High impedance can make voltage capability especially important, but it does not automatically mean you need a separate or expensive amplifier. Match the headphones’ impedance and sensitivity to the clean output your source or amplifier can deliver at that load, then check the connection, gain, output impedance, and performance at your intended listening level.
Do high-impedance headphones need an amplifier?
Not necessarily. A high-impedance headphone may need more voltage than a portable source can provide to reach a desired listening level, but impedance alone cannot tell you whether your current source is inadequate. Sensitivity matters too: it describes how loud the headphone gets for a given electrical input.
For example, Sennheiser lists the HD 600 at 300 ohms and 97 dB SPL at 1 V. Those figures make it a useful illustration of why you should consider both impedance and voltage capability, not a rule that every 300-ohm headphone requires a separate amp. Sennheiser HD 600 specifications.
Start by checking whether your existing source reaches your normal listening level without audible strain or distortion. If it does, a new amplifier may not be necessary. If it cannot, or if you want more clean headroom, compare amplifiers by their output at the headphone’s impedance.

What headphone and source specifications should you collect?
Before comparing amplifiers, note the headphone’s impedance and sensitivity, the output connections available on your current source, and whether you can reach your usual volume cleanly. Sensitivity may be specified relative to voltage or power, so compare figures only when you understand their stated basis.
- Impedance: Use the headphone’s nominal rating as the load to look for in amplifier specifications.
- Sensitivity: Use it with impedance to judge how much output may be needed for your desired level.
- Source output: Check whether your phone, computer, DAC, or existing amplifier provides enough clean output for that load.
- Use and connections: Identify required inputs, desktop or portable use, and whether your headphone cable can connect to the amplifier output you plan to use.
A separate DAC is not automatically part of the solution. First establish whether the existing source is the limitation and whether a headphone amplifier can connect to it.

How to read amplifier power and voltage ratings
Look for voltage or power specified at the headphone’s impedance, and for the output connection you will actually use. A maximum rating measured at a different load or on a different connector may not describe the output available to your headphones.
Manufacturer manuals illustrate why the load and connection matter. Schiit lists the Jotunheim at 900 mW balanced and 350 mW single-ended into 300 ohms, with output impedance below 0.1 ohms. These are specifications for that product as described in its Jotunheim owner’s manual, not a universal target for a 300-ohm headphone.

Headphones.com’s 2020 review reported the iFi ZEN CAN at 7.6 V / 196 mW single-ended and 15.1 V / 756 mW balanced into 300 ohms. Because these figures come from an older review rather than current manufacturer documentation, verify the exact model and its current specifications before relying on them. More maximum power is not automatically a meaningful improvement. A doubling of power corresponds to a 3 dB increase, so a large wattage difference can translate into a comparatively modest level change. Maximum power is also a limit, not proof that the amplifier stays clean at every lower output. The headphone amplifier measurement guide recommends considering distortion across output levels and loads.

How gain, output impedance, and distortion affect the match
Gain and volume control
Gain affects how much input signal is needed to reach a given output. A higher-gain setting can help when a source’s signal is low, but excess gain may make the usable volume range less convenient. Prefer an amplifier with a gain setting that lets you reach your usual level with useful control remaining, rather than choosing the highest gain by default.
Output impedance
Check the amplifier’s output impedance as well as its power rating. It can vary by design and setting: Schiit lists the Jotunheim below 0.1 ohms, while the Valhalla 2 manual specifies 3.5 ohms in low gain and 14 ohms in high gain. Those differences are reasons to compare actual specifications, not grounds for assuming one design will always sound better. Schiit Valhalla 2 owner’s manual.

Clean output at your listening level
Where measurements are available, look for distortion behavior at the load and output level you expect to use. A headline maximum-power figure does not, by itself, show how cleanly an amplifier performs below or near that limit.

Quick Recap
| Example | Published figures relevant to a 300-ohm load | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser HD 600 | 300 ohms; 97 dB SPL at 1 V, per the product listing | Use sensitivity alongside impedance when judging source capability. Manufacturer listing. |
| Schiit Jotunheim | 900 mW balanced; 350 mW single-ended; output impedance below 0.1 ohms, per the owner’s manual | Output differs by connection. Compare the rating for the connector you can use. Owner’s manual. |
| Schiit Valhalla 2 | 700 mW maximum at 300 ohms; output impedance 3.5 ohms in low gain and 14 ohms in high gain, per the owner’s manual | The manual also notes: “A small amount of hum is normal in many tube amps, especially with very sensitive headphones on hi gain.” Tube amplification is not required simply because headphones have high impedance. | iFi ZEN CAN | 7.6 V / 196 mW single-ended; 15.1 V / 756 mW balanced at 300 ohms, as reported by Headphones.com in a 2020 review | Verify current model details and manufacturer specifications; the figures are from the cited review. 2020 review. |
A practical amplifier-selection checklist
- Check the headphone: Record its impedance and sensitivity, including the basis used for the sensitivity figure.
- Assess your current source: Determine whether it reaches your normal listening level cleanly before adding equipment.
- Compare output at the load: Find the amplifier’s voltage or power specification at the headphone’s impedance, not just its headline maximum.
- Match the connection: Confirm that the source input and headphone output suit your equipment; use the rating for the connection you will actually use. Balanced output is not inherently required.
- Check control and performance: Review gain options, output impedance, and distortion measurements at relevant output levels and loads where available.
- Confirm practical fit: Consider desktop or portable use, required inputs, size, and whether a DAC is actually needed. Verify current specifications for the exact revision with the manufacturer.
