Choose an AI agent for computer use by checking how tightly you can limit its access, how it handles untrusted content, and whether it asks you to approve consequential actions. No agent is risk-free: the goal is to keep a misled or malfunctioning agent from doing more than the task requires.

Why computer-use agents need different security checks

An AI agent can turn model output into actions through tools: browsing, clicking, typing, downloading, or working inside applications. That creates risks beyond an incorrect answer. NIST notes that agents can plan and take autonomous actions affecting real-world systems, and identifies risks including adversarial data, insecure or poisoned models, and harmful actions that can occur without an attacker. See NIST’s January 12, 2026 announcement.

One important threat is prompt injection. A webpage, email, document, image, or application interface can contain instructions intended to redirect the agent. Treat content the agent encounters as untrusted, even when it appears relevant to your task. In a computer-use workflow, the danger depends partly on what the agent is allowed to do with that content: a misleading instruction is more consequential if the agent can send mail, alter files, or submit forms without review.

Prompt injection is not the only concern. Ordinary software vulnerabilities, data poisoning, and an agent pursuing a poorly specified objective can also lead to harmful behavior. A sensible choice therefore combines conventional security measures with controls designed for model-driven actions.

Assess a candidate against these security controls

Control What to look for Why it matters
Permission scope Access limited to needed tools, files, accounts, and resources; separate read and write permissions where possible. Reducing access limits what a successful manipulation or mistake can affect.
Isolation and communications A sandbox or restricted environment, plus controls that block, detect, or surface unexpected access or network communication for your approval. An agent should not freely reach unrelated resources just because it can use a computer.
Action approval A preview that identifies the action and target, followed by confirmation before sending, purchasing, submitting, or modifying. You need a chance to catch a wrong recipient, target, or data change before it happens.
Prompt-injection defenses Documented defenses that apply to the exact product and integration you will use, not just a different tool or API. Security features may vary across integrations, even when they use the same model or brand.
Monitoring and privacy An action history you can inspect, and clear information about what content, screenshots, and connected data are retained and who can access them. Logs can help explain unexpected behavior; retention and access determine what information persists beyond the task.
Task fit The agent can complete your workflow without unnecessary access; capabilities such as email or downloads can be withheld until needed. A powerful tool is not a good fit if the task requires only a narrow capability.

OpenAI recommends limiting access to the data required for a task and giving explicit, narrow instructions rather than broad discretion. Its agent safety guidance is a useful baseline: define the task and grant only the access needed to do it.

Choose an agent by starting with the task

  1. List the minimum access required. Write down the specific files, accounts, websites, and actions the task needs. Prefer an agent that lets you grant access to those resources rather than broad access to your computer or accounts. Separate read access from permission to change or send data wherever possible.
  2. Identify actions that could expose data or affect others. Check how the agent handles sending a message, submitting a form, making a purchase, or modifying information. The confirmation should make the action and its target clear, including the recipient and information involved when relevant.
  3. Check what happens when outside content gives instructions. Ask whether safeguards apply to webpages, email, documents, and interfaces the agent processes. Favor controls beyond the model’s ability to recognize malicious text, such as restricted tools, isolation, communication checks, approval gates, logging, and a way to stop the task.
  4. Verify visibility and data handling. Find out whether you can review the agent’s actions and what it stores, including screenshots and connected data. A security or privacy label alone does not establish retention periods, access, or coverage across integrations.
  5. Test with minimal privileges first. Start logged out or in a minimally connected mode when the task does not require an account. Add one capability at a time only when necessary, and stop if the agent requests access unrelated to the task.

Make approvals meaningful, not automatic

A confirmation prompt helps only if you can understand what you are approving. Before a consequential or irreversible action, the interface should show what will happen and where: for example, the recipient of a message, the form being submitted, or the record being changed. Avoid treating a generic “Continue?” prompt as adequate authorization.

OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends authorization and approval checks for the specific action. Its example guidance also says unknown tools should fail closed. Anthropic recommends human confirmation before irreversible actions in its computer-use documentation. Prefer designs where approval is tied to the particular operation rather than a blanket permission that lets the agent proceed with later actions.

Check that protections cover your exact integration

Do not assume a vendor’s security feature applies to every way of using its model. Anthropic says classifiers run automatically with its official computer_20251124 API tool, but not with custom computer-use tools. That distinction is described in its computer-use documentation. If you use a third-party app or a custom integration, check what protections that implementation actually provides.

Detection is one layer, not a guarantee. Even a classifier or prompt-injection defense cannot substitute for narrow permissions, review of consequential actions, and a way to interrupt the agent. OpenAI’s March 11, 2026 article, “Designing AI agents to resist prompt injection,” reports an example attack from external security researchers that worked 50% of the time in a particular test using an email-research prompt. That is a result for that reported example, not a general success rate for attacks on agents or a forecast for your task.

What you can—and cannot—conclude about safety

There is no established, universally safest consumer computer-use agent or independent current head-to-head ranking in the cited guidance. Vendor pages describe their own systems; their feature claims are not independent comparative tests and can change. Compare concrete controls in the product, plan, region, and integration you intend to use rather than relying on a brand-level security claim.
