Choose a phone by comparing battery endurance under similar test conditions—not by picking the largest mAh number. Capacity is useful context, but real runtime depends on the phone’s power use, your workload, and settings. Then check charging practicality, heat management, and how the battery is expected to age.
Start with the kind of battery life you need
Battery life is the time a phone runs before it needs recharging; battery lifespan is how long its battery remains useful before replacement. Apple makes this distinction in its iPhone battery and performance guidance. A phone can last a long day when new yet lose capacity over years of use.
Before comparing models, describe a typical day: hours of screen use, video and camera work, navigation, gaming, hotspot use, cellular reception, and how long you are away from a charger. A phone used mostly on Wi-Fi for messaging has a different workload from one used for navigation, video, or games on mobile data.
Compare endurance results, not just mAh
Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge capacity, not guaranteed screen-on hours. Runtime also depends on how much power the phone draws. Display size and brightness, resolution, refresh behavior, processor and modem activity, software, and your usage all matter.

Samsung lists the Galaxy S24 Ultra (model S928B) at 5,000 mAh typical capacity and cautions that capacity and usage hours vary with settings and usage patterns. That figure is useful context, not proof that it outlasts another phone. See Samsung’s battery-capacity information.
When possible, compare independent runtime tests that use the same protocol. Check what each test actually does—such as video playback, web browsing, or mixed use—and note brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi or cellular connection, and the test’s stopping point. Results from unlike tests are not a fair ranking.
An official product sheet can add useful evidence, but keep its model and testing framework attached. Samsung’s EU product information sheet for model SM-S936B/DS reports 43 hours of battery endurance per cycle, 2,000 endurance cycles at default settings, and energy efficiency class B under the EU framework cited in the sheet. These are product-sheet results, not a promise of an individual’s runtime or a direct comparison with a different test. Read the Samsung product information sheet.
The evidence here does not establish a current cross-brand phone with the longest battery life. Do not treat either Samsung example as a market-wide runtime winner.

Use capacity as context, then consider efficiency
A larger battery can provide more stored charge, but the phone’s power draw determines how quickly that charge is used. Compare capacity alongside the display, processor and modem workload, software behavior, and the kind of use reflected in the endurance test. Also consider your own day: a demanding workload can drain a phone faster than light messaging and browsing.
Settings can affect consumption. Samsung recommends reducing screen brightness and screen timeout, lowering resolution where available, and avoiding live wallpapers to help extend Galaxy battery life. These are practical trade-offs: dimmer screens or lower resolution may save power but change the viewing experience. Samsung’s Galaxy battery-optimization guidance.
Evaluate charging speed by useful charge, not peak watts
Peak charging wattage alone does not show how quickly a phone reaches a useful charge level or how long a full charge takes. For each candidate, look for tested time to a practical percentage, whether the result is wired or wireless, what compatible charger is required, and how charging behavior changes as the battery fills. The sources cited here do not provide comparable charging-time tests across phone models, so treat those as model-specific checks rather than assume a winner.
Fast charging is not, by itself, evidence that a phone’s battery will be damaged. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that broad claim. Heat is a more concrete concern: Apple says an iPhone may have permanently reduced battery lifespan when used or charged in ambient temperatures above 35°C. Samsung identifies 0–35°C as the Galaxy’s optimal usage temperature and warns that prolonged temperature extremes can accelerate deterioration. For everyday charging, avoid leaving a phone in a hot car or charging it in excessive heat. Cold can temporarily reduce available runtime; a degraded battery may also be more prone to voltage-related shutdowns.

Rechargeable batteries lose capacity and peak power as they chemically age. Apple explains that maximum capacity is measured relative to when the battery was new and that higher battery impedance can limit instantaneous power delivery. An aging battery can therefore mean both fewer hours per charge and less ability to supply peak power.
Manufacturer cycle-life figures are not interchangeable across brands or models. Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 batteries are designed to retain 80% after 1,000 cycles, under ideal conditions. Actual results vary with use and charging. These are Apple design targets, not a cross-brand standard. Apple’s battery performance explanation.
Charging controls can reduce time spent at a high charge level, but recommendations differ by maker. Apple says iPhone stops charging when full and uses Optimized Battery Charging by default to reduce the time spent fully charged. Samsung recommends keeping a Galaxy between 20% and 80% when practical and provides Battery protection options. These are device-specific features and advice; they do not mean every phone needs the same charge limit.
If buying used, inspect the phone’s battery-health report where available and check the maker’s service guidance. Samsung recommends service checks for frequent unexpected shutdowns or noticeable battery decline; Apple notes that an aged battery may eventually need replacement. - Define your day: estimate screen time, camera and video use, navigation, gaming, hotspot use, signal conditions, and time away from power.
- Collect comparable endurance evidence: prefer the same independent test protocol for every candidate. Record workload, brightness, connection, and cutoff criteria. If relying on an official product sheet, keep its exact model and scheme with the result.
- Record capacity without ranking by it: compare mAh as supporting context alongside display, processing and modem demands, and your own workload.
- Check charging in practice: find time to a useful charge level, wired and wireless options, charger requirements, and any heat-management or charging controls.
- Consider ownership: review battery-health reporting, service access, and replacement cost for the specific model. Weigh a larger phone’s possible battery capacity against its size and weight.
