Then check the physical details—height, thresholds, and obstacle handling—that determine whether it can reach and clean the rooms you have. A high suction figure or long feature list alone does not establish that a model will suit your home.
What robot vacuum works for pet hair, rugs, and multiple floors?
The right model depends on the messes and obstacles in your home, not on a universal ranking. A useful starting point is to write down your floor mix, rug types, pet-hair length and volume, number of levels, and any narrow clearances or thresholds. For example, one first-time buyer described a home as “50% carpet / 50% LVP,” with “2 dogs (1 long haired),” “1 area rug,” and a “1/4″ door threshold.” That combination illustrates why a single headline specification cannot answer the whole buying question.
Use the following criteria to narrow candidates, then verify every feature on the exact model and in the market where you intend to buy it. Manufacturer product pages describe claimed specifications; they are not, by themselves, independent proof of cleaning performance.
How should you compare robot vacuums for pet hair?
Check the main brush and hair-wrap evidence
For carpet, brush construction matters because the brush has to work with the floorhead to loosen and collect debris. Vacuum Wars’ 2026 robot vacuum buyer guide recommends a bristled main brush for carpet agitation and a proven anti-tangle design when long hair is a concern. Look for model-specific evidence or clear product details about the brush; a generic “anti-tangle” label does not establish how it performs with your pet’s hair.

- THOROUGH EDGE AND CORNER CLEANING — An extended mop pad and edge-sweeping brush work together to clean along baseboards and into corners other robots miss.
Estimate bin capacity and emptying work
Pet hair can fill a small onboard bin quickly. Vacuum Wars recommends a bin of about 300 mL or more, or an auto-empty dock, for homes with pets and carpet. Treat that as a buying-guide recommendation, not a guarantee: how often the bin fills depends on the home and use. Auto-emptying can reduce routine handling, but large clumps may still need occasional manual attention.
Consider pet-related obstacles
If a pet accident is a realistic possibility, obstacle avoidance is more than a convenience. Check which sensors the exact model uses and look for model-specific results around the kinds of hazards present in your home. Clear cords, toys, and other loose objects where possible; use no-go areas for persistent problem spots rather than assuming a robot will identify every hazard.

How do you make sure it cleans your rugs without wetting them?
For vacuuming, verify carpet pickup and detection
Look for credible pickup results on flooring similar to yours and confirm whether the model detects carpet or increases suction on it. A manufacturer’s carpet-boost claim is useful feature information, but it is not independent evidence that the robot will pick up hair from your particular rug pile.
For vacuum-mop models, compare lifting with pad removal
These are different approaches to keeping wet pads away from carpet. Some robots lift the pads over thinner rugs; some return to the dock and remove the pads for thicker carpet. Measure or identify the pile of rugs the robot must cross, then check whether the exact model’s stated behavior suits that pile. Very plush rugs may still need a no-mop zone.

- PERFECT FOR HOMES WITH PETS: With powerful vacuum suction, Shark’s self-cleaning brushroll, and HEPA filtration system the robot captures pet hair, dust, dander and allergens with ease.
For a concrete example of a model-specific claim, TP-Link says its US-market Tapo RV50 Pro Omni raises its wet pads 0.47 inches over thinner rugs and removes both mop pads at the dock for thick carpet. The 0.47-inch figure is the manufacturer’s specification for this model, not an independent measurement or a general standard for robot mops.
What should you check for a home with multiple floors?
Confirm that it saves separate maps
Multi-room mapping does not necessarily mean multi-floor mapping. Check the exact model’s manual or product information for explicit support for saving maps for separate levels, and confirm that the app’s room and no-go controls work with those maps.

