Choose a music distributor by checking what its royalty statements reveal, how reporting and withdrawals work, which revenue it handles, what it charges or retains, and how it responds to suspected artificial streaming. A headline claim such as “100% royalties” does not answer those questions. Compare current written terms and policies rather than assuming one distributor is faster, more transparent, or better at detecting fraud; the published materials reviewed here do not establish an overall winner or independently test detection accuracy or appeal fairness.

What to compare before choosing a distributor

Use the same checklist for every service. A sample statement or help page can show what is visible publicly; the agreement and support responses help fill in what is not.

Area Questions to ask What to verify
Royalty statements Can you see earnings by store, territory, reporting period, track, usage, adjustments, and currency? Can you download statements? Are figures estimates or finalized? A sample statement or documentation explaining the fields and whether amounts can change.
Reporting and processing time When do each of your stores report activity, and how long does the distributor take to process it and make funds withdrawable? Store-specific reporting guidance, distributor processing time, and the date of the applicable policy. These are separate stages.
Withdrawal conditions Is there a minimum balance? What payment methods, processing charges, taxes, or country-specific rules apply? Are there store-specific eligibility thresholds? Current payout terms for your country and any store-specific eligibility rules.
Revenue scope Does the service handle master-recording royalties only, or also offer separately contracted publishing, neighboring-rights, or social-video services? The contract and service description. Confirm what you must arrange yourself, including permissions and payments to collaborators.
Share and continuity What share is retained, including for optional services? What changes if you cancel a subscription? Do releases remain available? Current plan terms and cancellation policy, not just the headline royalty-share claim.
Fraud policy and response Which activities are prohibited? What notice is given if activity is flagged? Can royalties be withheld, fines imposed, releases removed, or accounts frozen? Is there a response or appeal route? Policy and contract language, plus a written support answer for any process the public material does not explain.

Understand reporting delays and payout timing

Streaming activity and the money visible in a distributor account are separated by reporting and processing delays. The store first reports usage and earnings; the distributor then processes the report and applies its withdrawal rules. A statement arriving late does not by itself show that the distributor is slow to process payments.

DistroKid says services report earnings every one to two months for activity from earlier months, that most earnings may appear around three months after a release, and that some services report only once or twice a year. Amuse says stores take two to six months to pay. These are providers’ explanations, not measurements from a controlled comparison, and the timelines are not directly comparable.

When assessing a distributor, look for separate answers to when each store reports, when the distributor posts the report, and when funds become withdrawable. Also check for minimum balances and any store-specific eligibility conditions. For example, Amuse’s help page describes a Spotify monetization eligibility minimum of 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months; that is a specific rule described by Amuse, not a universal streaming threshold.

Read beyond the royalty-share headline

A claim that a distributor passes through “100%” of royalties can describe its share of store-allocated earnings without covering every deduction or scenario. DistroKid says it passes through 100% of earnings allocated by stores, with exceptions including an optional social-media monetization add-on, payment-processing fees, and tax withholding. LANDR says it pays 100% of royalties while a subscription is active; its help page says a 15% commission applies after subscription cancellation, while releases remain live.

Before signing up, check what the percentage applies to, whether optional services carry a charge or share, what payment fees or withholding may apply, and what changes on cancellation. These are plan-specific terms and may change, so rely on the current agreement and help pages.

Check what royalties and rights the service covers

Distribution of sound recordings does not automatically mean a distributor handles every kind of music income or clears every right. Find out whether publishing administration, neighboring-rights collection, or social-video monetization is included, separately contracted, or outside the service. Do not infer these services from a general distribution plan description.

Amuse’s terms place responsibility for obtaining permissions and paying collaborators and other contributors on the artist, and state that royalty calculations are governed by store agreements. Make sure you understand which obligations remain yours and how the distributor’s scope fits your rights and release arrangements.

Understand artificial-streaming rules and consequences

Artificial streaming can include bots, stream farms, paid or “guaranteed-play” services, and fake playlisting. Distributor policies may treat activity as a risk even when an artist did not knowingly arrange it, so read the prohibited-conduct language and the procedures that follow a flag.

These are descriptions in the distributors’ published materials, not evidence that their detection systems have equivalent accuracy or that every case receives the same outcome. Ask how the service identifies the affected release, store, reporting period, and policy provision; whether it provides notice; and how an artist can submit an explanation or appeal. The reviewed materials do not support a comparative judgment about appeal fairness.

Fraud prevention also involves coordination beyond an individual artist account. A Federal Register document describes identity verification, contractual prohibitions and penalties, and the Music Fights Fraud Alliance, launched in 2023, as efforts to coordinate distributors and digital music providers. Those measures do not establish how effective any one distributor’s detection system is. IFPI’s 2026 Global Music Report relayed Deezer’s figure that up to 85% of streams on AI-generated music were fraudulent in 2025, up from the 70% figure Deezer reported for the prior year. This is a narrowly attributed figure about streams on AI-generated music, not a general estimate for all streaming or distributors.

Published examples: what the available terms say

The examples below compare public statements accessed or updated by October 7, 2026. They are not a ranking, and the providers’ reporting timelines are not equivalent measurements.

Distributor Reporting or payout information Share or cancellation terms Fraud policy information
DistroKid Says services report on varying schedules: earnings may arrive around three months after release for many services, while some report once or twice a year. Says it passes through 100% of store-allocated earnings, subject to exceptions including an optional social-media monetization add-on, payment-processing fees, and tax withholding. The cited materials do not establish a comparable fraud-policy process or independent detection performance.
Amuse Says stores take two to six months to pay. Its help page describes a Spotify eligibility minimum of 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months and says payout thresholds may delay withdrawal. Its terms say store agreements govern royalty calculations and minimum stream requirements may apply. Check current plan terms for share and cancellation details. Lists withheld royalties, fines, takedowns, and account restrictions; cites $10 per affected track for Spotify-reported artificial streams.
LANDR The cited materials do not state a comparable store-reporting timeline. Says it pays 100% of royalties while a subscription is active; its help page says releases remain live after cancellation and a 15% commission then applies. Prohibits stream farms, bots, guaranteed-play services, and fake playlisting; guidance says identified manipulation may lead to takedowns and withheld royalties.

Provider terms and help pages can change. Confirm the current wording and its applicability to your plan, country, and release before relying on a specific figure or consequence.

A practical decision process

  1. List your needs. Note the stores and territories you need, how you want to inspect earnings, the types of revenue you expect, and the payment methods available to you.
  2. Collect the current documents. For each candidate, find a sample statement or statement guide, payout rules, plan and cancellation terms, revenue-service descriptions, and artificial-streaming policy.
  3. Compare reporting stages separately. Record store reporting intervals, distributor processing time, and withdrawal conditions as distinct items. Do not treat an estimate of store delays as a promise of distributor payout speed.
  4. Check deductions and responsibilities. Identify commissions, optional-service fees, payment charges, tax withholding, minimum balances, rights clearances, and contributor payments.
  5. Test policy clarity with support. Ask what evidence or details the distributor supplies after a flag, how to respond, and whether the policy describes an appeal route. Keep the answer in writing.
  6. Choose on verifiable fit. Prefer the service whose statements, timing, terms, and enforcement process you can understand and accept—not the one with the broadest percentage or fastest-sounding marketing claim.
