Choose a PS5 game by starting with what you want to do, then narrowing by who you’ll play with, the challenge you enjoy, accessibility needs, and the details of the specific edition. There is no universally best game for every player; the right fit depends on the experience you want and what each title actually supports.
Start with the kind of activity you want
Think about what you want to spend your time doing, rather than choosing by a game’s popularity or broad label alone. PlayStation’s game discovery guide groups recommendations around interests and formats such as story-led adventures, action, racing, sports, family play, and competitive genres.
- Story and characters: Look for a single-player adventure if you want to follow a narrative and spend time with its world and characters.
- Action and competition: Consider action games, team shooters, or battle royale if the appeal is combat, quick decisions, or competing against other players.
- Racing or sports: Choose these when you want to compete in races or matches, alone or with others depending on the title’s modes.
- Relaxed or family play: Check for games designed around approachable play, shared participation, or family-friendly themes; confirm the actual modes and age suitability on the listing.
- Rhythm or platforming: These may suit you if you enjoy timing, movement, and repeating short challenges.
Genres are a useful first filter, not a promise about difficulty, pacing, or social features. Check the individual game’s description and modes before deciding.
Do you want to play alone or with other people?
Decide whether you want a solo experience, local play in the same room, or online multiplayer. These formats are not interchangeable: a game can support one without supporting the others. PlayStation’s local multiplayer guide highlights couch-play options for PS5.

Solo play
If you mainly play alone, verify that the game has a single-player mode and whether it requires an internet connection or online service for the parts you want to use. Do not assume that a title advertised as multiplayer offers a substantial solo experience.
Local couch play
For same-room play, check the supported player count and whether the mode is cooperative or competitive. Local multiplayer may require an additional DualSense wireless controller if you do not already have enough controllers for the players involved; PlayStation lists an extra controller as an option for couch gaming in its guide.

Online multiplayer
Check the game’s online requirements before buying. PlayStation says an active PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer in most cases, but requirements can vary by title; confirm the specific game’s current listing and terms on the PS5 games page.
Match the game’s challenge and pace to your preferences
Ask yourself whether you enjoy a demanding test, a gentler pace, or options to adjust challenge as you go. Some games offer selectable difficulty, but difficulty labels and their effects vary by title. Look for the game’s own description of difficulty settings rather than assuming that a genre or franchise will feel a certain way.

Also consider how you like to play in a typical sitting. Official listings and guides do not establish a universal session-length label, so check whether a title supports convenient pausing and saving if that matters to you. A game’s structure—such as short stages or longer missions—may help you judge fit, but confirm details for the individual game.
Check accessibility features and control options
If you have specific visual, audio, motor, cognitive, or communication needs, inspect the game’s accessibility information before purchase. PS5 game hubs can display Accessibility Tags that cover areas including visual and audio settings, DualSense options, difficulty, and online communication. PlayStation explains how to find a game’s accessibility features through its game hub in its support instructions.

In a 2023 announcement, PlayStation said developers could choose from more than 50 Accessibility Tags across six categories. That is a count of tags available to describe games, not a count of features supported by any one title. Check both the tags and the game’s own feature list; do not infer support from a genre or series. PlayStation’s announcement describes the tag system.
If the standard controller does not meet your needs, PlayStation also describes its Access controller as an adaptive controller option on its accessibility page. Whether it is suitable depends on your setup and the game; check compatibility and configuration details before relying on it.

Use PS5 presets, but verify each game’s support
PS5 game presets let you set preferences for supported options such as difficulty, performance or resolution mode, camera view, subtitles and audio, and online-session preferences. These presets apply only where a game supports the relevant option. PlayStation lists the available preset categories and explains how to set them in its PS5 support guide.
Presets can save time when a title recognizes your preferences, but they are not a substitute for checking a game’s own menus. If a particular setting is essential, confirm that the title supports it rather than assuming the console-wide preference guarantees it.
Compare your shortlist before buying
When two or more games appeal to you, compare the specific details that affect whether you will enjoy playing them:

| Edition and availability | Is the listing for PS5, and does the edition and format match what you intend to buy? |
Use the current official game listing to verify platform, edition, player support, online requirements, and physical or digital format. PlayStation advises checking official sources for edition availability on its PS5 games page. Catalog, stock, prices, and regional edition availability can change, so confirm them for your region and at the time you buy.
