For most people in China, mobile is the easiest starting point if they already own a capable smartphone and the games they want are available for it. But market share is not a personal recommendation: choose by the games you want, the devices you already own, how you prefer to play, and whether the specific game and service work for your region.
What the China gaming market says—and what it does not
China’s domestic game market recorded RMB 350.789 billion in sales revenue and 683 million users in 2025, according to the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association (CADPA). Mobile accounted for 73.29% of domestic revenue, while client games—primarily PC client games—accounted for 22.28%. Web games made up 1.23%; the remaining share includes other categories and should not be treated as console revenue.
In the same 2025 report, domestic mobile-game revenue was RMB 257.076 billion, up 7.92% year over year. Client-game revenue was RMB 78.16 billion, up 14.97%, and console-game revenue was RMB 8.362 billion, up 86.33%. Console revenue grew quickly from a much smaller base. These figures describe reported market revenue, not player satisfaction, device ownership, or the best value for an individual.
More recent figures cover only the first half of 2026, so they should not be compared directly with full-year 2025 totals. A Shanghai government report put domestic gaming sales at RMB 188.45 billion and the reported user count at 684 million for H1 2026. Mobile revenue was RMB 135.21 billion; PC revenue was RMB 45.29 billion, up 27.92% year over year.

Compare the three platforms against your needs

Choose by the games you actually want to play
Start with a shortlist of games rather than a platform’s reputation or the market-share figures. For each title, verify its official distribution route, supported device or model, account-region requirements, and any online services you need. The cited market reports do not provide a current, device-by-device availability catalog for mainland China, so they cannot establish that a given game, storefront, service, or console model is available to every reader.
If your shortlist is concentrated on one platform, that can matter more than a broad market trend. If your preferred games span platforms, weigh the extra hardware and account setup against how often you expect to use each device.

Account for what you already own and the full setup
A capable phone you already own can make mobile the lowest-friction option, but the phone is not the only possible cost: consider optional purchases or a compatible controller if you want physical controls. For PC, compare the complete device you need—not just a headline component or launch price—and factor in whether you also need a monitor, peripherals, or upgrades. Console budgeting should include the exact model, game editions, and any services or accessories relevant to your use.
There is no like-for-like total-cost comparison established by the market figures above. Prices and support vary by device, seller, and region; verify current local costs and warranty terms before buying. A China-market laptop announcement, for instance, is not evidence of a tested recommendation or of its current street price.

Match controls, screen, and portability to how you play
- Mobile: best when you want a device you already carry and are comfortable with touch input. A phone controller can add physical controls, but check the exact phone connector and compatibility. Backbone describes Backbone One as a phone controller that also supports streaming from PC or console; that product description does not confirm local availability or compatibility with every setup.
- PC: offers the choice of desk-based play with keyboard and mouse or a gamepad, laptop use, and handheld form factors. Valve describes Steam Deck OLED as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience.” This is Valve’s product description, not an independent performance assessment or confirmation of local availability and support for every China-based buyer.
- Console: suits a dedicated living-room or personal-screen setup when the specific games and services you want are supported for your model and account region.
For portable PC hardware, portability comes with device-specific performance and battery trade-offs. Do not assume that every PC game or storefront will work locally just because the device is portable.
A practical decision path
- List your must-play games. Check each publisher’s official information for supported platforms, distribution, account region, and online requirements.
- Identify what you already own. If your phone or computer meets the requirements for your shortlist, compare the cost of using it with the cost of buying a new device.
- Choose the control and screen you prefer. Decide whether touch, keyboard and mouse, a gamepad, a handheld display, or a television setup fits your usual sessions.
- Check local access and support. Confirm game and service availability, model and edition, account/store region, warranty, and hardware support with the publisher or vendor.
- Compare total cost for your actual setup. Include required accessories, games, and services rather than comparing device prices alone.
So, is PC or console worth it compared with mobile?
PC may be worth the additional hardware cost if the games, controls, or desktop-and-laptop flexibility you want justify it. Console may make sense when particular console games or a dedicated living-room setup are central to your choice and local access checks out. Mobile is a sensible default when your existing phone supports the games you want and convenience matters most. The market’s mobile lead helps explain what dominates domestic revenue; it cannot decide which setup is right for you.
