Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Choose characters for the fight and the abilities you want, then tune their rows, equipment, relics, and magicite. For a first playthrough, useful spells and sensible gear matter more than carefully engineering every level-up.
How to choose a party setup
Start with the encounter rather than a fixed lineup. Ask what the group needs: a character-specific command, physical or magical damage, support options, or a particular equipment fit. The available roster also changes with the story, and some sequences require multiple teams, so treat your lineup as flexible.
- Command utility: Does the character add an ability your current group lacks?
- Damage and defense: Which row suits the character’s attacks and the encounter?
- Equipment and relics: Can the character use the gear available, and which two relics address the group’s needs?
- Magic coverage: Does the character know useful spells or have an Esper setup that fills a gap?
- Control and randomness: Do you prefer a predictable command, a setup-heavy system, or a variable one?
These are ways to compare options, not a ranking. Equipment, learned spells, roster availability, and your tolerance for randomness can all change which party feels right.
What each character can bring
Characters have distinct commands, but their roles are not completely fixed: magicite can teach spells, while equipment and relics can change what a character can do. The examples below draw on the Nintendo Final Fantasy VI Advance instruction manual, the Square Enix character overview, and the secondary Final Fantasy VI Strategy Guide.

| Character | Distinguishing feature | Party-building consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Terra | Square Enix describes her as born with magic; magicite and Espers expand spell access. | A natural choice when you want magic access, though other characters can learn spells through the magicite system. |
| Locke | Steal; the Brigand’s Glove relic changes Steal to Mug. | Consider him for theft utility or when his available equipment fits your plan. |
| Edgar | Tools. | Adds a character-specific command option. |
| Sabin | Blitz. | Offers a distinct special-command damage option. |
| Gau | Leap on the Veldt adds monster techniques to Rage. | Rage can be highly customizable, but selecting it makes Gau less controllable; plan around that constraint. |
| Mog | He learns Dances by fighting in different environments. | Which Dances are available depends on the environments where he has fought. |
| Setzer | Slot uses spinning reels, with effects determined by the result. | Choose him if you are comfortable with a command whose outcome varies. |
| Gogo | Square Enix describes Gogo as able to replicate actions; the strategy guide details selecting several commands to mimic. | Flexible command selection can be useful when Gogo is available. |
Use row placement as a physical-defense tradeoff
The Nintendo manual explains that the back row reduces damage received from physical attacks and also reduces physical damage dealt. It is not a general defense against every damage type. Put a character in the back row when the physical-damage reduction suits the encounter, especially if that character’s contribution does not depend on full-strength physical attacks. Keep a close-range physical attacker forward when its damage matters more than the defensive benefit.
Check equipment and relics when the lineup changes
Characters can equip different sets of weapons and armor, so do not assume that a character label alone tells you what gear is best. The manual’s equipment menu shows whether a selected item raises or lowers attributes. Check those changes when assigning gear.

Each character can equip up to two relics. Use those slots to address a specific need: for example, the manual describes the Brigand’s Glove turning Locke’s Steal into Mug, and the Knight’s Code automatically covering wounded allies. Revisit relics when the party or encounter changes rather than treating one setup as permanent.
Develop characters with magicite and Espers
Equipping magicite lets characters learn spells. That makes spell access a flexible way to fill gaps in the party rather than a reason to reserve magic for one character. The manual identifies Strength as affecting physical attack damage, Speed as affecting turn frequency, Stamina as affecting HP recovery, and Magic as affecting magical attack damage.

Some Espers also grant a stat bonus when a character gains a level while that Esper is equipped. The secondary strategy guide lists examples including Stray’s Magic Power +1, ZoneSeek’s Magic Power +2, Bismark’s Vigor +2, Odin’s Speed +1, and Bahamut’s HP +50%. These are guide-listed level-up bonuses, not requirements for completing the game.
For a first playthrough
Prioritize spells you will use and equipment that suits each character. Rotate magicite as you like to broaden spell options. You do not need to plan every level-up around stat bonuses to make an effective party.

For stat optimization
Plan ahead if you specifically want a character to gain a particular stat bonus: the equipped Esper at level-up matters. The strategy guide also discusses release-specific Evade/MBlock behavior, so do not apply its bug-related or optimization advice across editions without checking the version you are playing. Exact stat priorities are a matter of preference, and the guide’s recommendations are not universal rules.

Gau’s Rage
Gau learns monster abilities through Leap on the Veldt, then uses them through Rage. The guide describes this as a collection-and-setup system; it can expand his options, but selecting Rage reduces direct control over his behavior. Use Gau when that tradeoff fits your approach rather than assuming his command will behave like a fully directed action.

Mog’s Dance
Mog learns Dances by fighting in different environments. If you want a wider selection, pay attention to where he has fought; the strategy guide identifies environment as part of Dance learning.
Keep the build flexible
After a party change, review row, equipment, relics, and learned magic together. A character’s command may be useful in one fight and less useful in another, while the story can change who is available. Use the roster and tools you have for the current challenge rather than overcommitting to a single four-person party for the entire game.
