Check multitasking features on the model, not just the operating system
Windowing, split-screen work, and external-monitor support are not uniform across every tablet in a platform family. If your workflow depends on a larger workspace, find out whether the model supports extended desktop use with multiple app windows or only screen mirroring. Check the ports and whether your monitor connection needs an adapter.

Apple describes windowing in iPadOS 26, including Stage Manager and external-display use, but the supported experience depends on the iPad. Apple’s USB-C support documentation names model groups and resolutions for extended displays with multiple app windows, and notes that some displays require an adapter. Check Apple’s iPad external-display guidance for your model rather than inferring support from the iPadOS version alone.
For any shortlisted tablet, check the exact model’s app-window behavior, external-display capability, keyboard and trackpad options, and ports. If your work requires a monitor, verify the cable or adapter as part of the setup—not as an afterthought.

Compare the complete setup, not the tablet alone
The device price is only one part of the configuration. Add the compatible pen, keyboard or cover, stand, storage, and any hub or display adapter you need. A keyboard can make long writing sessions and window-based work easier, while a stand or case can provide a useful drawing angle; both also affect cost and portability. Current retail prices and bundle contents vary, so verify them with the local seller before buying.
Compare storage and connectivity on the exact configurations you are considering: internal capacity, cellular versus Wi-Fi, external storage support, and microSD expansion where applicable. Samsung’s live US comparison lists configurations and expandable-storage details across the Galaxy Tab models displayed. Surface configurations also differ by size. Microsoft lists the 12-inch Surface Pro with Snapdragon X Plus, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB or 512 GB UFS storage; the 13-inch configurations offer different processor, memory, and removable-SSD options. These are the configurations shown in Microsoft’s comparison, not a guarantee that every configuration is available in every region. Verify the listing for your market.
Read battery estimates in context
Manufacturer battery-life figures are estimates under stated test conditions, not promises of how long a tablet will last while drawing or multitasking. Microsoft’s 2025 Surface comparison lists up to 16 hours of local video playback and up to 12 hours of active web use for the 12-inch Surface Pro; for the 13-inch, it lists up to 14 hours of local video and up to 10 hours of active web use. These are Microsoft estimates, and actual results depend on conditions and use. Compare figures only when the test type is stated, and consult the current model listing for details.
