Choose a local model runtime by matching the exact model file and quantization to your computer’s CPU, GPU, or NPU, then decide whether you want an app, command line, or local API. A model being quantized—or stored as GGUF—does not by itself guarantee that a particular runtime can use it with your chosen accelerator, context size, or features.

Start with the model file and your computer

Before installing a runtime, identify the model artifact you intend to use. Check its file format, quantization type, and architecture, then check your operating system and the hardware path you want to use. Finally, consider the context size and whether you need a desktop interface, command-line control, or a server endpoint.

  • Model artifact: Is the model already in GGUF, and does the runtime support that file and architecture?
  • Quantization: Which quantization is the file actually using? “Quantized” is not one universal format or compatibility guarantee.
  • Hardware: Do you plan to use the CPU, a specific GPU backend, or an NPU?
  • Memory and context: Can the computer handle the model and the context size you intend to use? Check on the target machine rather than relying on a generic estimate.
  • Workflow: Do you need an app, CLI, local API, or integration with other developer tools?

Understand GGUF and quantization compatibility

GGUF is the model format llama.cpp requires. Its README says other model formats can be converted using project scripts, but that does not mean every model can or should be converted for every workflow. Confirm that conversion is supported for your source model and that the resulting artifact is appropriate before choosing a runtime. The llama.cpp README documents integer quantization options from 1.5-bit through 8-bit; actual support and validation depend on the backend and model combination.

Keep three questions separate: whether the runtime can read the file format, whether it supports that quantization and architecture, and whether it can run them on your intended device. A “yes” to one does not establish the others.

Choose a workflow, not a supposed speed winner

Option Useful when What to verify
llama.cpp You want direct GGUF handling, command-line control, or a server workflow. The project documents CLI use with a local GGUF path or a Hugging Face model reference, as well as an OpenAI-compatible server route. Confirm that your exact model and selected backend are supported. The project’s documented capabilities do not guarantee every model/backend combination.
LM Studio You prefer an application-oriented workflow with CLI, local API, SDK, or developer tools available in its documentation. Its official documentation search result describes running llama.cpp (GGUF) or MLX models. Check current documentation for your specific model and hardware. The available documentation description does not establish detailed compatibility or performance for every combination.

These are workflow distinctions, not a performance ranking. The llama.cpp project describes its goal as enabling “LLM inference with minimal setup and state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of hardware – locally and in the cloud.” That is the project’s own characterization, not independent comparative evidence. No controlled, current comparison establishes which runtime is faster across different models, quantizations, hardware, and context settings.

Check the hardware backend you will actually use

llama.cpp documents CPU and Apple Silicon optimizations, x86 CPU instruction sets, and CUDA, HIP, MUSA, Vulkan, and SYCL backends, as well as partial CPU/GPU hybrid inference. These are documented options, not a guarantee that every device or model is supported equally. Check the project documentation for the backend and model you plan to use.

Intel OpenVINO within llama.cpp

The OpenVINO backend documentation lists Intel CPUs, integrated and discrete Intel GPUs, and Intel NPUs. It lists FP16, BF16 for Intel Xeon, and several quantization types. The guide says accuracy validation and performance optimizations for quantized models are works in progress; its validated-model configuration used llama-cli with Q4_K_M on an Intel Core Ultra Series 2 system. That configuration describes the guide’s validation, not a general benchmark or a guarantee for other Intel devices and models. See the llama.cpp OpenVINO backend documentation.

OpenVINO coverage is not uniform across tools and devices: the implementation supports a subset of GGML operations and text-only models, while multimodal support is a work in progress. The guide also warns that its default context can be very large and may reduce performance on edge or laptop devices; it suggests reducing context as a mitigation. Check the context and features you need rather than assuming this backend-specific caution applies identically to every runtime.

Try the intended workload before settling on a runtime

  1. Confirm the artifact: Use the exact model file, architecture, and quantization you intend to run. If it is not GGUF, verify that conversion is supported and suitable.
  2. Select the intended device path: Choose the CPU, GPU backend, or NPU you expect to use, and confirm that the runtime recognizes it.
  3. Set the intended context: Test with the context size your real workload requires, not just a smaller configuration that may behave differently.
  4. Run a representative prompt: Use the kind of input and features you expect in practice, including any server or API workflow you require.
  5. Check actual device use: Verify that inference is using the intended accelerator rather than silently relying on another path.

This trial is the practical way to judge performance on your own computer: the available documentation does not provide a controlled cross-runtime ranking for your exact setup.
