Choose a STEM enrichment program by matching its activities and commitment to what the student wants from it—not by its label or promises. Start with the student’s interests, age or year group, experience, and practical needs; then compare the program’s learning design, staff, support, cost, safety, and evidence of outcomes.
Which STEM program is right for your child?
First decide what the student hopes to gain. A program might be a good fit for one goal and a poor fit for another.
- Curiosity or career exposure: a science-centre visit, workplace experience, or university outreach activity can introduce unfamiliar settings and people.
- Regular hands-on learning: a weekly club can make space for creative STEM activities beyond the school curriculum.
- Deeper learning or a challenge: a competition or extended project may suit a student who wants to investigate a problem, develop an idea, or test their knowledge.
- Confidence or peer connection: look for a welcoming group, active participation, and support for beginners—not only advanced content or competitive results.
Ask the student what they would like to explore, what they enjoy doing, and how much time they want to commit. England’s Department for Education recommends aligning enrichment strategically and taking account of feedback from students, families, and staff. That principle is useful elsewhere too, although the guidance itself applies to England. England’s enrichment guidance explains that approach.
How do the main program formats differ?
The Australian Department of Education’s STEM initiative toolkit describes different purposes and evidence levels for several formats. These are ratings for initiative types, not guarantees about an individual provider or what one student will experience. In the toolkit, “unclear” means there is not enough evidence to conclude—not that the approach does not work. The toolkit overview also cautions that evidence is growing but incomplete.

| Format | Potential fit | Evidence label in the Australian toolkit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club or extracurricular activity | Regular, creative learning beyond the curriculum | Positive | Whether beginners feel welcome; the toolkit notes that these activities can attract students already engaged in STEM, see participation churn, and face cost barriers. |
| Competition | A defined challenge and a chance to stretch skills | Positive | Whether learning and participation matter alongside results, and whether the format suits the student’s confidence and interests. |
| Extended real-world project | Problem solving, collaboration, and creativity over time | Mixed | The time, guidance, resources, and coordination needed to complete the project. |
| Excursion or workplace visit | Curiosity and exposure to real STEM environments | Unclear | What students will do or learn beyond observing; the toolkit describes engagement as the primary aim rather than direct achievement. |
| Residential program | Immersion in a subject or field | Unclear | Total cost, fee support, length, supervision, and whether a less costly format could meet the same goal. |
The labels above come from an Australian government summary and should not be treated as a verdict on programs in other countries. The toolkit describes extracurricular activities and competitions as positive, extended real-world projects as mixed, and excursions and residential programs as unclear; it does not establish that every program in a category produces the same results. See the toolkit’s initiative descriptions and evidence ratings.
How can you compare programs?
Use the same questions for each option so that an engaging description does not distract from practical differences.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Student fit and aim | What does the student want to learn or explore? Is the program designed for their age or year group and starting level? |
| Learning design | Will students design, investigate, build, test, revise, or explain—or mostly watch demonstrations? Which STEM disciplines and real-world contexts are included? |
| Format and commitment | Is it a recurring club, one-off event, competition, extended project, workplace experience, or residential? How often and how long does it run? Is preparation expected? |
| People and support | Who leads and supervises sessions? What teaching and technical experience do they have? What support is available for different abilities, disabilities or SEND, language backgrounds, and confidence levels? |
| Access and total cost | What do fees cover? Include travel, materials, meals, equipment, and optional certificates. Are bursaries or transport help available? Does the schedule work for the student? |
| Safety and communication | Who supervises? What safeguarding policies and incident-reporting process apply? How will families and the school be kept informed? |
| Outcomes and evidence | What outcomes does the provider intend? How does it assess attendance, participation, learning, confidence, or progression? Is there evidence about this specific program and similar students? |
For an out-of-school program, check supervision and safeguarding directly with the provider and confirm which local requirements apply. England’s parent guidance covers after-school and holiday clubs, private tuition, and other out-of-school settings; it was updated on 6 February 2026 to reflect changes to DBS advice. It is England-specific, not a universal safeguarding standard. Read the England guidance for parents and carers.

What should you ask a provider?
Ask for concrete details before enrolling. A provider’s stated aims are useful, but marketing claims alone do not show that a program has achieved them.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- What will students actually do in a typical session, and what will they make, investigate, or explain?
- What prior knowledge is expected? Can the program stretch a student without requiring a narrow academic profile?
- Who teaches and supervises? What relevant experience do staff or volunteers have, and how are safeguarding concerns handled?
- How does the program support students with different learning needs, disabilities, confidence levels, or language backgrounds?
- What is the complete cost, including transport, materials, meals, and optional award fees? Are bursaries available?
- What outcomes does the program aim to achieve, and how does it collect and use feedback or participation data?
- Can the provider share evidence about this specific program: who took part, how outcomes were measured, and what the evaluation could not establish?
- What happens if the student misses a session or decides the subject is not for them?
How should you judge evidence of impact?
Look for a clear link between the program’s intended outcomes and the way it evaluates them. For example, a program aiming to improve confidence should explain how it gathers feedback about confidence, rather than relying only on attendance or a final showcase.
The Australian Department of Education’s evaluation guidance sets out six steps: decide the purpose of evaluation; choose who is involved; build a framework; gather evidence; draw conclusions; and make decisions and share results. It notes that educational impacts can take time to emerge and that establishing causation is difficult. A provider’s results should therefore be read in context: who participated, how outcomes were measured, and what other factors may have contributed. Read the Australian toolkit’s evaluation guidance.

Evidence about a format—such as clubs or competitions—is not proof that every provider using that format is effective. Prefer specific, relevant information over broad claims, and ask what the provider learned from feedback or evaluation and what it changed as a result.
How can you check access and affordability?
Calculate the total commitment, not just the advertised fee. Include travel, materials, equipment, food, and optional certificates, as well as the time needed for preparation and attendance. Ask about bursaries, accessible venues, learning support, and what happens if the student cannot attend a session.

Consider who can realistically take part. The Australian toolkit warns that extracurricular programs may attract students already engaged in STEM and those with more parent support, while costs can exclude some students. A good match should be accessible to this student, not merely well regarded in general.

Where can you find programs and activities?
Availability and safeguarding rules depend on location. In England, the Department for Education points to several sources; elsewhere, start with the school, a local university outreach team or public science centre, established STEM education nonprofits, and official education department directories.
England: search for opportunities
Neon is a free EngineeringUK platform that schools can use to search opportunities by location, education level, age, type, cost, duration, and relevant accreditations. Its listings include quality-assurance criteria, but check current details directly with the provider.
England: find activities and project resources
STEM Learning is a not-for-profit source of free secondary and post-16 resources, club guidance, challenges, and STEM Ambassadors. The Department for Education resource page published on 15 June 2026 reported a network of over 26,000 STEM Ambassadors; that is a network-size figure, not a measure of program impact.
