Choose a Spanish-learning app by checking whether it can place you at an appropriate starting level, how far its documented course goes, and whether its lesson format fits the time you can reliably spend. Babbel, Busuu, and Duolingo describe different placement tools, course ranges, and practice formats; those provider descriptions do not establish how quickly you will progress.

Start with your current Spanish level

If you already know some Spanish, take a placement assessment rather than automatically starting at the first lesson. Before committing, check whether you can change the recommended level or retake the test: a placement result is useful only if the course can be adjusted when it feels too easy or too difficult.

Babbel

Babbel says Spanish learners can take a placement quiz, change courses, or take the quiz again. See Babbel’s placement-quiz instructions.

Busuu

Busuu says its placement test takes five minutes and suggests a level. It does not mark earlier lessons as completed, so a learner placed above the beginning may still need to work through those lessons. Details are in Busuu’s placement-test guide.

Compare the documented course range

Course labels and platform scores can help you see how much material a provider says it offers, but they are not interchangeable independent proficiency certifications. Use the stated range as a course-planning signal, not proof that completing the app will certify your Spanish.

App Published Spanish course scope What to keep in mind
Babbel A1 to C1; Spanish for Mexico and Spanish for Spain, according to Babbel’s Spanish course page. Check which variety you want to learn and choose the corresponding course.
Busuu Spanish certificates cover A1 to C1, according to Busuu’s certificate guide. Certificates are available to Premium learners; certificates are a provider feature, not independent proof of proficiency.
Duolingo The most advanced content in its most developed, score-aligned courses reaches B2, according to Duolingo’s score explainer. Duolingo describes its score as a progress guide aligned to CEFR descriptions, not as a separately administered CEFR exam.

Match lesson cadence to your actual schedule

Choose a format you can repeat on ordinary days, not one that depends on an ideal study routine. Babbel says a typical lesson takes about six minutes to finish in its method description. Duolingo promotes Spanish study in five minutes a day and describes its lessons as bite-sized on its Spanish course page. These are descriptions of lesson format, not evidence that five or six minutes a day will produce a particular level or timeline.

  • If you have only a short, predictable break, try a sample lesson and see whether its format works for that window.
  • If your schedule varies, check whether the app lets you resume comfortably after missed days rather than relying on an unbroken streak.
  • If you can study longer, consider whether the app offers practice beyond its short core lessons, especially listening or speaking work.

Choose the practice you need, not just the shortest lesson

Consider what you need to do with Spanish. If you mainly want structured course material, review lesson goals and progression. If you need to practise speaking, verify that the app includes a format you will actually use and that it is available on your device and account.

Busuu describes Spanish Conversations in its course timeline, with scenarios labeled by required CEFR level and generative-AI practice. Its Conversations help page explains the feature; check the current app to confirm availability and whether the interaction meets your speaking needs. A listed conversation feature should not be assumed to provide the same experience as speaking with a person.

Can an app promise a path to fluency?

The provider information cited here does not establish how long a typical learner takes to reach a particular Spanish level with any of these apps. Do not treat “five minutes a day,” a course level label, or an app score as a promise to become fluent within a set number of days. Progress depends on more than the app’s stated lesson length, and no comparable independent time-to-proficiency result is established by these sources.
