If you already own the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo says it can pair with Switch 2—so weigh those additions against reusing the controller you have.
Start with compatibility
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is designed for Switch 2 and does not work with the original Nintendo Switch, according to Nintendo Support. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair with Switch 2, making it a practical option for existing owners who do not need the newer model’s added features; see Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessories page.

When the C button matters
The C button is a shortcut to the GameChat menu. Nintendo says GameChat requires internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership on its US accessory page; service availability varies by country. If you do not use GameChat, this feature alone may not be a reason to replace a compatible controller.
When remappable rear buttons help
The GL and GR buttons sit on the back and can be mapped to buttons of your choice. They are useful if you want access to selected inputs without moving your thumbs from the main controls, but Nintendo’s feature listing does not establish a performance advantage for particular games.

Check your headset before relying on the jack
The new controller’s 3.5 mm headset port uses the CTIA 4-pole standard, according to Nintendo Singapore’s specification page. Nintendo says compatibility with all products is not guaranteed, so verify your specific headset rather than assuming every plug, microphone or headset function will work.
Choose a wired setup that matches how you play
Nintendo lists a USB-C charging cable as included with the Switch 2 Pro Controller. For wired tabletop play, Nintendo’s instructions specify a separately sold USB-C-to-USB-C cable. For docked TV mode, Nintendo names a USB-C-to-USB-A cable, model BEE-011. See the Nintendo Singapore product specifications and Nintendo Singapore setup instructions. Check the stated cable type for your setup instead of assuming one cable serves every configuration.

Set realistic expectations for charging and battery life
Nintendo Support’s US FAQ gives an approximate full charge time of three hours. Nintendo Singapore’s specification page instead lists approximately 3.5 hours. These are differing manufacturer figures, not independent measurements; the available pages do not explain the discrepancy. Nintendo Singapore estimates battery life at approximately 40 hours and notes that actual time may vary. Treat that as a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. Make the buy-or-reuse decision
- Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller if you want the dedicated GameChat button, remappable GL/GR controls or an onboard 3.5 mm headset connection.
- Reuse the original Switch Pro Controller if you already own one and its controls meet your needs; Nintendo says it can pair with Switch 2.
- Do not buy the Switch 2 model for an original Switch; Nintendo describes it as Switch 2-only.
Nintendo’s cited pages establish the official controller’s features and compatibility, but do not provide independent comparisons of comfort, latency, durability, stick drift or game-specific performance. Those qualities cannot be ranked from these specifications alone.
