Choose a gaming PC for the shooters, resolution, graphics settings and frame rate you actually want—not for a “best gaming PC” label. For competitive play at 1080p and very high frame rates, pay close attention to the CPU as well as the graphics card; for higher resolutions or demanding visual settings, the GPU and its video memory matter more. For a new system, 16 GB of RAM and an SSD are sensible starting points, but no parts list guarantees a particular FPS. Match the PC to your monitor, check each game’s current requirements and confirm that Windows, security features and anti-cheat software are compatible before you buy.
What should you decide before comparing gaming PCs?
Write down four things first: the games you play, the resolution you want, the settings you expect to use and the frame rate you want to sustain. These choices determine whether you should put more weight on CPU performance, GPU capability, video memory or the monitor. A PC that is suitable for one competitive shooter at 1080p may not suit a visually demanding game at 1440p.
- Choose your games. Check the current requirements for each title you care about. Requirements vary, and an especially demanding game can set the practical minimum for your system.
- Choose a resolution. At 1080p, a very high frame-rate target can make CPU capability particularly important. Moving to 1440p or increasing graphics settings generally raises the work the GPU must do.
- Set a realistic frame-rate goal. Decide whether you want a steady, responsive experience or want to make use of a high-refresh monitor. A parts list alone cannot promise an exact FPS in every mode, map or update.
- Account for everything running alongside the game. Streaming, voice chat, a browser and other background tasks can make extra memory useful.
These decisions also keep minimum specifications in perspective. A game’s minimum requirements say something about whether it can run; they do not establish that it will deliver the frame rate or responsiveness you want for competitive play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat do official FPS game requirements actually tell you?
Official requirements are useful for checking basic compatibility and understanding a publisher’s stated targets. They are not interchangeable performance guarantees, and minimum specifications should not be treated as a recommendation for a new general-purpose gaming PC.

| Game | What the publisher lists | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| VALORANT | Riot lists separate 30-FPS minimum, 60-FPS recommended and 144-FPS high-end tiers. The high-end tier names an Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, and a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, Radeon R7 370 or Intel Arc A310. Riot lists 4 GB of system RAM across the tiers. | The tiers are game-specific published specifications, not a guarantee of the same FPS in every situation. The 4 GB figure is not a sensible target for a new PC that also runs Windows and background apps. Riot’s page shows a May 21, 2026 update. See Riot’s VALORANT PC specifications. |
| Counter-Strike 2 | Valve’s current Steam listing gives Windows minimums of four hardware CPU threads, 8 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card with at least 1 GB of video memory, and 85 GB of available storage. | The listing provides minimum requirements, not a recommended 144-Hz or 240-Hz build or a competitive FPS promise. The 85 GB figure was checked on the live listing in 2026; Valve does not identify it as a 2026 publication. See the Counter-Strike 2 Steam listing. |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 | Activision’s launch-era PC notice calls for an SSD with 115 GB free at launch. Its recommended tier describes 60 FPS in most situations at high settings and lists 12 GB RAM and 8 GB video memory. Its combined “Competitive / Ultra 4K” tier lists 16 GB RAM and 16 GB video memory. | That combined tier does not make 16 GB of video memory a universal requirement for competitive shooters. Activision says the launch specifications may change and updates may require more storage. See Activision’s PC specifications notice. |
These figures describe different things: Riot labels VALORANT tiers by stated frame-rate target, Valve lists CS2 minimums, and Activision gives tiers for a specific Call of Duty title. Do not compare the numbers as if they were a common benchmark. Nor should you infer an exact result for a PC just because its components look similar to one listed in a requirement. Actual performance depends on the complete configuration, settings, game version and situation.
How important are the CPU and GPU for FPS games?
Both matter, but the balance depends on the workload. For esports play at 1080p and very high frame rates, CPU capability deserves particular attention; at higher resolutions, with more demanding graphics settings or in a more visually intensive shooter, the GPU and its video memory become more important.
A gaming PC’s CPU handles game logic and other work, while the GPU renders the image. If one is a poor match for the other, the faster part may not deliver its full value in your games. This is why it is more useful to compare complete configurations and game-specific performance information than to choose a PC by CPU or GPU name alone. A “bottleneck” is not a fixed defect attached to a processor or graphics card: which component limits performance can change with resolution, settings and the game itself.
When a seller makes a claim such as “up to” a certain FPS, look for the conditions behind it: the exact game, resolution, graphics preset, system configuration and whether the figure is native or uses upscaling or frame generation. Activision documents a built-in PC benchmark for Black Ops 7, which can provide game-specific information for that title. A benchmark from one game does not establish performance in another.
Upscaling and frame generation can increase a displayed frame-rate figure, but that number alone does not show how responsive the game feels. These features may introduce latency, artifacts or inconsistent frame pacing. For competitive play, consider responsiveness and native frame delivery as well as the headline FPS number.

