Choose a computer by matching its form factor and specifications to the work you actually do and where you do it. Start with your daily tasks and setting, then compare processor, memory, storage, graphics, display, battery life, ports, and upgrade options against your budget. No single configuration is best for everyone.
Should you buy a desktop, laptop, or 2-in-1?
Decide first whether the computer will stay in one place or travel with you. Microsoft’s guide to Windows 11 devices describes the trade-offs among desktops, laptops, and tablets; the right fit depends on how you work and what you value, not the category name alone.
| Form factor | Good fit when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | You expect to work mainly in one place and want a comfortable fixed setup, a larger display, flexibility with accessories, or the potential for stronger performance for the money. | Desk and setup space, included accessories, ports, external-display support, and which parts can be upgraded. |
| Laptop | You move between rooms, school, work, or travel and want the screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, and battery in one device. | Weight, battery life for your routine, keyboard and trackpad comfort, ports, and display suitability. |
| 2-in-1 | You want a laptop that can also be used in a tablet-style configuration. | Confirm the specific model’s keyboard, pen support if needed, weight, screen, and how well it handles both laptop and tablet tasks. |
A desktop may offer more flexibility, but a laptop avoids the need to assemble a separate screen and input devices. A 2-in-1 is not automatically a better tablet or laptop: inspect the particular design against the tasks you expect it to handle. Microsoft’s form-factor overview is at Desktop, laptop, or tablet: Which Windows 11 device is right for you?.
What should you look for in a new PC?
Compare the complete configuration, not a processor name or headline feature in isolation. A useful shortlist starts with the programs you use, the number of tasks you keep open, the files you store locally, and any graphics or display demands.
#1 Best Overall
- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Processor: Check that the processor and exact device configuration meet the requirements of your applications. Branding alone does not establish how well a computer will suit your workload.
- Memory (RAM): More memory can help when several applications are open or when games and creative tools demand it. Consider the amount supplied and whether it can be upgraded.
- Storage: Estimate space for installed applications, documents, photos, video, and games. Decide how much you will keep on the computer versus in cloud storage, and check whether the drive is an SSD.
- Graphics: Everyday browsing and documents may not need dedicated graphics. Gaming and demanding creative work can benefit from stronger graphics; check the requirements of the specific games or applications.
- Display: Match size and resolution to your work and viewing distance. Refresh rate can matter for gaming, while color accuracy may matter for photo and video editing.
- Battery, ports, and ergonomics: For a laptop, assess battery life for the places you use it. Check that the ports support your peripherals and displays, and try the keyboard and trackpad where possible.
Microsoft’s US-market overview says an SSD is faster than an older HDD for booting and opening files. That is a vendor-published buying point, not an independent benchmark; compare the storage type and capacity on the exact model you are considering. The overview is available at What to Look for in a New PC.
How much RAM and storage do you need?
The figures below are Microsoft’s workload examples, not universal minimums or guarantees of performance. Software requirements and the computer’s other components also matter. Microsoft’s buying guide does not state a publication date for its recommendations.

| Light everyday use | Microsoft’s overview characterizes 8 GB RAM as suitable for everyday use. | Use this as a starting point for modest workloads; check current operating-system and application requirements and allow for how many programs you keep open. |
| Multitasking | 8 GB to 16 GB RAM. | Favor the configuration that fits your actual mix of open applications rather than treating the range as a performance guarantee. |
| Student | 8 GB to 16 GB or more RAM; 256 GB to 1 TB or more storage. | Account for course software, project files, and whether you rely on cloud storage. |
| Gaming | 16 GB to 64 GB RAM; 512 GB to 2 TB or more storage depending on files; discrete graphics for intensive graphics. | Check each game’s requirements and the precise graphics configuration. Larger libraries and captured footage use more local storage. |
| Creators and heavier multitaskers | Microsoft’s overview describes 16 GB RAM as useful for creators, gamers, and multitaskers; 512 GB or more storage as useful for photos, videos, games, and projects. | Estimate project sizes and the requirements of your editing or creative applications before choosing capacity. |
These ranges and descriptions come from Microsoft’s PC and Laptop Buying Guide: Find the Right Computer and What to Look for in a New PC. They are vendor guidance rather than independent testing. Verify the current software requirements and the exact configuration before purchase; a model name can cover versions with different memory, storage, or graphics.

What display matters for gaming or creative work?
For gaming, Microsoft’s overview suggests considering 1080p (Full HD) or higher resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher. Those are considerations, not requirements for every gamer. Match resolution and refresh rate to the games you play, the graphics hardware, screen size, and budget; a demanding display is useful only if the computer can drive it in your games.

For photo and video editing, color accuracy may be more important than a high refresh rate. - Set a budget and list must-haves. Write down your main applications, regular tasks, mobility needs, required ports, and whether you need an external display.
- Choose the form factor. Decide between a fixed desktop setup, a portable laptop, or a 2-in-1 based on where you will use it and whether tablet-style use matters.
- Set workload-appropriate specifications. Compare the processor, RAM, storage, graphics, and display against the requirements of your own applications and files.
- Check the complete configuration. Confirm memory, drive type and capacity, screen, operating system, included accessories, warranty, ports, and upgradeability on the exact listing. Configurations and availability vary by market.
- Compare trade-offs, not just price. At your budget, decide which features materially improve your work and which you can do without. The consulted Microsoft guides do not establish a neutral universal price for a good PC or independently rank models.
Prices, configurations, and regional availability change. Confirm the current listing and software compatibility before buying; a recommendation based only on a model family or processor label may not match the particular unit for sale.
