For an occasional hole in brick or masonry, a hammer drill adds a forward hammering action to ordinary rotation and is better suited than a standard drill. For repeated anchor holes, light chiseling, or more demanding concrete work, compare an SDS-plus rotary hammer; for heavy drilling and chiseling, look at SDS-max. Match the tool to the material, hole diameter, workload, chuck and bit system, and the exact model’s published capacity—not motor power alone.

What a hammer drill does—and what it does not

A standard drill rotates a bit. A hammer drill rotates it while adding forward hammer motion to help it work through resistant masonry. DEWALT Support describes the distinction this way: “A hammer drill has this function but also has a ‘hammer’ feature that moves the drill bit in a forward motion as well.” DEWALT Support’s explanation was updated November 24, 2025.

That makes a hammer drill a sensible option for occasional masonry drilling compared with a plain drill, but it does not establish a universal hole-size limit or a frequency threshold that applies to every model. Check the manufacturer’s stated capacity for the specific tool and material.

Which tool fits the job?

Tool type Best fit What to check
Standard drill/driver Ordinary drilling where the material does not call for hammer action. Whether the model and bit are rated for the material and hole size.
Hammer drill Occasional drilling in masonry where added hammer action is useful. Its stated masonry capacity, chuck and compatible bit shank.
SDS-plus rotary hammer Light-to-medium-duty concrete and masonry work, including anchor holes and light chiseling. Concrete capacity, operating modes, weight, power source and SDS-plus accessories.
SDS-max rotary hammer Heavier concrete and masonry drilling or chiseling, such as oversized anchor holes or breaking slabs and walls. The exact model’s rated capacity and modes; the SDS-max system is not interchangeable with SDS-plus.

These are manufacturer-described tool categories, not a universal ranking or a precise crossover rule. Bosch lists SDS-plus rotary hammers for light-to-medium-duty concrete and masonry work, with corded and 18V cordless models; modes may include rotary drilling, hammer drilling and chiseling. Bosch describes SDS-max as its heavy-duty system and gives a category capacity range of 1-9/16 to 2 inches, but that range is not a guarantee for every SDS-max model. See Bosch’s SDS-plus category and SDS-max category.

How to choose for your project

1. Start with the material and workload

Separate an occasional hole in brick or masonry from repeated concrete drilling, larger holes, or chiseling. A hammer drill may suit the first situation; an SDS-plus rotary hammer is worth comparing for light-to-medium-duty concrete and masonry work, while SDS-max is intended for heavier work. The cited manufacturer information does not define a universal number of holes or hole size at which you must move up a category.

2. Check the required hole diameter against the model

Find the manufacturer’s stated capacity for the material and application. Do not infer a safe or suitable hole diameter from motor amperage, impact energy, or a tool-class label alone.

  • Dewalt DCD798B 20V MAX Brushless 1/2 in. Cordless Hammer Drill Driver (Tool Only)

For example, Bosch lists the GBH2-26 with a maximum concrete hole diameter of 1 inch and an optimal concrete capacity range of 3/16–5/8 inch. Those are Bosch’s specifications for that model, not independent test results or a recommendation for every project. The same product page lists an 8.0 amp motor, 2.0 ft-lb EPTA impact energy, three operating modes, an SDS-plus chuck and a weight of 6.4 pounds. Review the GBH2-26 product specifications as a model-specific example, not a blanket winner.

3. Confirm the chuck and bit system

The tool and bit must have matching shanks. Standard round-shank bits used in a three-jaw chuck are not the same fit as SDS bits. Bosch identifies SDS-plus with a 10 mm shank and SDS-max with an 18 mm shank; the systems are not interchangeable. A bit being suitable for concrete does not make it compatible with every drill.

The charger’s indicator light is green when connected to power, red during charging, and green again when fully charged
  • Drill Through Different Materials in 3 Drilling Modes: This hammer drill features a 20-stage adjustable clutch and 3 operating modes—screwdriver, drilling, and hammer drilling—to meet diverse application needs. Higher torque ring values indicate greater torque output, suitable for materials or screw types of varying hardness. Torque settings 1-6 work well for fastening screws into soft materials like plastic and wood; Gears 8-15 drill through metal and red brick; Gears 16-20 drill through lightweight concrete. This battery-powered concrete drill can bore 25mm diameter holes through 40mm thick steel plates, drill 100mm thick wood, and drill 80mm thick bricks and lightweight concrete
  • Low & High Speed Settings: This brushless hammer drill has 2 speed settings. The L speed (0-700RPM) is suitable for soft materials, or tightening self-tapping screws and small screws. Set the torque to a low level and monitor speed closely—excessive speed may damage original accessories. The H speed (0-2300RPM) works for hard materials like metal and concrete, or tightening hex screws and large bolts, where torque can be set higher. Pressing the speed trigger switch deeper increases the impact drill’s rotation speed. This dual-speed adjustment accurately meets various task needs while effectively preventing over-driving and material damage
  • Ergonomic Design: This electric drill has a 1/2-inch (13mm) self-locking metal chuck for quick bit changes, securely gripping bits without slipping—more durable than plastic chucks and minimizing damage. A bright LED work light illuminates your task area at all times. It includes an easy-to-install left auxiliary handle for enhanced grip comfort and stability, delivering a better user use. Ensure the handle is firmly fastened to the machine to prevent detachment during operation. Additionally, a flexible shaft helps you tackle jobs in tight spaces easily. The single brushless drill with battery weigh only 4.12lbs/1.87kg, allowing for effortless one-handed operation

DEWALT Support notes that the special slot on an SDS bit provides greater holding power than a round-shank bit in a standard three-jaw chuck. That is an explanation of the fitting system, not evidence that an SDS bit can be used in a regular chuck. See DEWALT’s SDS-bit explanation and Bosch’s SDS-plus and SDS-max descriptions.

4. Decide whether you need drilling, hammer drilling, or chiseling

Do not assume every tool in a category has the same modes. Check the exact model for drilling-only, hammer drilling and chiseling functions. Chiseling can matter for jobs such as removing material or breaking concrete; it is not simply another name for drilling.

5. Balance power source and handling

Corded and cordless options exist in Bosch’s SDS-plus and SDS-max ranges. Consider access to an existing battery platform, whether a cord is practical at the work location, and the tool’s weight and shape for the job. A lighter or cordless tool may be easier to position, but the published capacity and intended use still need to fit the work.

Choose a masonry bit that matches both tool and material

For stone, concrete, cement, brick and cinder block, Bosch’s rotary-hammer manual specifies carbide-tipped bits. It identifies carbide-tipped SDS-plus bits for cinder block, mortar, common brick and soft stone, and says the amount of pressure required depends on the material. Follow the manual for the exact tool and bit rather than assuming more force is always better. Bosch rotary-hammer manual.

One narrowly compatible conversion attachment

A conversion attachment should not be treated as a universal way to give any drill hammer-drilling capability. Bosch’s GFA12-H is designed for its 12V Max Flexiclick drill/driver system and names the GSR12V-300FC and GSR12V-140FC as compatible models. Bosch states that the GSR12V-300FC with the attachment can drill concrete up to 3/8 inch in diameter. That figure and compatibility apply to this specified combination; check Bosch’s GFA12-H product page before considering it.
