For camping, emergencies, and everyday carry, also check its power options, water and impact resistance, and whether its size and controls suit how you will carry and use it.
What lumens tell you—and what they don’t
Lumens measure light output, but they do not tell you how the beam is shaped or how far it will usefully reach. A broad flood beam spreads light over a nearby area; a focused spot beam concentrates it farther ahead. An adjustable beam can serve both purposes. REI’s flashlight guide also describes beam distance as the distance at which illumination falls to the equivalent of a full moon.
That distinction matters in practice: a camp chore or walk around a tent benefits from broad coverage, while checking a route or spotting something farther away calls for a more focused beam. Compare the beam and distance alongside the lumen rating rather than assuming that a higher number will automatically make a light more useful.
Choose brightness for the job, then check runtime
Look at the flashlight’s full set of modes and identify the one you are likely to use most. A maximum setting can be a brief turbo burst, not a sustainable everyday or camp setting. REI lists the Coast TX300R at 3,000 lumens on turbo for 40 seconds, with separate high, medium, low, and MoonGlow settings. That specification is a useful reminder to compare output with runtime at the same setting.

REI describes runtime as the time until output falls to 10% of rated output under its stated basis. When a manufacturer provides an output/runtime graph, it can show how brightness changes over time better than a single runtime figure. High output generally uses battery power faster, so a lower mode may be the more relevant measure for an evening at camp or an extended outage.
For orientation, REI’s guide suggests 160–400 lumens and up to 100 meters for camping, hiking, and backpacking, and 1–250 lumens and up to 80 meters for everyday and leisure activities in dim conditions. These are REI’s illustrative ranges, not universal minimums, guarantees, or a substitute for checking a light’s beam and setting-specific runtime.

Match the power source to your plans
Check what battery is included, how it charges, whether replacements are easy to find, and whether the flashlight accepts a compatible backup. A rechargeable light can reduce the need to carry disposable batteries, while replaceable or backup options can be useful when charging is unavailable. Do not assume batteries are interchangeable: confirm the exact model’s compatibility before buying spares.
For example, REI lists the Coast HX5R with a USB-C rechargeable battery and AA backup compatibility. The Fenix LD30 listing specifies a rechargeable 18650 battery. These retailer specifications illustrate different power approaches; check the current product listing or manufacturer documentation for the model you are considering.

Check durability, handling, and carry comfort
Water and dust resistance, impact resistance, dimensions, and weight should fit the conditions you expect. An IP rating describes ingress protection, but compare the actual rating rather than treating all water-resistant flashlights as equivalent. Impact specifications also differ: REI lists the HX5R at IP54 with 1.5-meter impact resistance, and the LD30 at IPX8 with 1-meter impact resistance. Those figures describe different specifications, not a tested ranking of which light is tougher overall.
For everyday carry, consider whether the light fits comfortably in a pocket or bag and whether its controls are easy to operate one-handed. For camping or emergency storage, check that it can be found and switched on quickly, including with gloves if that matters. A control that can activate accidentally inside a pack may also be inconvenient.

Use ratings as a comparison aid, not a guarantee
REI says ANSI/NEMA FL1 standards were introduced in 2009 to help flashlight models be tested and rated similarly. The guide also notes that compliance is voluntary and manufacturers conduct their own testing. FL1-style figures can make comparisons more consistent, but they do not replace checking the method, mode, and conditions behind a particular specification.

- Beam: Choose flood for nearby tasks, spot for longer-distance visibility, or adjustable if both matter.
- Output: Compare useful modes, not only the maximum lumen figure.
- Runtime: Check how long the intended setting lasts and look for an output/runtime graph.
- Power: Confirm battery type, charging method, replacement availability, and compatible backup options.
- Durability: Match water, dust, and impact specifications to likely conditions.
- Carry and controls: Consider size, weight, grip, one-handed operation, glove use, and accidental activation.
REI’s current retailer listings offer examples of why these comparisons matter. The HX5R combines an 800-lumen maximum, four modes, an adjustable flood/spot beam, USB-C charging with AA backup compatibility, and the listed resistance specifications above. The LD30 lists a 1,600-lumen maximum, five modes, and setting-specific runtimes ranging from 1 hour 30 minutes on turbo to 70 hours 30 minutes on eco. These are retailer-listed specifications, not independent test results; verify current details and battery compatibility with the manufacturer or current listing.
