Choose a local AI agent by checking four things: where every part of its workflow sends data, whether your computer can run the model and context you need, whether it can perform the actions your task requires, and how much setup and permission management you are willing to handle. “Local” is a description of a configured system, not a guarantee that every service involved stays on your device.
What counts as a local AI agent?
A local AI setup has three distinct parts, and the distinction matters when comparing tools:
- Model and inference server: The model generates responses. It may run on your computer through a local server, or on a provider’s hosted service.
- Interface: A chat or desktop app lets you choose a model and start a task.
- Agent tools and permissions: Capabilities such as searching the web, reading files, using a terminal, or controlling desktop apps let the model take action.
Open WebUI, for example, documents connections to local servers such as Ollama, llama.cpp, and vLLM, as well as hosted APIs. It also distinguishes connecting a model provider from connecting an autonomous agent. A tool that runs a local model is not automatically a capable agent, and an agent interface may still use hosted services. Open WebUI’s provider documentation describes the available connection types and their boundaries.
Where does your data go?
Trace the whole workflow, not just the model. Check where inference, document extraction, embeddings, web search, memory, and connected apps run. If you select a cloud model, the prompt and context included with it go to that provider. A local inference endpoint does not make separately configured cloud search, extraction, embeddings, or integrations local. Open WebUI explains these distinctions in its documentation on connecting local and cloud models.

Open Interpreter says that workspace files stay on the machine, while instructions and context needed for a task go to whichever model the active profile uses. It also says additional information may be sent through integrations a user configures, such as email, Telegram, or an MCP server. Its local Ollama or LM Studio profiles support local models, and tasks that do not require the internet can work offline. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its product, not an audit of every possible configuration. See the Open Interpreter desktop FAQ.
Ollama’s privacy policy says the company does not collect, store, transmit, or have access to prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content processed locally. The same policy separately discusses limited device and usage metadata and transient processing for cloud-hosted models. That statement applies to Ollama as described in its policy; it is not a blanket guarantee for every application or integration in a local AI stack. Read Ollama’s privacy policy.
Before using sensitive material, identify each endpoint and ask what it receives. If you need data to remain on the device, confirm that the model and every supporting service are configured locally, and disable or avoid integrations that send information elsewhere.
What hardware do you need?
There is no universal minimum computer specification established for local agents. The requirements depend on the model, context length, and workload. Choose the model and tasks first, then check that model’s current hardware guidance before buying or upgrading a computer.

Open WebUI’s FAQ gives one specific Ollama example: it says Ollama chooses a model’s default context length based on GPU VRAM, and that on GPUs with less than 24 GiB the default is 4,096 tokens. In the same RAG troubleshooting context, Open WebUI recommends raising the context length to 8,192 tokens or more so retrieved material can fit. These figures are vendor guidance for that configuration—not a rule that every local agent needs a 24 GiB GPU or an 8,192-token context. See Open WebUI’s FAQ.
Memory needs also depend on which components you run. Open WebUI says its default local CPU SentenceTransformers all-MiniLM-L6-v2 embedding setup uses roughly 500 MB of RAM per worker in a single-user deployment, and recommends external embeddings for multi-user deployments. That figure describes the embedding component, not the total memory an agent needs. Open WebUI Essentials.
- Write down the model, context length, and tasks you intend to use before estimating hardware.
- Check whether the model’s current guidance specifies GPU memory, system memory, or other requirements.
- Consider a higher-memory computer or graphics card only if the selected workload requires it; do not treat the 24 GiB example as a universal minimum.
Which integrations and actions matter?
Start with what the agent must do, then verify that the software supports those actions and that you can control their permissions. Model compatibility alone does not tell you whether an agent can safely complete a workflow.
Open WebUI documents connections to Ollama, OpenAI-compatible APIs, and Open Responses. It also names llama.cpp, vLLM, LM Studio, LocalAI, Docker Model Runner, and Lemonade as local-server routes. Optional capabilities described in its Essentials guide include web search, knowledge retrieval, memory, code execution, and Open Terminal. Search can use a self-hosted SearXNG backend or commercial search APIs; Open Terminal can run in a Docker sandbox by default or on bare metal when configured. Each choice can affect what runs locally and what information leaves the machine. Provider options and Open WebUI Essentials explain these features.

Open Interpreter’s desktop app can work with files in a selected workspace, operate desktop apps, run scripts, and use shell commands. Desktop control requires operating-system permissions: Accessibility and Screen Recording on macOS, UAC approval on Windows, or permissions appropriate to the Linux environment. Its documentation recommends selecting a workspace; keep the working area bounded rather than casually granting broad access to files. See Open Interpreter’s install instructions and FAQ.
For the workflow you have in mind, check:
- Can it connect to the local model server or hosted provider you plan to use without a custom adapter?
- Does it need file access, terminal commands, browser search, desktop control, memory, or messaging integrations?
- Is each capability built in, separately configured, or dependent on an outside service?
- Can you limit access to the relevant folder or app, and can commands run in a sandbox?
- Will the workflow still work offline if a hosted model or external integration is unavailable?
How much setup and maintenance can you handle?
Ease of use is not just the first launch. Consider installation, model selection, endpoint visibility, permissions, updates, and backups as well as the initial setup.
Desktop-first setup
Open Interpreter’s first-launch flow asks you to choose a workspace folder, select a profile (provider, model, and credentials), and grant required operating-system permissions. Its install documentation lists macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows, and Linux. The exact permission steps differ by operating system. Check the install instructions for your system.
Self-hosted setup
Open WebUI can be deployed with Docker, Kubernetes, pip, or bare metal. That range gives technical users deployment choices but means the setup depends on their comfort with self-hosting. Its Getting Started documentation recommends starting with a model and enabling only the tools and knowledge features needed. Those are the vendor’s setup options, not an independent ease-of-use comparison. Open WebUI Getting Started.

If you are comfortable administering software, deployment control and configurable integrations may matter more than a one-click start.
Does a local AI agent work offline?
It can, if the active model and the rest of the task do not depend on the internet. Open Interpreter says tasks using a local profile can work offline when they do not need a website, API, or hosted model; an online-dependent action cannot complete until connectivity returns. Its install page says voice transcription uses a local speech model after installation. Open WebUI’s FAQ describes local operation without external calls by default when configured with local models. See the Open Interpreter FAQ, install page, and Open WebUI FAQ.
Plan for connectivity when downloading models or setting up optional integrations. A local model also cannot provide live web information on its own; that requires an online source.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- Define the job and sensitivity. Note whether you will use private documents, coding tasks, desktop workflows, online research, or offline work.
- Set your data boundary. Decide whether all inference and supporting services must stay local or whether a hybrid setup is acceptable. Check every endpoint and integration, not only the model label.
- Choose a model before hardware. Check current requirements for the intended model, context length, and workload before buying or upgrading equipment.
- List the actions and controls you need. Verify integrations, folder or app permissions, and sandbox options for the work the agent will perform.
- Compare the ongoing setup. Check supported operating systems, installation route, any account or API requirements, update and backup instructions, and how much command-line work is involved.
- Start with a low-risk trial. Test on non-sensitive files and grant only the permissions needed before connecting personal accounts or apps that can make consequential changes.
