Start by checking whether a food-scrap collection service actually serves your address and building. Then compare what it accepts, how often it collects, the full cost, container requirements, contamination rules, and where the scraps go. The best fit may be a city program, a private hauler, a building-wide service, or a community drop-off—not necessarily a door-to-door subscription.

Find out what is available at your address

Search your city or county sanitation or public works website for food scraps, organics, or compost collection. Check the provider’s service-area lookup or contact its customer service to confirm your exact address. Eligibility can depend on building size, access, enrollment limits, or a waitlist. If you live in an apartment or other multifamily building, ask the property manager whether collection is already arranged and who is responsible for the shared bins.

Local programs are not interchangeable. Boston’s city page describes free curbside collection for eligible buildings with six or fewer units, waitlisted expansion, and private arrangements for larger buildings; it also lists community drop-off locations. Nashville’s pilot page, last updated June 25, 2025, said it was not accepting new participants. Check current status directly rather than assuming a pilot or waitlist has changed.

If municipal pickup is unavailable, ask your current garbage or yard-waste hauler whether it can add food scraps. Search for community drop-off options as well. Small private pickup services operate in some places without convenient municipal collection, but that does not establish that one serves your locality.

Compare services on the details that affect daily use

Before signing up, get answers in writing where possible. A service that sounds convenient may not fit if its schedule, bin capacity, access rules, or total fees do not work for your household.

Compare Questions to ask Why it matters
Eligibility Does the service cover this exact address? Are there building-size, access, enrollment, or waitlist limits? A provider cannot help if your home or building is excluded.
Full cost What does the recurring fee include? Are bins, replacements, extra pickups, liners, washing, or carry-out charged separately? Is there a minimum term or cancellation condition? Compare the complete cost, not only the advertised rate.
Capacity and schedule How much container space is included and how often is it collected? Can you change the bin size or frequency if your needs change? A small bin or long interval can cause overflow; unnecessary capacity or frequent pickups can add cost.
Materials and liners Are meat, bones, dairy, cooked food, food-soiled paper, yard scraps, or certified compostable products accepted? Which exact liners are allowed? Accepted items and liner rules vary by program.
Contamination and missed service What counts as contamination? Will a bin be left behind or charged a fee? How do you report a missed pickup, and how is it corrected? Clear rules help avoid rejected bins and surprise charges.
Containers and access Are kitchen pails or collection carts supplied? Who washes them? Where do they go, who moves them, and can shared outdoor bins be secured? These details determine whether the routine is practical at home or in a shared building.
Destination and support Where are scraps taken and how are they treated? Does the provider report amounts collected? Is sorting guidance or resident training available? Destination information helps you assess the service, while guidance can reduce sorting mistakes.

Check the accepted-items list and contamination policy

Do not rely on a list from another city, a neighbor’s old routine, or a liner label. Use the current instructions for the exact program you join. Ask specifically about meat and bones, dairy, cooked food, food-soiled paper, yard scraps, and products labeled compostable. Also verify whether the provider requires loose scraps, paper liners, or a particular certified compostable liner.

For example, Boston’s program permits specified certified compostable or paper liners and rejects plastic bags; its guidance says contaminated bins will not be collected. New York City’s curbside rules allow different materials and liner options. These are examples of local variation, not rules to apply outside those programs.

Work out the real cost and service routine

Ask for the recurring charge and every likely extra before enrolling. Check whether the price includes collection, a household or shared container, replacement bins, washing, liners, and carry-out from a building. Ask about fees for extra or missed pickups, changing frequency or capacity, and ending service. These terms are set by the provider; there is no universal pickup price to use as a benchmark.

OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin, 0.75 Gal, Charcoal
  • Convenient size and design for everyday counter-top use
  • Lid flips up for easy filling and flips down to lock in odors
  • Smooth interior walls prevent foods and liquids from building up
  • Contoured bottom and removable lid makes emptying simple
  • Rotating handle for easy transport of waste to outdoor composter

Match the schedule and container size to how much your household produces and where you can store scraps between collections. Ask whether you can adjust service after a trial period or when seasonal volumes change. For multifamily buildings, clarify who moves bins to the pickup point, who maintains them, and how the provider handles odors or unauthorized use.

Vancouver’s local guidance suggests starting at 6 to 10 liters per unit per week for multifamily buildings and about 14 liters per unit per week at full participation. Treat that as a Vancouver planning estimate, not a general household sizing rule; ask your provider what capacity it recommends for your building.

Perfnique 1.3 Gal Kitchen Compost Bin with Lid, Countertop Compost Caddy
  • Reuse your kitchen scraps and coffee grinds into our kitchen compost bin with the plastic inner pail and handle: Just put this small trash can on your kitchen countertop, throw away the food scraps (such as fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, etc.) in it during cooking; 1.3 gallons offers enough space for temporarily collecting your organic kitchen and food waste for several days, without taking up too much space.
  • The plastic inner pail comes out easily, and the little handle on the inner pail is thoughtful to make it a breeze to throw kitchen scraps into your compost tumbler outdoors!

Ask where the scraps go after pickup

Ask the provider directly: “What happens to the food scraps after they’re collected?” Find out the destination and treatment method—such as composting or anaerobic digestion—and whether the provider can report quantities collected or outcomes. A clear answer lets you judge whether the service’s process aligns with your reasons for separating scraps.

Boston’s city page says residential food waste may go to a facility that produces slurry for anaerobic digestion or to a farm for composting. That is a description of Boston’s program, not a guarantee about services elsewhere. Vancouver’s guide also recommends asking haulers about downstream handling and reporting.

Choose the service type that fits your home

  • Municipal curbside service: Check eligibility, enrollment status, accepted items, schedule, and set-out rules on the local government’s current page.
  • Private pickup: Compare total fees, bin capacity, pickup flexibility, contamination handling, and the destination of collected scraps.
  • Building-wide collection: Confirm who pays, maintains and moves the shared containers, and how residents receive sorting instructions.
  • Community drop-off: Check location, hours, accepted materials, container rules, and whether you must bring scraps in a particular way.

Rules can also differ by country. In England, government guidance under the Simpler Recycling requirements calls for weekly, free household food-waste collection, with transitional arrangements possible for some authorities. That policy is specific to England and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere: UK government: Simpler Recycling in England.

Set up only after checking the container rules

Ask whether the service supplies a countertop pail or other indoor container before buying one. Confirm accepted liner types before purchasing liners; a product marketed as compostable may not meet the local program’s rules. Boston mentions countertop containers as one way to manage odors, while New York City permits a labeled, secure-lid curbside bin under its own rules. Follow your provider’s instructions for storage, cleaning, and set-out.
