Choose a high-yield savings account by comparing its current APY and rate terms with fees, balance requirements, access, and deposit insurance—not by picking the largest rate in an ad. A savings APY is generally variable, so it describes the yield calculation at the time it is quoted, not a rate guaranteed to last a year. If you can leave the money untouched for a set period, compare CDs as a separate option and weigh their term and early-withdrawal penalty against the value of access.

How to compare high-yield savings accounts

Use the same checklist for every account, and write down the date you checked each offer. Federal disclosure rules cover savings and other deposit accounts, including disclosures of APY, interest rates, minimum-balance requirements, account terms, and fees. The CFPB’s Regulation DD overview says it was most recently amended on April 19, 2023.

Current APY, rate type, and promotional terms

Record the APY and identify whether the rate is variable or promotional. If an introductory rate applies, find out how long it lasts and what rate applies afterward. For a variable-rate introductory offer, the APY calculation assumes the introductory rate lasts for its stated term, then uses the non-introductory rate that would otherwise have applied for the remainder of the year. That calculation does not promise that either rate will remain in place. See the CFPB’s Appendix A to Regulation DD.

Balance tiers and qualifications

Check whether the advertised APY applies to the whole balance or only to a portion, and whether the rate changes at different balance levels. Also look for minimum opening deposits, minimum balances, or other qualifications. Regulation DD requires APY disclosures for applicable balance tiers, so compare the rate that would apply to the amount you actually plan to deposit.

Fees and waiver conditions

Compare monthly maintenance fees and the precise conditions for avoiding them. A waiver might depend on maintaining a minimum balance or arranging direct deposit; a high APY may not compensate for a fee if you are unlikely to meet the condition. The CFPB says institutions must disclose the fee and how to avoid it when the account is opened. Its September 13, 2024 explanation of bank fees describes common maintenance-fee waivers.

Access and account mechanics

Confirm how deposits and withdrawals work, how long transfers take, whether transactions are limited, and whether the institution’s service model suits you. Do not assume every account labeled “savings” has the same access rules. For example, the CFPB notes that money market deposit accounts may limit some check, debit-card, or electronic transactions and may require a minimum deposit.

Deposit insurance and ownership

Check whether the provider is a bank or credit union, then consider how your ownership category and other deposits at the same institution affect coverage. The CFPB states that bank and credit-union money market accounts are insured up to $250,000 per owner category, subject to applicable rules; verify your own coverage with the FDIC or NCUA tools linked from its money market account guidance. Do not treat an investment product as an insured deposit account.

What happens to your APY when interest rates change?

A variable APY can move during the time you hold the account. Under the CFPB’s calculation rule for a variable-rate account without an introductory premium or discount, the advertised APY is calculated using the initial interest rate and assuming that rate stays unchanged for a year. It is a standardized comparison figure, not evidence that the bank will pay that rate for the next 12 months.

The reviewed Regulation DD provision says institutions do not have to provide notice under that section when the interest rate and corresponding APY change on a variable-rate account. Do not assume you will receive advance warning of a decrease. The CFPB page also lists a petition requesting timely disclosure of variable-rate changes; a petition is not an adopted rule. Check the account’s current rate and terms before opening and periodically afterward, especially after a broad rate move or when the yield no longer suits your needs. The relevant provision is in Regulation DD, section 1030.9.

Which savings alternative fits your need for access?

These products differ in whether they are deposits or investments, how easily you can reach the money, and what terms deserve attention.

Option Rate behavior Access What to compare
High-yield savings account Variable rates can change; the current APY is not a year-long guarantee. Designed for savings access, but verify the provider’s transfer and withdrawal terms. APY and check date, promotion terms, tiers, minimums, fees, access, and insurance.
Money market deposit account Deposit-account rates and terms vary by institution. May limit some checks, debit-card use, or electronic transactions; a minimum deposit may apply. APY, transaction limits, minimum deposit, fees, and FDIC or NCUA coverage.
Certificate of deposit (CD) Compare the rate for the specific term. Money is generally committed for the term; withdrawing early typically carries a penalty. Term, rate, early-withdrawal penalty, maturity date, and insurance.
Money market mutual fund Investment returns and terms are product-specific. Access depends on the fund; do not assume it is an insured savings account. Investment risks and protections require separate evaluation.

The CFPB distinguishes a money market mutual fund from a bank or credit-union money market deposit account: a mutual fund is an investment, even if it offers check-writing. See the CFPB’s money market account guidance. For CDs, compare the term, rate, and early-withdrawal penalty with the date you expect to need the money; the CFPB explains these factors in its CD guidance.

A practical decision process

  1. Set the access requirement. Decide whether you need to withdraw or transfer the money freely, or whether you can commit it until a known date.
  2. Compare like with like. For each savings account, note its APY and check date, rate type, promotion end date, applicable balance tier, and minimums.
  3. Calculate whether the terms work for you. Include fees and the conditions needed to waive them, along with transfer timing and transaction limits.
  4. Verify the provider and coverage. Confirm the account is a deposit account at a bank or credit union and check coverage based on your ownership category and other deposits.
  5. Consider a CD only if the term fits. Compare its rate and maturity date with the penalty for early withdrawal and the flexibility of a savings account.
  6. Recheck after opening. Since a variable rate may change, periodically look at the current APY and account terms rather than treating the opening rate as permanent.
