Choose a mechanical keyboard by matching its keys and layout to your daily tasks, then decide what switch feel and noise level suit your workspace. Linear, tactile, and clicky describe useful starting points—not a guaranteed match for a particular job or typing style. If you can, try switches before buying; otherwise, compare their force and travel specifications and check the keyboard’s exact layout and compatibility.
Start with the keys you use and the space you have
Before choosing switches or features, list the keys you rely on: number pad, function row, arrow keys, and navigation keys such as Home, End, and Page Up. Then consider how much desk width you can give the keyboard. Smaller layouts save space, but may require function layers or a separate number pad.
| Layout | What it usually retains | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size | Number pad, function row, arrows, and navigation cluster | Best fit if you regularly enter numbers or want dedicated keys, but it takes the most width. |
| 96% or 1800-style | Nearly all keys in a more compact arrangement | Can preserve the number pad while reducing some spacing; check the exact model’s arrangement. |
| TKL (tenkeyless) | Function row, arrows, and navigation keys | Removes the number pad to reduce width. |
| 75% | Usually the function row and arrows in a tighter footprint | Check how navigation keys are arranged and whether their spacing works for you. |
| 65% | Usually arrows | Function or navigation actions may require a layer. |
| 60% | A minimal set of dedicated keys | Arrows and function keys commonly rely on layers, which can take practice. |
Percent labels are approximate form-factor descriptions, not precise measurements, and layouts vary between models. If you enter numbers often but want a narrower main keyboard, a separate number pad can be a compromise. If you use F-keys or arrows frequently, confirm that those keys are dedicated—or that the required layer arrangement feels acceptable. [WIRED; Lenovo; Mechalick]
Choose a switch by feel, not color
Mechanical switches are commonly grouped as linear, tactile, or clicky. These terms describe broad feel and sound tendencies; they do not determine what every person will prefer. Individual switches also differ in operating force, pre-travel, total travel, and construction. [RTINGS]

| Switch family | Typical feel | Useful consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Smooth travel without a tactile bump | Some typists like the fluid feel; others find linear switches too sensitive or more prone to accidental presses. |
| Tactile | A noticeable bump during a keypress | The bump provides physical feedback and is typically less disruptive than a clicky switch. |
| Clicky | A tactile event with a distinct audible click | Choose it only if that sound suits the people and setting around you. |
Operating force is the force required for a keypress to register. Pre-travel is how far the key moves before it registers. A shorter pre-travel can feel more sensitive, which may suit fast input but can also increase accidental presses. Neither switch type nor a short travel distance is inherently fastest for everyone.
Color labels such as red, brown, and blue are rough cues, not universal specifications. Names and specifications differ by manufacturer, so compare the actual force and pre-travel figures when available rather than relying on color alone. If the feel is uncertain, try a display board or switch tester. A sampler lets you feel differences, but cannot predict your typing speed, comfort, or long-term preference. [RTINGS; Mechalick]

Consider noise in the room where you will type
Clicky switches are intentionally audible and may be a poor fit for a shared office, classroom, or quiet home. Linear switches are often quieter, but no switch label guarantees a quiet keyboard. Sound also comes from keycaps, stabilizers, the plate and case, the desk surface, and how forcefully you type or bottom out the keys.
Terms such as “thocky” and “clacky” are subjective. Recordings can sound different depending on the microphone and surroundings, so they are not a reliable promise of how a keyboard will sound at your desk. [RTINGS; Mechalick]

Check height, keycaps, and the typing angle
A low-profile keyboard may let you type without angling your wrists as steeply upward or using a wrist rest. That is a possible benefit, not a guarantee of ergonomic fit or comfort. Case height, typing angle, your hands, and the rest of your workspace matter; a lower keyboard is not automatically better for everyone. [RTINGS; Mechalick]
Keycaps affect surface feel, sound, and wear. ABS and PBT are common materials with different characteristics, but material alone does not establish overall quality. If you plan to replace keycaps, verify that the set matches the keyboard’s layout and bottom row; a set that looks similar may not fit every key arrangement. [Lenovo; WIRED; Mechalick]

Decide whether wired, wireless, or hot-swap matters
Wired or wireless
Wired USB is a straightforward option for a stationary setup and avoids managing a keyboard battery. Wireless can help if you want flexible placement or to switch between devices, but battery life, connection options, and latency vary by model. For latency-sensitive gaming, a connection type or advertised polling rate alone does not describe the whole system: the keyboard, USB or radio handling, computer, and game all contribute. [Lenovo; Mechalick]
Hot-swap or soldered switches
Hot-swap sockets let you replace compatible switches without desoldering. Before buying a board or replacement switches, confirm the socket type, supported pin count, and switch footprint; switches that look similar are not necessarily interchangeable. Remove and insert switches carefully, since repeated or careless handling can damage MX-style sockets. A soldered board remains a reasonable option if you are confident in its switch configuration. [WIRED; Mechalick]

Use a shortlist to make the final choice
Compare candidate keyboards against the needs that affect your daily use. Price and RGB lighting matter less than getting the fit, keys, and feel right.
- Keys and layout: Does it have the number pad, function row, arrows, and navigation keys you use? If not, are layers or a separate number pad practical for you?
- Switch feel: Does the switch family suit your preference? Compare operating force and pre-travel where specifications are available.
- Noise: Is the expected sound appropriate for the room and the people nearby?
- Height and angle: Does the board’s profile and typing angle suit your hands and workspace?
- Connection: Do you need a fixed wired connection, wireless placement, or support for multiple devices?
- Parts and purchase terms: For customization, verify switch and keycap compatibility. Check the warranty, return window, and availability of replacement parts.
Prices and stock vary by country, retailer, and date, so check current local listings rather than assuming a particular model or configuration is available. [Lenovo; Mechalick]
