Then weigh ray tracing and upscaling support, and verify that the exact card fits your case and power supply and suits your monitor’s refresh rate.
1. Set your 1440p target
Start with the games you play and the experience you want. A competitive player prioritizing high frame rates may value a different balance than someone who prefers demanding visual settings or ray tracing. Note your monitor’s refresh rate, too: a faster card can render more frames than a 60 Hz display can show.
- List your most-played games, including any especially demanding titles.
- Decide whether you prioritize frame rate, image quality, ray tracing, or a mix.
- Check the refresh rate of your 2560×1440 monitor and whether you plan to keep it.
AMD’s 1440p buying guidance names video memory, compute units, performance per dollar, and upscaling as factors to consider; treat that as manufacturer guidance, then verify performance against independent game testing. AMD’s 1440p graphics-card guidance
2. Compare real 1440p performance and current price
Use a repeatable benchmark suite, then inspect the individual games closest to your own. A product’s tier or specification-sheet number does not tell you how it performs in every game. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy reports a 1440p Ultra raster table separately from a ray-tracing table. Its overall ranking covers 19 games and uses equal-weight geometric means; it excludes upscaling and frame-generation results from its direct performance table. That makes the comparison useful, but not a prediction for every game, system, or setting. Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy

In Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 US-dollar overall comparison, the RTX 5070 averaged 74.0 FPS at a $659 median street price, compared with its $549 MSRP. The RX 9070 averaged 74.8 FPS at a $634 median street price, against a $549 MSRP. The RX 9070 XT averaged 85.3 FPS at a $759 median street price, against a $599 MSRP. These are dated test-suite and market snapshots, not guaranteed results or current offers; check prices in your region and the exact card variant before buying.
Do not mix those overall figures with the hierarchy’s separate raster-only table. In that 1440p Ultra raster result, the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 are each listed at 104.0 FPS, while the RX 9070 XT is listed at 116.5 FPS. The two tables measure different comparisons, so use each within its own context.
Calculate value at the price you can actually pay
For a simple raster-value check, divide the current price by the benchmark FPS for the same test and settings. A lower price per frame can indicate better value, but only if the benchmark reflects your games and you are comparing like with like. For a mixed game library, compare several relevant titles rather than allowing one average to make the decision for you.

MSRP is a reference point, not a promise of availability or a reliable measure of today’s value. Street prices vary by date, region, retailer, and specific partner-card model. A faster card may still be the poorer purchase if its local premium is too large for the performance you gain.

3. Separate raster performance, ray tracing, and frame-generation features
Native rasterization, ray tracing, and upscaling or frame generation answer different questions. If you mostly play without ray tracing, compare raster results and price per frame. If ray tracing matters, examine the separate ray-tracing results; the raster ranking may not carry over. If you plan to use upscaling or frame generation, check whether your particular games support the feature and whether you like its image quality.
Tom’s Hardware omits upscaling and frame-generation results from its direct hierarchy to keep performance comparisons directly comparable, noting that DLSS, FSR, and XeSS differ in image quality. Generated frames are not the same as frames rendered natively by the GPU, so do not treat a frame-generation figure as native rendering performance. Tom’s Hardware’s methodology and results

4. Treat VRAM as one part of the decision
Video memory stores game assets such as textures and shaders. Capacity matters, particularly when games and settings call for more memory, but it is not a stand-alone performance ranking. Compare it alongside measured GPU speed, your intended settings, and the games you actually play.
AMD lists 16 GB of GDDR6 for the RX 9070 XT; NVIDIA lists 12 GB of GDDR7 for the RTX 5070. Those capacities are useful to know, but the different memory types and capacities do not by themselves establish which card is faster or better value. Before ordering, check the specification for the exact partner card—not only the GPU family. Board makers can use different dimensions and cooling designs, and the physical requirements of a specific card can differ from reference documentation.
Power supply and cables
NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 reference documentation specifies a 650 W minimum system power rating and either at least two PCIe 8-pin cables with the supplied adapter or a PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated at 360 W or greater. NVIDIA notes that specifications may vary by add-in-card maker, so confirm the exact SKU’s requirements. RTX 5070 family specifications · NVIDIA RTX 5070 user guide

AMD recommends a minimum 750 W PSU for the RX 9070 XT; its listed typical board power is 304 W and its power connectors are two 8-pin connectors. These are manufacturer specifications, not a claim that every system draws the same amount of power. Check your PSU model, its available cabling, and the exact card maker’s recommendation. Card dimensions, cooling, and airflow
NVIDIA’s reference RTX 5070 clearance envelope is 244 × 112 × 41 mm. Use the retailer listing and partner manufacturer’s specifications to confirm the dimensions of the card you intend to buy, then compare them with your case’s available GPU space. Also consider whether the card’s cooling design and your case airflow suit your system. NVIDIA RTX 5070 user guide
Monitor refresh rate and outputs
A 60 Hz fixed-refresh monitor can prevent you from seeing all the frames a faster GPU produces, according to Tom’s Hardware. That does not mean you must buy a new monitor; it means the monitor’s refresh rate should factor into whether the card will deliver the experience you want. Confirm the exact card’s display outputs against your monitor’s available connections. Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy
6. Match the card to your priorities
These cards occupy different positions in the cited October 2026 comparison, but none is a universal winner. Recheck current local prices and game-specific testing before choosing.
| Card | What the cited evidence indicates | What to verify for your build |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Radeon RX 9070 | Close to the RTX 5070 in Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 overall 1440p comparison; AMD lists 16 GB GDDR6. | Current price versus the RTX 5070, your ray-tracing and game mix, and the exact card’s power, cooling, and dimensions. |
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 | Similar overall average to the RX 9070 in that comparison; NVIDIA lists 12 GB GDDR7 and DLSS 4 features. | Current street price, ray-tracing performance, support for desired features in your games, and exact PSU and case fit. |
| AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT | Higher 1440p average than the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 in the cited suite; AMD lists 16 GB GDDR6. | Whether the price premium is worthwhile in your games, the 750 W PSU recommendation, and the exact card’s dimensions and cooling. |
For any model, compare the games and settings you care about, raster and ray-tracing results separately, current price per frame, memory capacity, supported features, power and connectors, physical fit, cooling, display outputs, and monitor refresh rate. Buy based on the trade-offs that matter to you—not a single league-table position.
