If you prefer a colorful AMOLED display, check the specific watch’s brightness, text-size, always-on, and wake settings before choosing it. The right face also matters: make the time and the one or two outdoor values you rely on easy to spot.
Start with the display technology
Transflective MIP for direct sunlight
Garmin describes its Chroma display as using reflected ambient light and natural sunlight as primary light sources. Garmin’s Instinct 2X Solar specifications identify its screen as monochrome, sunlight-visible, and transflective MIP. That makes it a concrete example to consider if you often check your watch in direct sun and want information visible at a glance.
Garmin’s explanation is a manufacturer statement about its display technology, not an independent comparison or a guarantee about every MIP screen. It should not be read as proof that all MIP watches are equally legible in all conditions.
AMOLED for color, with model-specific checks
AMOLED may suit you if colorful presentation is important or you move between indoor and outdoor settings. Do not assume that every AMOLED watch behaves the same outdoors: check the exact model’s brightness controls, text-size options, always-on behavior, and how the screen wakes. Garmin’s comparison pages include both AMOLED and MIP watches, reinforcing that the choice is model-specific rather than a universal ranking.

Choose a face that makes essential information easy to find
For exercise, navigation, or a quick glance in sun, prioritize the time and the metric you use most. Avoid crowding the face with secondary data that makes key values harder to pick out. Increase text size if the watch supports it. Garmin’s Forerunner 570 manual documents text-size and brightness settings, but the available sources do not establish a universally best layout, font size, or number of fields.
Check always-on and wake behavior
“Always On” does not necessarily mean the watch face stays at full brightness. Garmin’s Forerunner 570 manual says its Always On setting keeps face data visible while reducing brightness and the background. The manual also says the setting affects battery and display life. Check the documentation for the particular model you are considering; do not transfer one watch’s battery guidance to another.

On Apple Watch, Apple documents brightness, text size, and Bold Text controls. Apple also says Always On is unavailable in Low Power Mode. These controls and trade-offs are specific to the watch and its software settings, so confirm how the model you own or plan to buy behaves.
Compare watches using the same practical checks

Match the choice to how you use the watch
- Frequent direct sun and instant glances: Consider a sunlight-visible transflective MIP model, such as the Garmin Instinct 2X Solar. Its official specification identifies the display type; it is an example, not a claim that it is the best choice for everyone.
- Colorful presentation and mixed indoor/outdoor use: Consider AMOLED, then verify outdoor brightness, text size, always-on behavior, and wake settings for the exact model.
- Workout data or navigation: Put the one or two values you check most prominently on the face and enlarge text if supported.
- Battery-sensitive use: Review the model’s Always On and brightness guidance before relying on persistent face data.
- Apple Watch: Try the brightness, text-size, and Bold Text controls in Display & Brightness, and account for Always On being unavailable in Low Power Mode.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer specifications and support materials establish display features and documented controls, but they do not provide controlled, cross-brand testing of outdoor legibility. No universal winner between AMOLED and MIP, brightness measurement, or quantified improvement is established here. Check the current regional model listing and software documentation for the watch you intend to use.
