Start with the device you’ll watch on and where your media is stored. For files on a computer or phone, choose a player available for that operating system and check it against the formats you actually have. For a home server, choose a compatible server-and-client combination, then confirm whether your device can play your files directly or needs the server to convert them.

First decide where your media lives

Files stored on your computer or phone

For local files, the player runs on the device holding the media. Check that the app is available for that device’s operating system, then test its documented support against your actual video, audio, container, and subtitle formats. There is no reliable universal ranking of standalone players here: support depends on the app and platform, so avoid choosing solely by a claim that a player handles “everything.”

Files stored on a home server or network library

A server-backed library has two parts: software that stores or serves the library, and a client app on the device where you watch. Pick a server/client setup that has a client for your TV, streaming device, or other playback device. Jellyfin lists clients for platforms including Android TV, Fire TV, and Roku, but a client’s availability does not guarantee that it supports every file you own: Jellyfin client downloads.

Jellyfin’s stated goal is to “Direct Play all media.” Direct play means the client can handle the container, video, audio, and subtitles in the file. If one component is incompatible, the server may need to convert the media. Jellyfin explains these compatibility requirements in its codec support documentation.

Check the exact playback device and app

Compatibility is specific to the client you will use—not just the brand of television or the server software. A TV manufacturer’s built-in playback system may differ from an Android TV, Fire TV, or Roku app installed on a television. Plex’s Smart TV guidance applies to its Smart TV app and explicitly excludes those other app categories; it also says that manufacturer-provided playback systems affect compatibility: Plex: What media formats are supported on Smart TVs?

For Plex’s Smart TV app, native format support is typically limited to MP4, H.264, and AAC. That is not a universal limit for all televisions or media players. Plex Media Server may direct-stream or transcode content the app cannot play natively. Check the documentation for your specific app and TV model rather than applying one platform’s format guidance to another.

Match the complete file, not just its extension

A file extension such as .mkv or .mp4 identifies a container, not everything inside it. The container holds a video stream, an audio stream, and possibly subtitles; the client needs to support the relevant combination. Plex’s media playback guidance describes how a server can direct-stream or transcode when a client cannot play content as supplied.

  • Container: Check the container used by your files, such as MKV or MP4.
  • Video: Verify the video codec is supported by the exact app and device.
  • Audio: Check the audio codec as well; video compatibility alone is not enough for direct play.
  • Subtitles: Confirm whether the client can render the subtitle format directly or whether server conversion may be required.

Roku Media Player documents support for embedded subtitles in MKV files, but that specific capability does not establish support for every MKV or subtitle format: Roku Media Player: What types of media files can I play?

Choose with subtitles in mind

Identify how the subtitles are stored

Subtitles may be embedded in the video file or provided as a separate file. They may also be text-based or image-based. Those distinctions affect whether a client can display them directly. When using an external subtitle file with Plex, check that the format is supported and that the file is named correctly alongside the video; Plex recommends UTF-8 encoding for text subtitle files. See Plex’s instructions for adding local subtitles.

Account for image-based subtitles

VOBSUB and PGS subtitles are image-based formats. Plex notes that many apps require video transcoding to burn these subtitles into the picture. That can mean server conversion rather than direct playback, so a subtitle-heavy library should be checked with the precise client and server setup you expect to use.

Use this checklist before settling on a player

  1. Name the playback device and app. Distinguish a TV’s built-in app from an Android TV, Fire TV, or Roku app on the same television.
  2. Decide whether playback is local or server-backed. A standalone player reads files on its device; a server-backed setup needs a supported client on the viewing device.
  3. Check representative files. For the files you actually watch, note container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle type.
  4. Confirm direct-play support. Look up the exact client’s documentation for the whole combination, not just the container.
  5. Check conversion behavior. If direct play is not supported, confirm whether your server can convert the file and whether subtitles may need burn-in.
  6. For external subtitles, verify naming and encoding. Follow the server or player’s instructions for matching subtitle files to videos.

For a server-backed library, Jellyfin and Plex both document compatibility and conversion considerations, but their documentation does not establish a complete head-to-head feature comparison. Make the decision around the client on your intended device and the media formats that matter to you.
