A training opt-out, deleting a chat, and starting a temporary conversation are different controls—not guarantees that no copy of your data is kept. To choose an AI assistant for sensitive work, compare the exact product and account you will use, then check how it handles model training, chat history, backend retention, safety review, feedback, and authorized access.
What “private” means for an AI assistant
Every prompt passes through a data lifecycle. The provider may process it to generate a response, save it in visible history, retain backend copies, use it for safety or feedback review, or—depending on the product and settings—use eligible conversations to improve models. Work accounts may also have organization-level retention, access, or compliance rules.
These are separate questions, and a control for one does not necessarily change the others:
- Training: Are your conversations used to improve models, and which conversations does an opt-out cover?
- History: Does the conversation appear in your account, and can you delete it?
- Backend retention: How long can provider systems retain content after it disappears from your history?
- Safety and feedback: Can flagged conversations or feedback records be kept or handled differently?
- Access: Could provider personnel, service providers, or workspace administrators access the content for an authorized purpose?
- Additional data: What do connected apps, uploaded files, and organization integrations add to the data being processed?
A setting called “temporary,” “incognito,” or “activity off” may change history or training use without eliminating short-term service or safety retention. Likewise, paying for a subscription does not by itself establish that prompts are excluded from training or unavailable to an organization.

How ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini differ
The comparison below covers the consumer products described in each provider’s current policy documentation, plus separately identified work and API distinctions. A policy period is not a promise that every interaction follows one schedule: safety, feedback, legal, feature, and contractual exceptions can matter. Availability and controls may also vary by geography, account, plan, and product surface.
| Question | ChatGPT consumer | Claude consumer | Gemini Apps, signed in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Are chats used for model training? | Eligible users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” New conversations are then not used to train OpenAI models, but can still appear in chat history. OpenAI says eligible user feedback may allow the associated conversation to be used for training even after opting out. (OpenAI Help Center, “Data controls in ChatGPT.”) | Model improvement can be allowed or turned off. If allowed, new or resumed conversations may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. Flagged safety conversations and explicit opt-ins are separate cases. (Anthropic Privacy Center.) | With Keep Activity on, chats and shared content may be used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including training generative models. With it off, future chats are not used to train Google AI models unless you send feedback. (Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.) |
| What happens when you delete a chat? | Turning off training does not delete chats. Delete chats or the account separately; the cited Data Controls guidance does not state a general backend deletion period for consumer chats. | Deleted chats disappear from chat history immediately and are removed from backend storage within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. (Anthropic Privacy Center.) | With Keep Activity on, the default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity is 18 months; Google says it can be changed to 3 or 36 months, or set to indefinite. Deleting Activity does not delete separately retained chats selected for human review. (Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.) |
| What does temporary or incognito mode retain? | Temporary Chats do not appear in history, create memories, or help improve models. The cited OpenAI guidance does not state a general backend retention period for Temporary Chats. | Incognito chats do not appear in history or memory and are not used to improve Claude, even if model improvement is enabled. They are retained for 30 days by default, or longer under an Enterprise organization’s custom retention. (Anthropic Help Center.) | Temporary chats are not used to train Google AI models. Google says they are retained with the account for 72 hours for service response, feedback processing, and protection. The same 72-hour period applies to future chats created with Keep Activity off. (Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.) |
| Can people review conversations? | The cited guidance says feedback may result in the associated conversation being used for training. It does not state a general consumer human-review schedule in the cited Data Controls information. | Anthropic says consumer chats or coding data may be used for improvement when users allow it, when conversations are flagged for safety review for stated safety purposes, or under another explicit opt-in. The cited guidance does not give one general human-review schedule. | A subset of chats may be reviewed by human reviewers and trained service providers. Google says reviewed data is disconnected from the account before sharing with service providers, and reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years—even after Activity is deleted. |
| What about uploaded files and connected apps? | The cited guidance distinguishes memory, model training, and workspace controls, but does not specify a universal retention schedule for all connected apps or uploaded files. Check the permissions and terms for the particular feature. | The cited guidance does not establish one universal connected-app or uploaded-file retention schedule. Check the feature terms and the account’s consumer or organization policy. | Gemini Apps’ Activity policy covers chats and shared content. The cited policy does not establish a universal retention schedule for every connected app or file feature; check the relevant permissions and feature terms. |
What the controls do—and do not—change
Training opt-out is not deletion
OpenAI explicitly separates the “Improve the model for everyone” setting from deleting chats: switching training off affects use of new conversations for training, not whether they remain in history. Anthropic likewise documents model-improvement settings separately from chat deletion. For Claude, turning improvement off excludes previous and new chats from future training, but does not remove data already included in training runs in progress or completed models.

