For Apple Home, choose between a HomePod and an Apple TV based on what you want in the room, then check whether your planned accessories use Thread. HomePod mini is a natural fit if you also want a compact smart speaker; Apple TV makes sense if you want a streaming device. For Thread-based Matter accessories, Apple identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hub examples.

What an Apple Home hub does

Apple says a home hub lets you control smart-home accessories while away, share control with other people, and automate accessories. HomePod mini and HomePod become home hubs automatically when set up. Apple TV can also be set up as a hub in its settings; Apple says only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to the Home app for this purpose. Apple’s home hub setup guide explains these roles.

Choose by the device you want at home

Choose HomePod mini if you want a smart speaker

HomePod mini combines a compact speaker and Siri functions with Apple Home hub features. Apple lists it as a Thread-enabled home hub for Thread Matter accessories. HomePod is also an Apple Home hub when set up, but Apple’s cited Thread guidance names HomePod mini as its example.

Choose Apple TV if you want a streaming device

Apple TV can serve as a home hub as well as a streaming device. If you need Thread support, pay attention to the exact configuration: Apple’s named example is Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. Do not assume that every Apple TV 4K configuration has the same Thread capability.

Check your accessories’ connection type

Matter and Thread are not interchangeable terms. Matter is an interoperability standard; a Matter accessory may use Thread or another connection type. Apple’s guidance says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app, while Thread-based Matter accessories specifically require a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. Apple’s developer compatibility guidance describes different requirements for non-Thread accessories, so check the individual accessory’s stated protocol and Apple’s current compatibility details before buying.

Apple’s Matter and Thread setup guidance identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hub examples. Apple’s Home developer compatibility information provides further context for accessory requirements.

Do not mistake a Thread border router for a complete Apple Home hub

A Thread border router is a networking component. Apple says a supported third-party border router can satisfy a Thread requirement in some listed configurations, but its guidance separately describes setting up Apple TV or HomePod for the Apple Home hub role. The cited guidance does not establish that a third-party border router by itself provides all Apple Home hub functions, such as remote control, sharing, and automations.

A practical decision checklist

  • Decide whether you want a smart speaker or a TV streaming device in the room.
  • Check whether each planned accessory uses Thread, another Matter connection type, or a different protocol.
  • If you need Thread for Matter accessories, verify that the specific Apple device configuration is listed as Thread-enabled.
  • If you need control away from home, shared access, or automations, set up an Apple Home hub using Apple’s current instructions.

Apple’s published guidance establishes the devices’ stated roles and compatibility requirements, but it does not provide a head-to-head performance benchmark or price comparison. Compatibility for an individual third-party accessory depends on that model’s specifications and Apple’s current support information.
