If GitHub Copilot blocks a model or you hit a usage limit, first identify your plan, the Copilot client you are using, your billing model, and—if your account is managed—your organization’s model policy. Then try Auto or another model available to your plan and client. An upgrade can change your personal entitlement, but it cannot necessarily override an administrator’s restriction.
Start by identifying what is actually blocked
A missing model and an exhausted allowance are different problems. Availability can depend on your plan, the Copilot surface or client, administrator settings, and changes to GitHub’s supported-model roster. A model available in one Copilot client may not appear in another. GitHub explains model and client availability in its models overview.
- Note the exact message and location. Record whether the issue occurs in Copilot Chat, an IDE, the CLI, or another Copilot surface. This helps distinguish a client limitation from an account-wide restriction.
- Check your plan and account type. Establish whether the subscription is individual or managed through a Business or Enterprise organization.
- Determine which billing system applies. GitHub changed most users from request-based billing to usage-based billing on June 1, 2026. Legacy premium-request rules apply only to qualifying accounts that remained on that system.
- Check the live model list and policy. A model might be retired, unsupported in your client, or disabled by an organization administrator.
GitHub’s supported-model list changes over time. For example, the page’s 2026 listing included retirements effective October 2, 2026. Treat that as an illustration of roster changes, not as a claim that any particular model is currently selectable.
Choose a model for the task, not its name
When several models are available, match the model’s capabilities and resource use to the work. GitHub says models differ in latency, reasoning ability, and context capacity, and that model choice affects speed, cost, and quality. Its model overview is the place to check the current options and supported surfaces.

- For a straightforward, small task: Favor a suitable, readily available model rather than using a more capable option by default.
- For multi-step reasoning or a difficult debugging problem: Choose an available model whose reasoning strengths fit the task.
- For a large codebase or lengthy conversation: Consider context capacity, while remembering that model availability depends on your plan and client.
- When you do not want to choose manually: Use Auto if it is offered. GitHub says Auto routes a request to an appropriate supported model based on task complexity and real-time availability.
GitHub’s access documentation says Copilot Free and Copilot Student users have access only to Auto model selection. Individual users generally do not configure model access themselves, but their plan and client still affect which options appear. See Configuring access to AI models in GitHub Copilot.
If a model is missing, check client support and organization policy
For an individual account, compare the model shown in your client with GitHub’s current supported-model documentation. For a Business or Enterprise account, an administrator may have disabled that model or set a restricted list. In those cases, switching plans yourself may not restore access: ask the organization owner or administrator to review model access under GitHub’s model access settings.

Business and Enterprise accounts may also distinguish base models from long-term support (LTS) models. GitHub describes LTS models as supported for one year from their designation date; the designated model can change, so check the current base and LTS model guidance rather than relying on an old model name.
- One model is unavailable: Check whether its provider supports it in your client and whether GitHub still lists it as supported.
- Several models from different providers are unavailable: Check GitHub Status or contact GitHub Support, as GitHub recommends in its supported-model guidance.
Understand whether your limit is legacy or usage-based
GitHub says that as of June 1, 2026, it replaced request-based billing with usage-based billing for most users. Under usage-based billing, an interaction’s cost depends on the model and the number of tokens consumed. The legacy request system remains relevant to certain existing annual Pro and Pro+ subscribers who stayed on it. See GitHub’s billing-change explanation.

That distinction matters because old premium-request counts, model multipliers, and exhaustion advice are not universal current limits. Do not use a legacy request count to estimate usage-based billing. Check the billing and usage details for your account and the current plan documentation instead.
If you are still on legacy premium-request billing
GitHub’s legacy guidance says premium-request counters reset on the first of each month at 00:00:00 UTC. For users who have exhausted the allowance, GitHub says included models can remain usable for the rest of the month, though rate limiting and variable response times may apply. If you are eligible for additional usage or a plan change, check the account’s current controls and terms before relying on a published allowance. GitHub’s plan guide retrieved October 4, 2026 lists legacy figures alongside the billing transition; those figures should not be treated as current usage-based entitlements for all users. An individual plan change can affect personal entitlements, but it will not necessarily remove a Business or Enterprise policy restriction. Before upgrading, establish whether the problem is a depleted personal allowance, a model unsupported in your client, or an administrator-controlled block. For a managed account, resolve the organization-policy question with its administrator first.
