As of October 2026, Expert Reviews names the Honor Magic 8 Lite its best mid-range phone for battery life. It ran for more than 40 hours in the publication’s looped-video test, against 34 hours 5 minutes for the Google Pixel 9a. Those are controlled test results, not promises for everyday use. This guide shows how to read them and what else to weigh.
Step 1: Compare tested runtime, not battery capacity
A bigger battery usually helps, but it does not predict runtime on its own. Screen, chipset, software and the test conditions all affect the result. Expert Reviews lists the Honor Magic 8 Lite with a 7,500mAh battery and the Pixel 9a with a 5,100mAh battery. The Honor lasted more than 40 hours and the Pixel 34 hours 5 minutes. That is a large capacity gap, yet it does not produce a proportional gap in hours. Use capacity as a hint and a measured test as the evidence.
Step 2: Read the test method before comparing numbers
Battery figures from different publications are not interchangeable. Each uses its own routine, brightness and settings.

The Galaxy A57’s 11:13 does not mean it is far worse than a phone with a 40-hour result. The two figures come from different tests and cannot be set against each other. Compare numbers only within one publication’s tests, or between tests that use similar routines.

A looped-video test in flight mode is a clean, repeatable way to rank phones. It leaves out mobile signal, gaming, camera use and background apps, so your real-world hours will usually be lower and will vary. Simulated-use tests such as Which?’s try to mimic mixed activity. Neither type is “right”; they answer slightly different questions.
Step 3: Don’t pay extra for battery life
Which? says its lab results show no correlation between high price and good battery life. In its testing, phones under £350 were more likely to have longer battery lives than phones above £350. That is a finding about the phones Which? tested, not a rule for every handset. Still, it is a good reason to resist assuming a pricier model will last longer. Which? also reports that 45% of shoppers say battery life is a priority. The retrieved passage did not state the survey’s sample or dates, so treat that figure as Which?’s own.

Step 4: Weigh what you give up
A battery champion can carry real weaknesses. Expert Reviews flags the Honor Magic 8 Lite’s middling performance and weak ultrawide camera next to its endurance, and lists its UK review price as £400. If you shoot a lot of wide-angle photos or play demanding games, that trade-off may matter more than a few extra hours.
Check these factors alongside the runtime:
- Performance: a long-lasting phone that stutters in the apps you use is a poor fit.
- Cameras: look at each lens, not just the main one.
- Charging speed: the Galaxy A57 is listed by Tom’s Guide at 45W wired charging. Faster charging can offset a smaller battery, so a short runtime matters less if you top up quickly.
- Software support: Tom’s Guide reports Samsung guarantees six years of security updates and four years of major Android upgrades for the Galaxy A57. Expert Reviews reports seven years of software support for the Pixel 9a. Longer support keeps a phone safe and usable, and a battery you may later replace is worth more in a phone that still gets updates.
- Size and weight: big batteries often mean bigger, heavier phones. Check the dimensions against what you will tolerate in a pocket.
- Durability: check dust and water resistance ratings and build for your own use.

The strongest battery-first evidence here comes from UK publications, and the prices are the review prices, not live quotes. Prices, regional variants and availability differ by country and change often. Confirm the exact model, current local price and seller before buying.

A quick decision process
- Set your budget in your own market. “Mid-range” prices vary by country.
- Collect endurance results from reviewers who publish their test method, and compare them only within the same method.
- Cross out phones whose weak points hit your daily use, such as slow performance or a poor secondary camera.
- Check charging speed and support length for the remaining models.
- Verify the exact regional model and current price before buying.
If battery life is your top priority and you can accept average performance, the Honor Magic 8 Lite is the strongest tested option in the evidence above. If you value long software support and a more balanced phone, the Pixel 9a’s 34-hour result is still strong at a lower review price.