How much RAM should a new gaming PC have?
For a new gaming PC, 16 GB is a balanced starting point. Consider 32 GB if you plan to stream, keep substantial background workloads open or want more headroom for multitasking. Check the exact system configuration rather than relying on a product title that says only “16 GB.”
Before buying, verify whether the memory is installed as two modules, how many slots are available and which DDR generation the motherboard supports. Two compatible modules can enable dual-channel operation; the exact upgrade options depend on the PC’s board and configuration. Do not assume that any RAM kit will fit or work at its advertised specification in every system.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe official minimums illustrate why a game requirement and a buying recommendation are different: Riot lists 4 GB for VALORANT, and Valve lists 8 GB for Counter-Strike 2. Those values do not account for the needs of the operating system, other software or your preferred headroom. For a new system intended to play several modern games, 16 GB is a more useful baseline than either title’s minimum.
How much SSD storage do modern shooters need?
Choose an SSD for your primary game drive rather than an HDD-only setup. A 1 TB NVMe SSD is a practical starting capacity for a multi-game library; a 512 GB SSD can work if you keep fewer games installed and are comfortable managing space. Storage capacity affects how much you can keep installed, while fast storage chiefly helps with loading and general responsiveness—not a verified steady-state FPS increase.
Leave room for updates and other applications, not just the game’s initial download. Activision’s Black Ops 7 launch-era notice calls for 115 GB free on an SSD and warns that updates may require more space. Valve’s live Counter-Strike 2 listing shows 85 GB available space. These are title-specific figures, not promises that other games use the same amount. Check current requirements again before installing, because storage needs can change.

If you may add a drive later, confirm that the PC has an available compatible M.2 or other drive slot, and check the manufacturer’s guidance for supported drive types. A smaller included SSD is easier to expand when the system offers a suitable free slot; do not assume a slot is available from the product name alone.

What monitor should you pair with a gaming PC?
Match monitor resolution and refresh rate to the performance the PC can realistically deliver in your games. A 144-Hz-or-higher display is a useful competitive target, while 240 Hz can make sense when the PC and titles can use it. The monitor’s refresh rate is not the same as the game’s FPS: a high-refresh display cannot make a PC render frames it cannot sustain.
Compare 1080p and 1440p as a trade-off rather than assuming higher resolution is automatically better. A higher resolution can improve image detail, but it increases GPU workload; if competitive smoothness is the priority, a lower resolution paired with a higher, steadier frame rate may better fit your goal. Consider the game and your intended settings before paying for a monitor refresh rate the PC cannot take advantage of.
A responsive mouse and a suitable headset can round out a competitive setup, but they are secondary to a PC and monitor that meet your performance goals. If the budget is limited, prioritize the matched display and system configuration before adding peripheral upgrades.
Should you buy a prebuilt desktop, build a PC or choose a laptop?
A prebuilt desktop can simplify assembly and provide one system to contact for support, while a custom desktop gives you more control over component selection. A gaming laptop makes sense when portability matters enough to accept trade-offs in cooling and upgrade flexibility. Compare the specific configuration, warranty and upgrade access rather than treating form factor as a performance guarantee.