- HIGH SUCTION POWER & SONIC MOPPING: Ultra-powerful, whole-home cleaning on carpets and hard floors with strong suction that lifts dirt and debris, while sonic mopping scrubs hard floors for a deeper clean—all in one pass.
- NO SPOTS MISSED: With Matrix Clean technology, the robot cleans in a precision matrix grid, taking multiple passes over dirt and debris to deliver 30% better carpet cleaning (vs. RV2610WD single pass, tested on level loop sand).
- PERFECT FOR HOMES WITH PETS: The self-cleaning brushroll captures pet hair, dust, and debris while preventing hair wrap, helping maintain strong pickup performance across carpets and hard floors in homes with pets.
- TACKLE STUCK-ON STAINS: Sonic mopping scrubs hard floors 100x per minute, and for deeper cleaning, use Matrix Mop in the app to target zones and deliver 50% better stain cleaning (vs. RV2001WD, modified IEC 62885-6).
- SELF-EMPTYING & SELF-CHARGING: Holds up to 60 days of dirt and debris in a bagless base with no replacement bags required. With Recharge and Resume, the robot automatically recharges when low and picks up cleaning right where it left off.
Feature examples include iRobot’s US product information for the Roomba Plus 504 Vac, which describes 3D maps of multiple floors, and TP-Link’s Tapo RV50 Pro Omni page, which says it saves separate maps for each level. These examples show that multi-floor mapping is available on particular products; they do not establish that every model has it or that setup works the same way across brands.
Plan for moving the robot between levels
If one dock stays on one floor, expect to move the robot between levels unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model say otherwise. Verify how to select a saved map and relocate the robot. Do not assume it can travel between floors on its own: mapping and anti-drop sensors are not stair-climbing capabilities.

How do furniture clearance, thresholds, and obstacles affect the choice?
- Furniture: Measure the clearance under furniture the robot needs to clean, then compare it with the robot’s stated height.
- Thresholds: Compare your transitions with model-specific crossing results. Distinguish a single vertical step from a tiered transition when interpreting a maximum threshold claim.
- Loose objects: Check for dedicated obstacle-avoidance hardware and evidence involving cords, socks, shoes, or toys similar to what is on your floors. A broad “AI obstacle avoidance” label does not identify the sensors or establish how well the system works.
- Persistent hazards: Clear clutter when possible and set no-go areas where an obstacle reliably causes trouble.
A robot cannot clean a room it cannot physically reach. Treat height and thresholds as practical fit checks, not minor specifications to review after choosing a model.
Which specifications are worth comparing between finalists?
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Pet-hair pickup | Results on carpet like yours and evidence about hair wrapping, especially for long hair. |
| Routine maintenance | Onboard-bin capacity or auto-empty behavior, weighed against how often you are willing to empty or clean it. |
| Carpet and rugs | Carpet detection or boost; for a vacuum-mop, rug-specific pad lift or removal behavior that matches your rug pile. |
| Multiple floors | Explicit support for separate saved maps and usable room and no-go controls on each level. |
| Obstacles | Sensor details and model-specific performance around household clutter relevant to your rooms. |
| Physical access | Robot height versus furniture clearance, and crossing results versus your thresholds and rug edges. |
| Dock and mop upkeep | For models with automated mopping, consider the extra dock functions and maintenance as well as the vacuuming features. |
Do not rank finalists by suction numbers alone. Vacuum Wars cautions that Pascal ratings are not always comparable across brands and do not show how effectively a brush and floorhead deliver suction to carpet or hard floors. The same guide says an “AI obstacle avoidance” label does not tell buyers which sensors are present or how well they work. Treat those figures and labels as starting points for questions, not as substitutes for relevant performance evidence.
How can you make the final choice?
- List your recurring conditions: pet-hair length and volume, hard-floor and carpet mix, rug pile, number of levels, and household clutter.
- Remove poor physical fits: compare robot height with furniture clearance and model-specific crossing results with thresholds and rug edges.
- Check pet upkeep: compare brush design, hair-wrap evidence, bin size, and auto-empty behavior.
- Check carpet and mop behavior: look for relevant pickup evidence and confirm that any pad lift or removal matches your rugs.
- Verify multi-floor use: confirm saved maps for separate levels and the manufacturer’s instructions for moving the robot and selecting a map.
- Compare the remaining models on evidence: prioritize results and specifications tied to your home’s conditions over headline suction ratings or broad feature labels.
For example, iRobot describes the Roomba Plus 504 Vac as having dual rubber brushes, carpet boost, object recognition that includes pet waste, an auto-empty dock, and 3D maps of multiple floors. Its US product page also claims the dock can hold debris for “up to 75 days”; that is a manufacturer claim whose result depends on use conditions, not a guaranteed interval. Consider it only if the exact model’s features match your rugs, floors, and layout.