Temporary chats are not zero-retention
Claude Incognito and Gemini’s temporary chats change whether conversations appear in history and whether they are used for model improvement, but each still has a stated retention period. OpenAI describes Temporary Chats as absent from history and memory and excluded from model improvement; the cited guidance does not specify a general backend retention window for them. Do not infer that a missing history entry means the provider has no remaining copy.
Safety and feedback can have separate handling
Anthropic says flagged safety conversations may be used for safety purposes and that feedback records have their own retention period; flagged material may be retained longer than ordinary deleted chats. Google says feedback can be an exception to the training exclusion for chats created with Keep Activity off. OpenAI’s guidance likewise says that an eligible feedback submission may allow the associated conversation to be used for training despite an opt-out.

Consumer, work, and API accounts are not interchangeable
Do not apply the consumer app’s settings to a work deployment or API integration. The account type can change the default training rules, retention controls, and who administers access.
| Product or account type | What the cited policies establish |
|---|---|
| OpenAI managed workspaces | ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content is not used for model training by default. Workspace-level retention, memory, compliance, and access settings may still apply. The policy statement does not make every workspace’s retention or administrator access identical. (OpenAI Help Center.) |
| Anthropic commercial products and API | Anthropic’s organization-retention guidance, dated July 1, 2026, says API inputs and outputs are ordinarily deleted from backend systems within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as longer-retention features, agreed arrangements, usage-policy enforcement, or law. Products that save conversations retain them in-product; deletion removes them from history immediately and backend storage within 30 days. (Anthropic.) |
| Anthropic API with zero-data-retention (ZDR) | Under an eligible ZDR arrangement, Anthropic says prompts and responses are not stored at rest after the API response returns. The organization must have ZDR enabled, and eligibility and provider/data-processor roles vary by feature and cloud platform. This is not a default benefit of an ordinary Claude consumer subscription. (Anthropic API documentation.) |
| Gemini Apps while signed out | The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes signed-in use. Google says its Privacy Policy governs use while signed out, so do not assume the signed-in Keep Activity rules apply unchanged. |
For work data, an organization’s contract and administrator policy can be more relevant than the consumer-facing toggle. Ask who can access chats, how long records are retained, whether compliance or legal holds apply, and whether the organization has enabled special API terms such as ZDR where eligible.

How to choose an assistant for sensitive information
- Name the exact surface and account. Record the product, plan, whether you are signed in, and whether the account is personal, managed by an employer or school, or accessed through an API. Policies for one surface do not automatically cover another.
- Locate the training or activity control. In ChatGPT, check “Improve the model for everyone.” In Gemini Apps, check Keep Activity. In Claude, check the model-improvement setting. Confirm whether the choice applies to new conversations, earlier conversations, feedback, or only particular features.
- Read deletion and retention separately. Look for what disappears from history, when backend copies are removed, and any distinct period for temporary chats. Check whether the policy describes a normal schedule or exceptions for safety, law, feedback, or custom organization settings.
- Check who may see content. Look for human review, service-provider processing, safety investigations, and administrator or compliance access. “Not used for training” does not necessarily mean “not accessed for any purpose.”
- Review connected apps and uploads. Check which accounts or files a feature can access, what content it sends to the assistant, and which provider or organization terms govern that feature. A chat toggle alone may not describe the handling of every integration.
- For work or API use, verify the governing terms. Ask the administrator or provider about retention, access, deletion, regional or feature eligibility, and any contract-specific controls. If relying on ZDR or a custom retention arrangement, verify that it is enabled for the actual account and feature.
- Minimize sensitive details. If the documented handling is unclear or does not meet the data’s sensitivity, remove identifiers and confidential details—or do not submit the information.
