To check whether a graphics card will fit and work in your PC, look up the exact card model—not just its GPU family—and compare its length, height, thickness, power requirements, and connectors with your case and power supply. Include space for cooling hardware and power cables, not only the bare card.

1. Find the exact card’s dimensions

Graphics cards built around the same GPU can differ in size and power connections. NVIDIA cautions that “Graphics card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer. Please refer to manufacturer specifications for add-in-card models.” Check the specifications for the particular brand, model, and revision you plan to buy.

For NVIDIA reference-card specifications, its GeForce comparison page lists length, width, slot size, total graphics power, required system power, and connectors. It also identifies many partner-card dimensions as varying by manufacturer. For a partner card, use that card maker’s own specification page.

2. Compare the card with your case

Find the case maker’s maximum GPU clearance and compare it with the card’s published dimensions. Check the case’s actual configuration too: a front radiator, fan, or drive cage may reduce the space available compared with the headline clearance figure.

  • Length: Compare the card’s length with the space from the rear expansion slots to the nearest obstruction at the front of the case.
  • Height: Check whether the card and its power connector will clear the side panel. Card makers may use “width” or “height” differently, so use the manufacturer’s diagram and measurements.
  • Thickness: Check how many expansion slots the card occupies and whether it leaves room for other installed cards.
  • Cable room: Add the space needed to connect and route the power cable, including the bend or clearance specified by the card or cable maker.

As examples of model-specific dimensions, NVIDIA lists the RTX 4090 Founders Edition at 12 inches (304 mm) long by 5.4 inches (137 mm) wide and 3 slots, with 1.4 inches (36 mm) of additional space to plan for power cables. Its RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition is listed at 9.6 inches (244 mm) by 3.9 inches (98 mm), 2 slots, and also calls for 1.4 inches (36 mm) of additional cable space. These figures describe those Founders Edition cards; they are not universal clearances for every card using those GPUs. See NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 guidance and RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 guidance.

3. Check slot space and airflow

A card can fit in length and still crowd neighboring hardware or restrict airflow. Compare its slot thickness with the open space around the motherboard’s expansion slots, taking into account any other card you intend to install. NVIDIA says reserving clearance around the graphics card equivalent to an unused expansion slot will typically improve airflow. Treat that as an airflow recommendation, not a universal physical-fit rule.

4. Check the power supply and cables

Read the exact card’s requirements and compare them with both the PSU’s rated wattage and the connectors available from that PSU. A manufacturer’s minimum system-power recommendation applies to that specific card and may depend on the rest of the system; it is not a guarantee that every PSU with that rating will work in every build.

For example, NVIDIA specifies a minimum system power of 850 W for the RTX 4090 Founders Edition and notes that a higher rating may be needed depending on system configuration. Its guidance lists either three PCIe 8-pin cables feeding the included adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 power cable rated for 450 W or greater. Those instructions apply to that Founders Edition; follow the requirements and supplied-adapter instructions for the exact card you are considering.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
  • Confirm the PSU has the connector type and number the card requires, or that the card maker’s specified adapter can be used with the cables you have.
  • Check that the PSU’s available cables are the appropriate ones; do not assume a connector will be available just because the PSU has enough rated wattage.
  • Allow the cable clearance specified by the card or cable maker when checking fit against the case side panel.

5. Make a pre-purchase compatibility check

  1. Identify the exact GPU card model and revision. Use its manufacturer’s product specification, not just the name of the GPU family.
  2. Record its dimensions, slot thickness, power recommendation, and connector requirements. Check whether an adapter is included and what cables it requires.
  3. Check the case’s GPU clearance in your intended layout. Account for front fans, radiators, drive cages, other cards, and cable-bending space.
  4. Check the PSU label and its actual available cables. Compare them with the exact card’s power instructions, considering the rest of the system.
  5. Verify the physical clearances before ordering. If a dimension or cable requirement is unclear, confirm it with the case or card maker rather than assuming a GPU-family specification applies.

The published NVIDIA dimensions and power figures above are manufacturer specifications, not independent fit tests. Compatibility depends on the specific card, PSU, and case configuration.
