Choose a JavaScript runtime by listing the specific syntax, APIs, TypeScript workflow, dependencies, and deployment environment your project needs, then testing those requirements on the exact runtime versions you could deploy. “Modern” is not a compatibility guarantee: JavaScript language features, host-provided APIs, and TypeScript features have different support boundaries.

First identify what “language feature” means for your project

JavaScript syntax support depends on the runtime’s embedded engine and version. APIs such as file-system or networking interfaces are provided by the runtime host and are a separate compatibility question. Ecma International’s ECMA-419, third edition (June 2025), puts the distinction this way: “The ECMAScript language is defined in terms of a host that provides the runtime environment for the execution of scripts.” ECMA-419, third edition

TypeScript adds another layer. A runtime may strip type annotations, transpile TypeScript syntax into JavaScript, or require a separate compiler. Executing stripped or transformed code does not necessarily type-check it.

  • JavaScript syntax: Name each construct your source uses and establish the minimum runtime version that supports it.
  • Runtime APIs: Identify the host APIs and platform behaviors your application calls.
  • TypeScript or JSX/TSX: Check whether your syntax can be erased, needs code generation, or requires a separate toolchain.
  • Type checking: Decide whether checks must run in the same command or can be a distinct build or CI step.

Compare the TypeScript workflows and compatibility boundaries

Runtime TypeScript and language workflow Compatibility considerations Good fit when
Node.js Built-in TypeScript type stripping is stable in documented releases v24.12.0 and v25.2.0 onward. It removes erasable types but does not type-check. It rejects constructs requiring JavaScript code generation, including value enums, namespaces with runtime code, parameter properties, and import aliases. It ignores tsconfig.json; settings that transform newer syntax to older JavaScript or affect path resolution do not apply to built-in stripping. Node.js TypeScript documentation Check the precise Node version and whether your source uses only erasable TypeScript syntax. Use a separate checker or transformation toolchain if needed. You want the Node.js ecosystem and your code fits the supported syntax, or you already use a compiler or transpiler workflow.
Deno deno run strips TypeScript types and passes JavaScript to V8; that step does not check types. deno check or deno run --check invokes the TypeScript checker. Deno also documents integrated checking, linting, and formatting. Deno TypeScript documentation Deno’s compatibility guide lists support for most Node built-ins, npm packages, Node globals, package.json, CommonJS, optional node_modules layouts, and Node-API native addons under stated conditions. Some APIs are partial, and some packages expect a local node_modules layout. Deno Node compatibility · Deno npm and module resolution You value an integrated TypeScript workflow and have verified the specific Node APIs and packages your project uses.
Bun Bun says it supports TypeScript and JSX without configuration and transpiles files on the fly. Bun runtime documentation Bun’s regularly updated Node compatibility page says it reflects compatibility with Node.js v26 and records implementation status and caveats by module. Check the entries for your required APIs and packages. Bun Node.js compatibility You want its integrated execution and transpilation workflow, and your dependencies pass tests on the Bun version you intend to deploy.

These “good fit” descriptions are decision guidance based on documented capabilities, not evidence that a runtime has been tested with your project.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use a version-specific selection process

  1. Inventory source syntax. List required JavaScript constructs, TypeScript constructs, JSX/TSX, and any TypeScript syntax that generates runtime code. Record the minimum version you expect to support.
  2. Choose where type checking happens. Node’s built-in stripping does not check types; Deno documents separate execution and checking commands; Bun documents on-the-fly transpilation. Decide whether to include a checker in your development, CI, or build workflow. Node.js TypeScript documentation · Deno TypeScript documentation · Bun runtime documentation
  3. Audit dependencies and module behavior. Check ESM and CommonJS expectations, Node built-in APIs, npm packages, native addons, module resolution, and assumptions about node_modules. Treat broad compatibility claims as a starting point, not proof that a particular package works. Deno Node compatibility · Deno npm and module resolution · Bun Node.js compatibility
  4. Confirm the deployment target. Check which runtime versions the target platform makes available, along with permissions and operating-environment constraints. These are specific to your platform and project.
  5. Run the project on each candidate version. Use the same application tests and deployment build you rely on in production. Where useful, compare startup time, throughput, and memory under the same workload; documentation alone cannot establish which runtime performs best for your application.

Interpret compatibility figures narrowly

Deno states that more than 75% of Node.js’s own test suite passes in Deno 2.8. That figure describes Deno’s results against Node.js’s test suite; it is not a claim that 75% of all Node packages or APIs work. Deno Node compatibility

Bun’s compatibility page lists module-specific test results, including 99% for node:dgram, 95% for node:events, and 98% for node:fs on the page accessed October 4, 2026. Those percentages describe the named module test suites, not Bun’s overall compatibility. Bun Node.js compatibility
