Choose a self-hosted Jira and Confluence alternative by matching it to your team’s work-tracking and documentation workflows, deployment boundary, governance requirements, and migration needs—not by feature count alone. First decide whether you want one product with a built-in wiki or project management connected to a separate documentation platform. Then verify edition limits, operating requirements, and migration fidelity with a representative pilot.
Decide what “alternative to Jira and Confluence” needs to replace
Jira and Confluence serve related but distinct jobs: work tracking and collaborative documentation. A replacement can combine those jobs in one product, or use a project-management platform alongside a dedicated wiki. Neither architecture is automatically better; the right choice depends on how closely your team needs work items, project plans, and reference documentation to connect.
- Choose a combined product if people need a shared place for work items and project knowledge and a built-in wiki fits your documentation habits.
- Choose connected products if documentation needs its own authoring, information architecture, or permissions model, or if your organization already uses a wiki or content platform.
For example, Plane describes a built-in wiki alongside projects and work items. OpenProject describes an XWiki integration for collaborative documentation and knowledge management, as well as a Nextcloud Hub integration. Those are different architectural approaches, not proof that either product reproduces every Jira or Confluence workflow. Plane’s self-hosting page and OpenProject’s feature and pricing comparison describe the respective options.
Compare the shortlist against your requirements
These two candidates have first-party documentation in the areas covered here. Treat vendor-described capabilities as items to verify against the edition and deployment you would actually run.

| Candidate | Work and documentation model | Deployment and edition points to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Plane | Vendor describes a work hierarchy, projects, work items, intake, and a built-in wiki. | Vendor describes an air-gapped commercial option using signed offline bundles, license-file activation, internal image cloning, and offline updates. Infrastructure requirements vary by deployment and workload. If using AI, the vendor says the deployment adds OpenSearch, a dedicated database, and separate services. Confirm edition, support, and target-environment requirements with Plane’s self-hosting documentation. |
| OpenProject | Project management can be paired with XWiki for collaborative documentation and knowledge management; the feature page also lists Nextcloud Hub integration. | OpenProject documents a free on-premises Community edition and a paid Enterprise on-premises edition with add-ons and professional support. Its pricing page says Nextcloud integration is part of Community; OpenID Connect SSO is an Enterprise add-on subject to the Corporate-plan condition stated there. Check the live matrix for your exact hosting mode and requirements: installation and operations guide and feature and pricing comparison. |
Redmine, Taiga, Leantime, YouTrack, XWiki, Wiki.js, and BookStack are names to investigate if you want a broader search, but the available first-party evidence here does not establish their current feature sets, release status, license terms, or fit for a Jira-and-Confluence migration. Treat them as leads for your own verification rather than as recommendations. The names appear in a Plane comparison article and a search overview.
Use a requirements matrix before evaluating features
Write down what the team actually uses today, then record whether each candidate supports it in the edition and hosting model under consideration. This prevents a broad feature list from hiding a missing requirement or an upgrade to a higher tier.

- Work management: issue or work-item hierarchy, Agile boards and cycles, reporting, intake, and the workflow rules your teams depend on.
- Documentation: built-in or separate wiki, page structure, permissions, search, versioning, and whether existing Confluence authoring patterns can be retained.
- Deployment boundary: supported installation methods, outbound network requirements, air-gapped operation, data and backup locations, and update process.
- Governance and identity: SSO protocols such as OIDC or SAML, audit requirements, roles and permissions, support commitments, and the edition that includes each item.
- Operations and resilience: workload sizing, database and storage architecture, backup and restore, upgrades, monitoring, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Ecosystem and cost: integrations, replacements for Marketplace apps, implementation and migration effort, infrastructure, support, backup costs, and ongoing staff time.
For governance features in particular, check the vendor’s current edition matrix rather than relying on a product name or an old comparison. For costs, use current quotes for your region, user count, and hosting mode; include operations and migration work alongside any license or support charge.
Assess self-hosting as an operating commitment
Self-hosting changes who operates the service; it does not remove operational work. Before selecting a product, assign ownership for installation, upgrades, backups, monitoring, sizing, and recovery. OpenProject’s installation and operations guide covers operational topics, while Plane says infrastructure needs depend on deployment and workload.

Make availability a concrete requirement. Atlassian’s Data Center documentation distinguishes a single-node installation from a cluster: clustering needs specialized components such as a load balancer, while Atlassian says a single node cannot support high availability or disaster-recovery strategies. Use this as an operations comparison point, not as evidence that another product offers equivalent architecture or guarantees. See Atlassian’s Data Center architecture documentation.
- If a service interruption can stop critical work, define recovery time, recovery point, and failover expectations before sizing infrastructure.
- If the environment is isolated from the public internet, verify how installation, licensing, images, security updates, and upgrades work offline.
- If your team cannot own routine maintenance and recovery, include vendor support or implementation assistance in the evaluation rather than treating self-hosting as a software-only decision.
Validate migration before planning a cutover
A published migration guide establishes that a guide exists; it does not establish that your particular data and configuration will transfer with the fidelity you need. OpenProject lists a Jira migration guide in its operations documentation, but the compatibility of a specific Jira and Confluence estate—including custom workflows, Marketplace apps, permissions, attachments, integrations, and data volume—must be assessed for that estate.

- Inventory the source: record Jira and Confluence versions, projects and spaces, workflow customizations, apps, permissions, integrations, attachments, and data volume.
- Map essential workflows: identify which behaviors must be preserved, which can change, and who will approve the mapping.
- Run a representative pilot: migrate a sample that includes ordinary and edge-case projects, documentation, attachments, permissions, and integrations.
- Check the result with users: verify content, search, access, relationships, and day-to-day workflows in the destination before deciding on a cutover plan.
Ask the vendor or an implementation partner for an inventory-based assessment when migration is a deciding factor. Set the cutover plan only after the pilot exposes what transfers cleanly and what needs rebuilding or manual handling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the decision in this order
- Choose the architecture: one tool with a built-in wiki, or project management connected to a dedicated documentation platform.
- Rank must-haves: separate hard requirements from preferences across workflows, identity, governance, deployment, and resilience.
- Check edition gates: confirm each must-have in the current feature matrix and get written clarification for ambiguous plan or hosting restrictions.
- Estimate the operating model: include implementation, infrastructure, backups, upgrades, monitoring, support, and staff time.
- Pilot both the product and migration: use representative workflows and data, then evaluate the results with the teams who will use and operate the system.
That sequence narrows the field without confusing “self-hosted” with “equivalent to Jira and Confluence.” Select the candidate that meets your real workflow and governance needs and can be operated and migrated with acceptable risk.