For any desktop, look beyond peak component names and lighting. Check that the system has adequate cooling and case airflow, that memory and storage are accessible for upgrades, and that the warranty clearly explains coverage and support. A powerful CPU and GPU are less useful if the design cannot keep components operating appropriately during sustained play or if an upgrade requires replacing more parts than expected.
For a laptop, verify the exact GPU and memory configuration rather than assuming that a desktop and laptop with similar component names perform identically. Also consider whether the machine will be used in a fixed location or carried regularly. The available data does not establish a universal performance ranking between desktop and laptop configurations; your portability needs and the actual system specifications should decide.
What compatibility checks matter before you pay?
Confirm the operating system, anti-cheat requirements and any platform-specific conditions for the games you intend to play. These checks can matter as much as the headline CPU and GPU, especially when a title requires security features or limits access to particular modes.
- Windows 11 security: Riot requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot for VALORANT on Windows 11. Check that the PC supports and has the required configuration; do not change BIOS settings casually.
- Mode-specific access: Activision’s current support distinguishes restrictions on certain modes or playlists when security requirements are not met. Check the rules for the particular mode you plan to play rather than assuming all access is identical.
- Intel Arc systems: Activision’s PC notice requires Resizable BAR for Intel Arc options, and Intel provides motherboard and UEFI guidance. Confirm support for the complete system, not only that the graphics card fits.
- Virtual machines and cloud gaming: Riot states, “VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines.” If that title is essential, plan for a compatible local PC rather than assuming a virtualized or cloud setup will work.
Requirements can change after launch, so recheck publisher support pages near purchase and after major game updates. This is particularly important for security rules and storage requirements, which may be updated independently of a PC’s advertised hardware.

- List the target games and settings. Record the current requirements and whether you expect to play at 1080p or 1440p.
- Set a frame-rate and monitor target. Choose a refresh rate that aligns with the performance you want, then evaluate claims for the exact game and settings.
- Balance CPU and GPU. Give the CPU close attention for high-frame-rate esports at 1080p; give the GPU and VRAM more weight as resolution and visual demands rise.
- Check the full memory configuration. Use 16 GB as a sensible new-PC baseline, consider 32 GB for streaming or heavier multitasking, and confirm module count, slots and DDR compatibility.
- Check storage capacity and expansion. Prefer an SSD, allow space for multiple games and updates, and verify whether an additional compatible drive can be installed.
- Inspect cooling, access and support. Look for airflow, upgrade access and clear warranty terms. Weigh prebuilt convenience against custom-build choice or laptop portability.
- Verify game and platform compatibility. Check Windows, anti-cheat and security requirements, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for VALORANT on Windows 11 and Resizable BAR for Intel Arc in the stated Activision context.
- Read the fine print on performance claims. Look for the named game, resolution, settings, configuration and whether the figure relies on generated frames. Treat publisher specifications and seller claims as attributed figures—not an independent test result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a gaming PC with no internet connection for these shooters?
The requirements summarized here do not establish whether a particular game supports offline play or what online services it needs. Check the individual game’s current publisher support page and account requirements before buying if offline access is essential.
Will a gaming PC keep working with a game after its anti-cheat rules change?
Not necessarily: game publishers can update security or compatibility requirements after a PC is purchased. Recheck the publisher’s support information when a game stops launching or restricts a mode, and avoid changing firmware settings unless you understand the system maker’s instructions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a gaming PC’s advertised FPS be compared directly across different stores?
Only if the claims use comparable conditions, including the same game, resolution, graphics settings and measurement approach. A result that uses frame generation is not directly equivalent to native rendered FPS, so look for those details before comparing claims.
Does a gaming laptop with the same GPU name perform like a desktop PC?
A shared GPU name alone does not establish equivalent performance between laptop and desktop systems. Compare the exact model and full configuration, and factor in the laptop’s cooling and upgrade trade-offs before deciding.
